Wed Mar 11 202017:01After losing Bryce Harper, Nats move on from Anthony Rendon
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A year after moving on from Bryce Harper, the Washington Nationals must move on from Anthony Rendon. No one accumulated more homers or RBIs for the Nationals in 2019 than Rendon. Just like no one accumulated more homers or RBIs for the Nationals in 2018 than Harper.Might not seem simple to overcome the departure of a middle-of-the-order All-Star who hit 34 homers and drove in a majors-best 126 runs while playing well at third base. That is what Rendon did last season along the way to winning a World Series title, before signing for $245 million over seven years with the Los Angeles Angels as a free agent. "It's big. Time will tell, I think, because he did a lot of things for our team, for our lineup, that maybe you can't quantify," Nationals reliever Sean Doolittle said. "Just kind of the player that he was, the teammate that he was, what his presence did. .. We're going to need new guys to step up."Still, the end result of a championship in the immediate aftermath... [More]
Sat Mar 2 201917:38Harper wants "to be on Broad Street" for World Series parade
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Bryce Harper sounded like a typical Philadelphian talking about a goal every Phillies fan will endorse."I want to be on Broad Street on a frickin' boat or bus or whatever it is and hold a (World Series) trophy over my head," the six-time All-Star said Saturday after putting on his new No. 3 jersey. The Phillies are counting on Harper to help them win only the third championship in franchise history. Philadelphia gave Harper a 13-year contract, the largest deal in baseball history at $330 million. His arrival has fans scurrying to the box office. The team said 180,000 tickets were sold in less than two days after the agreement was reported Thursday afternoon."He's a magnetic personality and he plays the game with his heart on his sleeve and Philadelphia loves that," Phillies owner John Middleton said. "They love people who leave a little skin on the grass."Harper was greeted by the Phillie Phanatic as he walked onto the first base dugout at the team's spring training... [More]
Tue Nov 6 201823:02Rizzo: Nats made offer to Bryce Harper late in season
CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — The Washington Nationals made an offer to Bryce Harper late in the season in an attempt to reach a deal before he became a free agent.Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo disclosed the talks with agent Scott Boras at the general managers' meetings on Tuesday."We've had conversations and we utilized our exclusivity to negotiate with him late in the season through when he became eligible to sign with a team," Rizzo said. "We didn't get anything done, but he's a guy that is near and dear to us and we are not closing any doors."Harper, who turned 26 last month, is expected to receive the largest contract among the 164 free agents. He is a six-time All-Star with 184 homers, 521 RBIs and a .900 OPS."He's shown the type of player he is and now he's a grizzled veteran," Rizzo said. "He has done a lot in the game already, and he is just scratching the surface."Harper was dressed in his full Nats uniform more than 3½ hours before the team's final home game in September and... Mon Feb 19 201820:31Nats star Harper focused on 2018 season, not future beyond
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Bryce Harper is focusing on his immediate future. But don't bother asking him about plans beyond this year."If you guys do talk anything about that, I'll be walking right out the door," he said Monday.Everyone around baseball knows the Washington Nationals slugger could be part of a huge free agent class after the coming season. But if teams are saving money by passing on currently available players in hopes of signing a big star next year, that doesn't sound like the best way to impress Harper."I think if I'm an organization or a team I want the best players on my team," Harper said. "My fans deserve that, the players deserve that."Harper, Manny Machado, Josh Donaldson, Charlie Blackmon and potentially Clayton Kershaw could be free agents next offseason. Some within the industry suggest this market is slow because teams have their eyes on 2019 — pitchers Jake Arrieta and Alex Cobb and third baseman Mike Moustakas are among the players looking for work with spring... Thu Feb 8 201812:11As Dave Martinez joins Nats, could Bryce Harper be out soon?
WASHINGTON (AP) — There will be one very important question hovering over Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals throughout spring training and the entire 2018 season: Will this be his last year with the club?Sure, there are plenty of other story lines to keep an eye on, from Dave Martinez's debut as a manager in the majors, to the pursuit of a third consecutive NL East title, to Max Scherzer's bid for a fourth Cy Young Award.Nothing will generate as much interest, or will have as profound an effect on the team, as what happens with Harper, who can become a free agent after the coming season. The 25-year-old Harper's representative, Scott Boras, already has been talking about his guy as an iconic player with iconic value , and it's hard to argue. Which is why, after making a little more than $13.5 million last year and a little more than $21.5 million this year, the 2012 NL Rookie of the Year, 2015 NL MVP and five-time All-Star is sparking conversation about deals worth a half-billion... LF Jayson Werth, in likely his last game with the Nationals, started and hit No. 2 in Game 5 of the NL Division Series against the Cubs. He went 2-for-4 with two walks and also lined out. However, he lost a ball in the outfield that led to a run as the Cubs won 9-8 to end the Nationals' season. Werth was on the last year of a seven-year deal, and the young depth of the Washington outfield makes him expendable.

LF Jayson Werth may have played his last game at Nationals Park on Saturday. With the series moving to Chicago for Game 3 on Monday, there is no guarantee of another game in Washington this year. Werth is the last year of a seven-year deal he signed as a free agent after he had played for the Philadelphia Phillies. Werth was 0-for-3 with a walk on Friday and then 0-for-4 on Saturday.

LF Jayson Werth took some heat when he signed a long-term deal with the Nationals as a free agent who had been with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was 0-for-3 on Friday in a 3-0 loss to the Cubs as Washington was held to two hits. Werth is now in the last year of the seven-year deal. "He has meant everything to us. He has exceeded expectations," general manager Mike Rizzo said. Werth has been part of four postseason teams with the Nationals. "We are ready. We are poised. We are calm," Werth said. "I think this is our best team." Werth (.226 in 70 games this year) started in LF on Friday while many fans and media members in D.C. wondered if OF Howie Kendrick was not a better option.

LF Jayson Werth went 1-for-4 with a double on Wednesday night in what might be his final game ever at Citizens Bank Park. The former Phillies outfielder, now 38 years old and in his 15th MLB season, has played in 328 career games at Citizens Bank Park, hitting .293 with 67 home runs and 208 RBIs there.

RF Jayson Werth hit the wall with his right shoulder pretty hard on a catch in the third inning Sunday against Dodgers CF Chris Taylor. However, he stayed in the game and ended up 0-for-3 as his average fell to .235. If OF Bryce Harper is ready for the playoffs, the Nationals would have to decide who will start in left field -- Werth or Howie Kendrick, who is hitting .321 this year with the Phillies and Nationals and can cover more ground than Werth.

RF Jayson Werth, making his sixth start in right this year, lost a ball in the twilight in Friday's second inning as the Dodgers scored five runs. "Put that one on me. You can't do a whole lot about it, but at the same time, you feel terrible for (starter Edwin Jackson)," Werth said. "He's out there busting it for us. It was unfortunate. That was pretty much the game."
