Sean Burnett was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.
That's usually a precursor for Tommy John surgery. If so, it would be the second time Burnett has undergone the surgery in his career. He made just three appearances with the Angels this season.

Angels placed LHP Sean Burnett on the 15-day disabled list with a left elbow injury.
Burnett just can't catch a break. The left-hander retired the only batter he faced Tuesday in his third appearance since returning from the DL, but he felt more soreness in his elbow in the process. The pitcher is headed back to Anaheim to be examined Wednesday. Burnett has been limited to 16 appearances over the last two seasons due to elbow issues.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Friday that Sean Burnett (elbow) is getting "progressively better" and nearing a return to the Angels bullpen.
Burnett fanned three in a scoreless inning on his minor league rehab assignment on Thursday. If all continues to go well, he'll resume his customary setup role in the Angels bullpen before the end of the month.

Sean Burnett threw 50 pitches -- 35 in the bullpen and 15 to hitters -- Wednesday as he works back from a left elbow injury.
"I felt like I could've gotten hitters out," Burnett said after the outing. The left-hander will remain in Arizona for the time being and is scheduled to throw another simulated game in two days. From there, he may not need much longer before being ready to face major league hitters.
