Thu Feb 18 201616:29Pistons acquire Thornton from Rockets
The Detroit Pistons continued their aggressive week on Thursday, reportedly acquiring shooting guard Marcus Thornton and forward Donatas Motiejunas from the Houston Rockets for backup center Joel Anthony and a protected first-round pick in 2018.Yahoo Sports was the first to report the deal. The Pistons (27-27) are one game out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference but ranked 24th in 3-point shooting percentage before team president/coach Stan Van Gundy made his second trade of the week to possibly address the issue. On Monday, the Detroit sent guard Brandon Jennings and forward Ersan Ilyasova to the Orlando Magic for forward Tobias Harris.Thornton averaged 10 points in 47 games for the Rockets and has made 33.8 percent (73-of-216) of his 3-pointers this season. In 436 games for the New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Brooklyn Nets, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns and Houston, Thornton has averaged 12.4 points per game while shooting 35.9 percent from 3-point range.Thornton signed a... Thornton tallied 17 points, five rebounds, one assist, and two steals in a preseason 123-119 loss to the Magic on Sunday.
Thornton seems to be wandering from team to team in the back-none of his career and this fit doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Not only does he do the same things as Jason Terry, he'll be deep in the rotation with all the guard depth the Rockets currently have. It's tough to see Thornton cracking a significant role with the team and his value is limited at best.
Sun Jul 12 201514:21Marcus Thornton: Signs One-Year Deal With Rockets
Thornton agreed to a one-year contract with the Rockets on Sunday, Mark Berman of Fox 26 reports.
Thornton will join the Rockets on a veteran's minimum deal. He started the 2014-15 season with the Celtics, but eventually was traded to the Suns. In a combined 48 games, Thornton finished with season averages of 7.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 0.6 steals while playing 15 minutes per game. Thornton likely won't see much of a boost in minutes by coming to the Rockets, as James Harden sits above him in the depth chart. Expect him to remain very limited in his fantasy value moving forward.

Thornton spent most of 2014-15 with the Boston Celtics, but was traded to the Phoenix Suns in February. In nine regular season games for the Suns he averaged 3.6 points, 0.2 three-pointers, 0.2 assists, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.7 steals in nine minutes per game. The shooting guard is an unrestricted free agent this summer.
After being traded from the Celtics, Thornton had a minimal role with the Suns, coming off the bench behind Brandon Knight and Gerald Green. The 28-year-old seemingly can't find an extended role for a team, playing on five different teams over the last six years, and is entering free agency this summer as well. Thornton has little fantasy utility unless he earns a larger role and more minutes for a team.

Thornton (toe) returned to action Tuesday against the Hawks after sitting out the last 10 games. He played just six minutes off the bench and put up five points and two rebounds.
Thornton was probably only given run because the Suns got smacked around by the Hawks on Tuesday. The Kings signed Thornton to a foolhardy contract several years ago that is finally expiring this season. While Thornton has the talent to contribute, he's been tossed around the league the last couple seasons, used more as a means to make contracts matchup for other players to be traded than as an actual rotation piece teams are interested in. It'll be intriguing to see where Thornton signs this season when a team doesn't have to look at him as a burden to their books due to his exorbitant contract.

Thornton (toe) continues to sit and should be considered doubtful to play Monday against the Blazers.
Thornton has missed eight games with his most recent ailment, and there's still no solid timetable on when he'll return. He's still technically a game-time decision moving forward, but his fantasy appeal is limited nonetheless -- he's averaging just 8.0 points and 1.1 three-pointers made per game this season.

Brandon Knight (ankle), who participated in Tuesday's practice, is also considered questionable. Thornton thus seems less likely than his teammate to play, but the possibility apparently cannot be ruled out. Thornton has averaged just 9.3 minutes through his first eight games with the Suns.

Thornton played 22 minutes off the bench against the Timberwolves on Wednesday. The veteran finished the game with 14 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Thornton saw a bump in minutes since Brandon Knight (ankle) was off the court with an injury. Knight appears doubtful for Friday's game against the Hawks, which means that coach Jeff Hornacek will likely use Thornton in extended minutes off the bench yet again.

He averaged 8.9 points per game in just over 16 minutes as a member of the Celtics and projects to put up similar numbers with his new team.

Thornton scored 14 points (4-10 FG, 4-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT) with three rebounds and a block in 25 minutes off the bench Wednesday.
That's four straight games with at least 14 points and three three-pointers for Thornton heading into the All-Star break, who's averaging 13.1 points, 3.5 boards, 2.6 threes and 1.1 steals over his last eight games. If you need help in threes and steals, Thornton could be worth snapping up if he doesn't cool off during the All-Star break.
