2B Danny Espinosa was designated for assignment after struggling all season at the plate. In 77 games, he hit .162 with a .276 on-base percentage, with six home rims, 29 RBI and 91 strikeouts in 228 at-bats. The Angels traded two minor leaguers to Washington in the offseason and handed him the starting job. His defense was exemplary (two errors) but the strikeouts became too much to bear. "I think Danny brought some good things that helped us, but on the offensive side the struggles were obvious," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "At that position we definitely need more offensive input. You would have to be really deep to absorb the lack of offensive production." The Angels' record when Espinosa started was 34-30, the best record for any starter, and they are 15-21 when someone else starts at second. The Angels will use a platoon of Nick Franklin (.186) and Cliff Pennington (.241) at second, and may consider Kaleb Cowart, a third baseman who has been playing more second base lately for Triple-A Salt Lake City. He's hitting .304 in the minors.

2B Danny Espinosa was out of the lineup Thursday as he remains in a massive slump that has seen him go 0-for-34 and 2-for-52. He's hitting .138 with 43 strikeouts in 109 at-bats. "We love his defense," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's mired in a downturn with a high frustration level. We're better with Danny in the lineup, but there's a time when you have the consider what you need (hitting). There's a lot going on, both mechanical and with his confidence." Espinosa is looking at the upside: "There's a lot of games left," he said.
