Wed Jan 19 201115:29Cubs acquire Burgess in Gorzelanny trade
Cubs acquired OF Michael Burgress, LHP Graham Hicks and RHP A.J. Morris from the Nationals for LHP Tom Gorzelanny.
Burgess, 22, batted .265/.357/.465 with 18 home runs, 85 RBI and an .822 OPS over 529 plate appearances between High-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg last season. The former 2007 supplemental first-round pick has good power and a strong arm in right field, but his plate discipline still needs some work. He has struck out over 100 times in each of the last three seasons. Burgess could still mature at the plate, but right now he projects as a left-handed bat off the bench in the big leagues.
Mon Jan 17 201115:19Burgess headed to Cubs in Gorzelanny deal
Micheal Burgess is among the prospects headed to the Cubs in Monday's Tom Gorzelanny trade.
The identities of the two other prospects are unknown. Burgess, 22, was a supplemental first round pick of the Nats back in 2007 and posted a .781 OPS with 18 home runs over 101 games for Single-A Potomac last season. He's a strong kid and may have a decent future if he improves his plate discipline. The trade is probably going to be finalized Tuesday afternoon.
