But, the Cubs' primary focus is just to get him through the season healthy so he can have a normal offseason and then be ready for spring training.

Angel Guzman (shoulder) will toss a live bullpen session against hitters on Wednesday.
He hasn't done so since the 2009 season after missing all of the 2010 season due to March right shoulder surgery. Guzman will toss a fourth side session on Sunday. The 29-year-old had a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 55 relief appearances in 2009 but is highly unlikely to be included on the 25-man roster when Opening Day arrives. Expect him to begin the year at Triple-A Iowa and quickly work his way back up to the Cubs.

Mon Feb 14 201121:47Guzman to throw sim game by mid-March?
Angel Guzman (shoulder) is expected to throw a simulated game by mid-March.
The Cubs are stringing Guzman along slowly in order to avoid a setback with his surgically-repaired shoulder. He probably won't see any action in spring exhibition games and is highly unlikely to be included on the 25-man roster when Opening Day arrives. Look for Guzman to begin the year at Triple-A Iowa and quickly work his way back up to the bigs. The 29-year-old had a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 55 relief appearances in 2009.

Mon Feb 14 201117:04Angel Guzman doubtful to make opening roster
The Cubs don't anticipate opening camp with Angel Guzman, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery.
Once a top setup man, Guzman missed all of the 2010 season and is just beginning to throw off a mound again. "It's a long shot," Cubs manager Mike Quade said. "He's here, he'll work, you know he'll do that, and modern medicine is unbelievable. If he gets involved in this sometime, someday, it'll be great. Right now, it's a long way off."

Sat Feb 12 201115:48Guzman throws off mound for second time
Angel Guzman threw off a mound Friday for the second time since undergoing shoulder surgery last March.
Not surprisingly, he's not throwing close to full speed yet, but he's making progress. Barring a setback, Guzman should be ready by the time Opening Day rolls around. He posted a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 55 appearances during the 2009 season and would give the Cubbies a top notch setup man assuming he's made a full recovery, which is a legitimate question given the serious nature of the procedure and his history of injuries.
