LHP CC Sabathia officially was resigned to a one-year contract, the New York Yankees announced Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed, but multiple reports had the deal listed for $10 million. Sabathia is coming off a roller-coaster season in which he suffered what might have been a career-ending knee injury in August. But the 37-year-old left-handed free agent bounced back to anchor a rotation that carried the Yankees to the seventh game of the American League Championship Series. Sabathia finished last season with a 14-5 record and a 3.69 ERA in 27 starts. He owns a 120-73 mark with a 3.75 ERA in 255 starts over nine seasons with the Yankees.

LHP CC Sabathia will start Game 2 on Friday. He has had a career resurgence this year at age 36. After going 18-26 in the previous three years, Sabathia was 14-5 with a 3.69 ERA this year. Cleveland manager Terry Francona said he is not surprised by the 36-year-old Sabathia's late-career surge. "Not at all," Francona said. "He's such a good athlete, and I don't think people give him credit for that. I know his knees hurt at times and they're a little creaky, but, no, he's a really good athlete and he can manipulate the ball. So it's not surprising at all."

LHP CC Sabathia, who triggered a slight firestorm by saying the Red Sox were "weak" for bunting him while he has a bad knee, was criticized by Red Sox analyst Jim Rice on the NESN postgame show Thursday. Rice said: "What is he talking about? Bunting is part of the game. You try to get on base anyway you can. If you tell him to leave some of that chicken, that donut and that burger weight -- maybe his leg will be OK that he can field that baseball. That's just stupid." Sabathia was charged with a throwing error when former teammate Eduardo Nunez bunted on him. Asked about Rice's comments before Friday's game, Sabathia said: "I don't give a (expletive) about their reaction. I don't care what they have to say. I'm out there early every day. If they've got something to say, we can meet in center field." As for manager Joe Girardi's take, he likened it to an "old-school mentality" from the likes of Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens.
