FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Ryan Dempster will not pitch in 2014 due to "physical reasons and his desire to spend more time with his kids."
"I don't feel like I am capable of performing to the ability and standard that I am accustomed to," Dempster said. "I feel it's in the best interest of both the club but most importantly myself to step away from playing baseball at this time. The time is right. I'm not saying retirement but I definitely won't be playing this season." The Red Sox will place Dempster on the restricted list, which means they won't have to pay him his $13.25 million salary in 2014. Sun Sep 8 201311:30Dempster or Doubront to lose rotation spot
Ryan Dempster or Felix Doubront will be removed from the rotation following Clay Buchholz's (shoulder) return.
The speculation to this point is that Dempster is probably the most vulnerable, as he has the worst numbers and also has plenty of relief experience. Buchholz is rejoining the rotation on Tuesday.

MLB has suspended Ryan Dempster for five games and fined him an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing at Alex Rodriguez on Sunday.
No word yet on whether he'll appeal. It's worth noting that the Red Sox have upcoming off-days on Thursday and Monday, so they should be able to get by just fine if he begins serving the suspension immediately. In the end, it's not much of a punishment. Yankees manager Joe Girardi was also fined an undisclosed amount for his actions during Sunday's game.

Ryan Dempster allowed five runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Astros on Wednesday.
Dempster was actually able to do some good things on Wednesday, as he struck out seven batters while not issuing a walk. Still, five runs against a bad Astros offense can hardly be considered a success. He didn't factor in the decision, remaining at 6-8 with a 4.67 ERA this season. Thu Aug 1 201323:11Ryan Dempster gives up seven runs
Ryan Dempster was tagged for seven runs in six innings by the Mariners on Thursday.
An erratic strike zone from David Rackley played a role in Dempster's struggles; he didn't deserve all five walks he issued. That's not to say he was any good, though. Even his better outings lately have been pretty mediocre; it's been a month and a half since he completed seven innings and three months since he escaped an outing allowing one or no runs. He's currently 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA.
