G Norris Cole is day-to-day while dealing with a lower back injury, the Pelicans announced Tuesday. Cole has played in 45 games (23 starts) and is averaging 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists. It was been a rough year for the New Orleans Pelicans and the team received more bad news on Tuesday.The Pelicans announced that guard Jrue Holiday and forward Alonzo Gee will miss the remainder of the season, forward Ryan Anderson has a sports hernia that will require additional evaluation and guard Norris Cole is day to day while dealing with a lower back injury.Holiday fractured the right interior orbital wall of his right eye with 56.1 seconds left in Monday night's game against the New York Knicks. He finishes the season with averages of 16.8 points, 6.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 65 games, including 23 starts.Gee ruptured his right quadriceps during the second quarter in the same game against the Knicks. His season ends with averages of 4.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.9 steals in 73 games, including 38 starts.Anderson is going to Philadelphia to see a specialist later this week for a second opinion on his injury. G Norris Cole has been inserted into the starting lineup with G Eric Gordon sidelined and is averaging 14.2 points and 5.8 assists while shooting 52.9 percent from 3-point range.

This is rough news for Cole who was likely to enter the year playing a bigger role while Jrue Holiday's on a strict minute restriction. The sooner he can heal and get back on the court the better. The Pelicans may look to add another guard, as he was the main backup behind Tyreke Evans and Holiday.

Cole is out indefinitely after suffering a high ankle sprain in Sunday's practice.

Cole averaged 9.9 points, 3.2 assists, and 24.4 minutes during his 28 games as a Pelican last year. He was likely to have a similar role this season playing off the bench behind Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans. Holiday is expected to be on a strict minutes leash early on, so the quicker Cole can recover the bigger the role he'll be able to step into.

Cole has signed a one-year qualifying offer with the Pelicans, Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports reports.

Cole is on track to make $3.03 million this coming year but will be an unrestricted free agent following the completion of the 2015-16 campaign. He's in store for reserve minutes off the bench yet again this season behind Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans, which makes him a borderline pick in standard leagues.

Cole is a restricted free agent after being extended a qualifying offer by the team, the NBA.com reports.

As the backup point guard last year, Cole performed well down the stretch, and the team clearly sees a future for him in the rotation. Should he accept his $3 million qualifying offer, then Cole will once again provide a spark off the bench for the Pelicans. The 26-year-old guard should be a key contributor for a team that snuck into the playoffs last season, and hopes to return again in 2015-16.

Cole was traded from the Heat to the Pelicans at the February trade deadline and filled in nicely as the team's backup point guard for 28 games. He finished his run with New Orleans with averages of 9.9 points and 3.2 assists over 24 minutes per game.

Cole started the season in Miami, continuing to serve as a back-up point guard to Mario Chalmers for majority of his tenure. The trade to New Orleans occurred after the Pelicans knew they would be without starting point guard Jrue Holiday for most of the final stretch of the season, and Cole served as a very solid backup with both scoring and passing behind interim starter Tyreke Evans. He was called upon to provide more scoring off the bench than he needed to in Miami, and for the most part, he did not disappoint. Cole is quick driving to the lane and a solid finisher given his size, but he still could improve on the consistency of his jump shot. Nevertheless, Cole will enter the offseason as a free agent, and while it is assumed that the Pelicans would be more than happy to have him back given the injury concerns of Holiday, he should have absolutely no problem finding a long-term deal if New Orleans decides to go in another direction.

Cole scored eight points (3-10 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT) with three rebounds, six assists and one block in 34 minutes off the bench Saturday, in the Pelicans' loss to the Warriors in Game 1 of their playoff matchup.

With Tyreke Evans (knee) lasting just 12 minutes and Jrue Holiday not back to full health from his leg issue, Cole assumed a larger role in the loss to the Warriors. If he is forced to take on a similar role throughout the series, the Pelicans could be in danger of a quick exit, as Cole averaged just 11.3 points and 5.0 assists per 36 minutes throughout the season, including stints as a starter in Miami.
