Thu Jan 24 201914:18Fast-playing Kings try to run all the way to the postseason
NEW YORK (AP) — Dave Joerger sized up Sacramento's situation in the summer and decided there was a need for speed.Never mind that his past doesn't scream run and gun. He was one of the coaches who oversaw the grit-and-grind era in Memphis, and disagrees that everyone needs to play fast even in this era of exploding offenses in the NBA.But you don't put the ball in De'Aaron Fox 's hands and tell him to walk it up the floor. So these Kings would have to push the pace."It's what best fits us," Joerger said. "About two weeks before the season started, I'd worked on it all summer trying to figure out how can I develop all these guys at the same time, the young guys, and made the priority list, and the list for me was De'Aaron Fox. And I think he can be great. And how do we best use his skills, and that is to play fast and to play open."Maybe the Kings will keep right on running until they've ended the longest current playoff drought in the NBA.They are at least in the race, sitting two games... SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Kings guard Iman Shumpert was stopped from going into Portland's locker room by arena and Trail Blazers security after Sacramento's 115-107 victory Monday night.Shumpert apparently was angry at Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic, who set a hard screen in the second half."Some stuff needed to be between me and him, a conversation between two men," Shumpert said. "Some stuff happened out there that we needed to have a conversation about. That's it."Nurkic shrugged it off."I'm not going to worry about it," he said. "He's going into retirement soon. I'm not going to worry about a guy who's going into retirement soon."The 28-year-old Shumpert was called for a technical foul in the third quarter. He later was walked to the bench by a teammate after arguing with someone on Portland's bench. After the game, Shumpert tweeted : "I apologize to the fans if I made a scene. Wasn't my intention but this 2019 stuff is all about a 'story.' Don't let that distract you from this young Scores ball club getting a great victory against a tested Blazers team."___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

CLEVELAND (AP) — Once summer rolls around, LeBron James stars on a different stage. All eyes in the NBA and across the sports world will focus on James during free agency. There are already teams lining up for an audience with The King, should he opt out of his contract. On Thursday, the Cavaliers turned their roster upside down in hopes of convincing James he doesn't have to go anywhere. And just like that, another chapter was added to a chaotic season in Cleveland. With an unexpected flurry of moves before the NBA trade deadline, the Cavs unloaded six players to change their identity and culture while moving back into title contention. They also showed James, who can be a free agent in July, they're willing to do whatever's necessary to help him win another championship."He's the guy that is going to take us back to the promised land," Cavs general manager Koby Altman said, "so you want to put the right pieces around him."All it took was a massive makeover.Altman ended an experiment doomed... From Isaiah Thomas to Dwyane Wade and Derrick Rose, the Cleveland Cavaliers loaded up on big names last summer.None will be there if the Cavaliers get back to the NBA Finals. In what felt like an unprecedented do-over for a contending team, the Cavaliers simply changed the pieces that weren't fitting for new ones on Thursday at the trade deadline.Fans who usually marvel at LeBron James were instead praising his general manager, as Koby Altman used a series of swaps to strengthen a sputtering team and leave open the possibility for more moves."They got better. They made the moves they wanted to make and I'm sure they're going to make it work over there," Golden State's Kevin Durant said. "It's fun for all the fans and the media to kind of see what's going on with the trade deadline."Cavs' fans probably had the most fun, and for good reason.
