Thu Dec 30 202120:09Isaiah Thomas Placed In COVID-19 Protocols
Dallas Mavericks guard Isaiah Thomas has entered the league's health and safety protocols. This happens one day after Thomas signed a 10-day deal with the organization. He scored six points with four assists in 13 minutes during his Mavericks debut on Wednesday. He'll now join a long list of Mavericks players in protocols. Honestly, it's uncertain if they will have enough players to even play Friday's game against the Sacramento Kings. Jalen Brunson, Josh Green, and Frank Ntilikina would all see heavy minutes, assuming they do play. Brunson is by far the best fantasy option out of the three, but all of them have value for the shorthanded Mavericks.

Sat Dec 5 202015:36'Happy about where I'm at': Westbrook discusses move to DC
Russell Westbrook made a few things clear Saturday. He will remain a Dallas Cowboys fan even though he’s now playing in Washington, he’s not going to abandon his policy against being friendly with opponents during games, and he doesn’t think a championship necessarily completes a player’s resume. There’s also one issue that he declined to clear up: Whether he forced his way out of Houston or not. “Obviously, I’m not the easiest guy to understand,” Westbrook said. The Wizards clearly don’t mind. Westbrook was at practice on Saturday with the Wizards, the team that sent former No. 1 overall pick John Wall to Houston earlier in the week to acquire the nine-time All-Star who’ll now reunite with Washington coach Scott Brooks — his former Oklahoma City coach. Washington becomes Westbrook’s third team in a year and a half: He was traded by Oklahoma City to Houston after the 2018-19 season, spent just the one year with the Rockets, and now joins the Wizards to play alongside Bradley Beal in what... Thu Feb 6 202020:46Hectic end to the NBA's trade window, but some teams sat out
MIAMI (AP) — Most of the top NBA playoff contenders stayed out of the down-to-the-wire frenzy at the trade deadline.Miami and the Los Angeles Clippers beefed up instead. And a slew of other teams — including the Golden State Warriors — made moves with short-term finances and long-term ramifications in mind. The NBA’s 3 p.m. EST deadline Thursday for trades to be consummated did not arrive quietly, with a flurry of deals getting struck in the final hour and at least one other notable move falling apart before reaching the finish line. Deals that included at least 41 players and 15 future draft picks were struck on either Wednesday or Thursday — the biggest move likely being the one Thursday that saw Andrew Wiggins going from Minnesota to the Warriors so D’Angelo Russell could leave Golden State finally be paired with his good friend Karl-Anthony Towns with the Timberwolves. Here's how busy the Timberwolves were at trade-deadline time: They announced the jersey numbers of eight new players Thursday... Tue Nov 5 201902:31Now with Wizards, ex-Celtics star Isaiah Thomas starts again
WASHINGTON (AP) — Discussing his first NBA start in more than 1½ years, Isaiah Thomas tried to play it cool at first — his face straight, his voice barely above a whisper, his words betraying no emotion or real significance whatsoever."Whether I start or come off the bench, I know who I am. I know I'm one of the best basketball players in the world," he said. "So, I mean, that doesn't affect me. I approach the game the same way."And that's when he paused. A smile spread."But, I mean," Thomas continued, "I am happy to be starting."The 5-foot-9 point guard was on the floor at the outset of the Washington Wizards' 115-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Monday night, and he finished with nine points, six assists and two rebounds in just under 25 minutes.None of those individual numbers really mattered all that much. What was important was what being a member of his team's first five symbolized: Thomas had worked his way back from a series of injuries, most noteworthy a serious hip problem... Mon Sep 30 201917:34Without Wall, Beal insists most pressure comes from within
WASHINGTON (AP) — Entering the preseason with backcourt mate John Wall sidelined due to injury, Bradley Beal insists most of the pressure to be the Washington Wizards' leader is coming from within."It's no problem," Beal said Monday at the team's media day. "I think I would probably say I force myself into that role versus maybe a coach or the team. It's definitely going to be harder. But John's still going to be around. He'll still have a voice. I'll have a voice."Beal already has spent much of the past two seasons without Wall while Wall dealt with numerous injuries. The most recent and serious was a ruptured Achilles, with recovery expected to keep the point guard out until at least February.Although the Wizards — who were hit with other injuries as well — fell short of the postseason last year, Beal thrived, averaging 25.6 points, 5.5 assists and 5 rebounds while playing all 82 games.Coach Scott Brooks believes the two-time All-Star is capable of even more as a distributor."I think... Thu Sep 26 201916:42New Wizards GM Sheppard eyes 'development,' not win total
WASHINGTON (AP) — For years, the Washington Wizards would head into a season with proclamations from players or management or ownership — if not all three — about how many wins they were hoping for or how deep a playoff run they thought possible.New general manager Tommy Sheppard outlined a different sort of definition of success Thursday, saying 2019-20 is "all about player development."After all, the club is coming off a 32-50 record, has a mostly reworked roster and will be without injured All-Star point guard John Wall for the foreseeable future. Sheppard took over the GM job on an interim basis when Ernie Grunfeld was fired late last season. After running free agency and the draft, Sheppard was given the permanent post in July. His task is to rebuild, although his word of choice is "revitalize."Sheppard said watching and measuring players, and helping them improve, over the course of the season is his chief aim for now."And it's not just by a stat sheet. It's all the things that you're... [More]

BOSTON (AP) — Enes Kanter took a playful swipe at him.Kemba Walker will try to replace him.Kyrie Irving is no longer with the Celtics, but his brief flameout in Boston is still on the minds of fans in the city and even, apparently, players who have yet to play a minute for the team.On the day that the Celtics introduced Walker as their point guard of the future, Kanter said he chose the No. 11 last worn in Boston by Irving in part because it was his number in Oklahoma City in 2016-17. But he also quoted a commercial in which Irving aspired to have the number retired in his honor."I want to be the reason no one else wears it," Kanter said, cracking up himself and the media at the introductory news conference he shared with Walker. "I had to say it."Irving was the Celtics' big free agency splash two summers ago, when he asked the Cleveland Cavaliers to trade him and they shipped him to Boston for the immensely popular Isaiah Thomas. Mon Jul 1 201923:00Analysis: Point guards are getting valued, and rightly so
Point guards got paid.Much like the quarterback in football, the point guard is still a critical component in basketball, the on-court leader of a club in most cases — and in the opening two days of free agency, teams paid accordingly for that spot.Free agency wasn't even 24 hours old and more than $1 billion had been committed to point guards, led by the $196 million extension that Damian Lillard will be signing with Portland, the reported $170 million extension for Jamal Murray in Denver and the $141 million deals for Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker. There's never been an offseason in NBA history where point guards have gotten that much, and there's still plenty more left to be signed."I'm a leader in my own way," Walker wrote in an essay directed to his old fans in Charlotte and soon-to-be-new fans in Boston that was published by The Players Tribune. "I'm never going to shout anyone off the court, or get overly negative. It's not my style. But what I do is I take pride in making my teammates... [More]

Mon Apr 1 201903:22Raptors, Celtics prepare for new chance in post-LeBron East
NEW YORK (AP) — For the last two years, they were the final two steps in what had become LeBron James' annual climb to the NBA Finals. Now that he's gone, maybe the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics are done being stepping stones. They are among the teams capable of winning the Eastern Conference, which no longer has its longtime ruler and has plenty of candidates ready to replace him."Top of the East is awfully good," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. "It's a different East than it was the last couple of years, that's one thing, and so I would say that we'll see. We'll see how it all plays out."It played out the same way the last two years. The Raptors went out weakly in the second round, swept by James' Cleveland Cavaliers, before a banged-up Boston team put up as good a fight as it could in the conference finals before falling. The Raptors made wholesale changes even after winning 59 games last season, firing Coach of the Year Dwane Casey and promoting Nick Nurse, and trading DeMar DeRozan... Thu Feb 21 201915:30Thomas ready for any role as Nuggets make playoff push
DENVER (AP) — Only one game back on the court and Isaiah Thomas already began lobbying for an even broader role — to appear in the movie "Space Jam 2" starring LeBron James. With filming set to start this summer , the Denver Nuggets point guard wants to be cast as the Muggsy Bogues character from the original picture featuring Michael Jordan. But first, another script to act out: Helping the Nuggets produce a playoff run. With his surgically repaired hip finally healthy after 11 months, it's lights, cameras, and a return to action for Thomas . He sees his part as anything necessary to boost a Nuggets team that's currently No. 2 in the Western Conference thanks to the best start (39-18) in the franchise's NBA history."If you're trying to win, you're going to put your ego aside and your individual things aside and do what's best for this team," said Thomas , whose team returns from the All-Star break Friday in Dallas. "But I can help a lot."There was a glimpse of that when Thomas made his Nuggets... [More]
