Sat Dec 31 202211:25Marwin Gonzalez Heading To Japan On One-Year Deal
Veteran utility player Marwin Gonzalez signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan on Friday. The 33-year-old hit just .185/.255/.321 in 86 games for the New York Yankees last season with a .576 OPS, six home runs, 18 RBI, 20 runs scored and three stolen bases in 207 plate appearances. The switch-hitter appeared at every defensive position except catcher and center field, and he even made appearances as a pitcher, designated hitter, pinch-hitter and pinch-runner. He hasn't quite been the same since he hit .303 with a career-high 23 home runs and 90 RBI for the World Series champion Houston Astros in 2017. Gonzalez has a .252 career average with a .709 OPS in 11 big-league seasons, and he'll try to repair his value for one year in Japan.

Tue Aug 30 202211:04Marwin Gonzalez Placed On Paternity List
The New York Yankees placed infielder/outfielder Marwin Gonzalez on the paternity list on Monday and recalled outfielder Tim Locastro from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. Gonzalez will be away from the team for a few days. The 33-year-old veteran switch-hitter has been a super-utility guy for the Yankees in 2022 but is hitting just .200/.271/.323 with three homers, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and two stolen bases in 130 at-bats. This will be Locastro's fifth stint in New York this year. In 26 games, he has seven stolen bases and 10 runs scored. The 30-year-old is also slashing a meager .176/.243/.353 with two long balls and four RBI in 34 at-bats.

Free-agent infielder/outfielder Marwin Gonzalez agreed to a minor league deal with the New York Yankees on Sunday, according to a source. Gonzalez will report to big-league camp when the deal becomes official. The 33-year-old switch-hitter was with the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros last year, combining to hit just .199/.275/.304 with five home runs, 28 RBI and 30 runs scored in 307 plate appearances over 91 games. He's played for the Astros in eight of his 10 major league seasons and is a career .256 hitter with 101 homers and 397 RBI in 1,053 games. Gonzalez can play almost any position on the diamond and will bring that versatility to the Bronx as a super-utility player off the bench.

Tue Oct 26 202119:46Marwin Gonzalez Included On World Series Roster
Houston Astros infielder/outfielder Marwin Gonzalez was added to the World Series roster after being left off both the ALDS and ALCS rosters. He started the year with the Boston Red Sox before they designated him for assignment on August 13. He then signed with Houston after spending seven seasons with the club from 2012-2018. He struggled at the plate this season, slashing .199/.275/.304 with five home runs across 91 games. He was better against left-handers, though, posting a much higher .713 OPS. Don't expect Gonzalez to see much playing time, but he should get some pinch-hitting opportunities while playing in Atlanta.

Thu Oct 7 202117:02Marwin Gonzalez Left Off Houston's ALDS Roster
Houston Astros infielder Marwin Gonzalez was left off the team's 26-man roster for the American League Division Series. The veteran started the season with the Boston Red Sox but joined the Astros in late August after being released by Boston. The Astros will have five infielders on the roster for the series against the Chicago White Sox, Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Yuli Gurriel, and Aledmys Diaz.

Gonzalez went 2-for-5 Monday with one home run, two runs scored and five runs batted in. The versatile role player now has three home runs over his last six starts despite hitting only .190 in the month of September. Tue Sep 14 202114:44Marwin Gonzalez 1-For-7 Since Return
Houston Astros infielder/outfielder Marwin Gonzalez is 1-for-7 since returning to the Astros big league club. After being released by Boston, Gonzalez returned to the team that he enjoyed the most success with and was called up from Triple-A on September 6. Gonzalez popped a two-run home run on September 8 but will be used sparingly down the stretch. The 32-year-old is not a fantasy option and will be a spark off the bench, at best, down the stretch.

Sun Sep 5 202116:21Marwin Gonzalez Rejoins Astros
Houston Astros utility man Marwin Gonzalez has been recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday. The 32-year-old signed a minor league deal with the organization in late August. Before joining Houston, Gonzalez was hitting .202./282/.285 with the Boston Red Sox this season. He'll provide depth off the bench for Houston, but can be ignored in fantasy formats. Right-hander Josh James has been optioned to the minors in a corresponding move.

Mon Aug 16 202120:31Marwin Gonzalez Released By Red Sox
Boston Red Sox utility player Marwin Gonzalez was released by the Red Sox on Monday, according to Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe. Gonzalez really hasn't done much in terms of fantasy value this season, slashing .202/.281/.285 with two homers, three steals, 20 RBI and 25 runs scored over 77 games. If he wasn't already on the waiver wire, he can safely be dropped now.

Fri Aug 13 202118:22Marwin Gonzalez Designated For Assignment
Boston Red Sox utility player Marwin Gonzalez was designated for assignment on Friday ahead of the team's three-game homestand against the Baltimore Orioles. The move corresponds with the Red Sox activating trade deadline acquisition Kyle Schwarber from the injured list. Gonzalez missed a chunk of time after the All-Star break with a hamstring injury. The 32-year-old switch-hitter was defensively sound for Boston when healthy but didn't bring much to the fantasy table on the offensive side of things, hitting just .202/.281/.285 with two home runs, 20 RBI, three stolen bases, and 25 runs scored on 49 hits this season.

Sun Mar 7 202117:36Cora's COVID message: Stay safe, your team needs you
Red Sox manager Alex Cora isn’t your usual Florida tourist. “It’s an off-day here tomorrow. Hopefully it rains and it’s cold,” he said on Sunday as he prepared for the team to take its first full break of spring training. It’s not that Cora doesn’t like sunshine. He would just prefer that his players stay home with their families and not risk any potential COVID-19 exposure. With bad weather, he said, “There’s no temptation of going to the beach or going to an outdoor restaurant or whatever. So I’ll be praying for that.” The actual forecast for Fort Myers, where Boston trains: mostly sunny, high in the low 70s, almost zero chance of rain. What started in the early days of the pandemic as a health concern has also become a competitive issue for baseball teams, who have been reminded over the past year that a player on the COVID-19 list can't help them win games. “You protect yourself for the right reason, to protect your family. That’s No. 1,” Cora said. “But now we’re getting to the baseball... [More]
Sat Mar 6 202100:35Ohtani fans 5 in return to mound; Harper HR on 1st swing
Shohei Ohtani figured he’d be careful in his return to the mound after two injury-spoiled seasons. A few batters in, the Los Angeles Angels’ two-way sensation reached back for a little extra — and brought back some of the buzz that surrounded his major league debut three years ago. Ohtani reached 100 mph with his fastball and showed off his signature splitter while striking out five over 1 2/3 innings in the Angels’ 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Friday. The right-hander allowed a run, three hits and two walks, struggling to command his slider but showcasing the arm strength and stuff that allowed him to dominate in the majors before Tommy John surgery in 2018. “Since this was my first game, I wasn’t planning on letting it go in the beginning, especially early in counts,” Ohtani said via translator. “As the game went on, I felt better and I started throwing harder, but I think that led to me cutting the ball a couple times, so it’s something I have to work on.” The 26-year-old Japanese...
