Matt Maloney (shoulder) will undergo Tommy John surgery Tuesday.
His season is obviously over, and he'll struggle to make it back to full health before the All-Star break next year. Maloney made nine appearances (11 innings) with the Twins before being designated for assignment. The 28-year-old right-hander will continue to serve as organizational depth when healthy.

Wed Mar 21 201216:16Matt Maloney up to 9 1/3 scoreless innings
Matt Maloney struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief Wednesday against the Tigers.
Having thrown 9 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out 13 batters, Maloney has made a strong bid for a spot in Minnesota's bullpen. Keep an eye on him; he's not nearly this much of a strikeout pitcher, but his major weakness -- a tendency to give up long flies -- won't hurt him nearly as much in Target Field as it used to in Cincinnati.

Mon Oct 31 201116:59Twins claim LHP Matt Maloney off waivers
Twins claimed LHP Matt Maloney off waivers from the Reds.
This confirms what Maloney tweeted earlier in the day Monday. The 27-year-old left-hander posted a 2.99 ERA in 81 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season, but has a 5.40 career ERA in 80 major league innings and isn't exactly a swing-and-miss type. He'll try to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster during spring training.

Sun Sep 18 201116:26Matt Maloney shredded in spot start
Making a spot start in place of the injured Dontrelle Willis, Matt Maloney was blasted for seven runs -- six earned -- on nine hits over just 1 2/3 innings in Sunday's loss to the Brewers.
Maloney had been slated to start Monday, so he shouldn't have been totally unprepared. He was certainly totally worthless, though. The left-hander served up a pair of homers in the first inning and also gave up two doubles before getting yanked. We'll have to see if this showing changes Reds manager Dusty Baker's mind about Maloney replacing Johnny Cueto in the rotation or if he'll give someone like Travis Wood a shot.

Fri Sep 16 201116:06Maloney to start Monday against Astros
Matt Maloney will replace the injured Johnny Cueto (strained lat) in the starting rotation next Monday against the Astros.
Maloney, one of the Reds' September call-ups, allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over two innings in a relief appearance against the Rockies on Saturday. The 27-year-old southpaw pitched well in the minors this season, but he doesn't come recommended in fantasy leagues, even with the favorable matchup.

Sun Feb 27 201117:59Reds' Maloney perfect for two in victory
Matt Maloney went six up, six down in his start Sunday as the Reds beat the Indians 7-6.
Maloney would be a legitimate rotation candidate on a lot of teams, but he's simply battling for a bullpen spot in Cincinnati. Facing nothing but regulars, he struck out two while making quick work of his two innings today.
