Sat Sep 16 202312:37Johnny Cueto Doesn't Last Long Against Braves
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto wasn't very effective in a no-decision on Friday night in an eventual 9-6 win over the visiting Atlanta Braves. Cueto allowed three earned runs on seven hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out two in only four innings of work. The veteran 37-year-old Dominican hurler has only appeared in 10 games (nine starts) for the Fish in 2023 and hasn't been very good. And since he returned from the injured list on Sept. 2, he's given up 11 earned runs on 17 hits (four homers) while walking five and striking out only nine in 12 2/3 innings over three starts. Cueto has a 6.20 season ERA and 1.29 WHIP and has very little fantasy upside at this point in his career.

Sat Sep 2 202313:30Johnny Cueto To Start On Saturday Against Washington
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (illness) is expected to start on Saturday against the Washington Nationals. Cueto was placed on the 15-day injured list back on August 21 with a viral infection, and although he hasn't been officially activated yet, beat writer Jordan McPherson stated that the veteran hurler is starting on Saturday. It's been a poor season so far for the 37-year-old as he owns a lackluster 5.57 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 26:9 K/BB ratio over 32 1/3 innings (seven games, six appearances). His low WHIP and inflated ERA suggest he's had some bad luck so far but fantasy managers should avoid streaming him for this one. Miami is in the thick of the heated NL Wild Card race so any positive signs from Cueto would be big down the stretch.

Tue Aug 15 202314:18Johnny Cueto Toeing The Rubber Tuesday
Miami Marlins pitcher Johnny Cueto is getting the ball Tuesday night for a home matchup versus the Houston Astros. The veteran hurler has made six appearances for the Marlins in 2023, five of which have been starts. Cueto enters Tuesday's contest sporting an elevated 5.33 ERA, although his 4.53 SIERA and solid 15.2% K-BB% suggest he's been somewhat better than his surface ERA would suggest. The long ball has been his biggest nemesis to this point as the right-hander has surrendered seven home runs in just 27 innings on the season, good for a 2.33 HR/9 clip. He will take on an Astros offense that has taken a step back this season, sitting in a share of 16th with a .314 wOBA versus right-handed pitching.

Fri Jul 21 202318:40Johnny Cueto To Start On Saturday
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Johnny Cueto will make his return to the starting rotation for Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies. The 37-year-old only made one start before going down in April due to a biceps issue. He recently returned from the injured list, but the Marlins put him in the bullpen. He fired three scoreless innings versus the Baltimore Orioles last Sunday. It appears the Marlins have seen enough to give him the green light to return to the starting rotation. Cueto won't be a recommended streaming option for Saturday's slate.

Mon Jul 10 202320:28Johnny Cueto Comes Off The Injured List
The Miami Marlins reinstated right-hander Johnny Cueto (biceps) from the 60-day injured list on Monday. In corresponding moves, the Marlins optioned right-hander Sean Reynolds to Triple-A Jacksonville and moved outfielder Jonathan Davis (knee) to the 60-day injured list. The 37-year-old veteran hurler is off the fantasy radar for now, as the Fish plan to use him out of the bullpen to start the second half of the season. He surrendered four earned runs in just an inning pitched in his lone start of the year on April 3 against the Minnesota Twins, and he posted a rough 10.24 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in seven minor-league rehab starts with Jacksonville and Double-A Pensacola. Cueto hasn't been nearly good enough to earn a rotation spot in Miami in 2023.

Fri Jul 7 202316:04Johnny Cueto To Rejoin Fish After All-Star Break
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto (biceps) will return from the 60-day injured list after the All-Star break next week, with his time up on his minor-league rehab assignment. His role has yet to be determined, but he could take the rotation spot of rookie Eury Perez, who is being sent to the minors on Friday. Fantasy managers shouldn't really have much interest in the aging Cueto, who didn't look good on his rehab assignment after allowing four runs on three hits in one inning in his only start in the big leagues this year. The 37-year-old is scheduled to make his final rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday.

Tue Jun 20 202312:35Johnny Cueto To Make Third Rehab Start Thursday
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto (ankle, biceps) will make his third minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday, and he's scheduled to throw five innings or 75 pitches. Cueto allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in a rehab outing for Double-A Pensacola on June 16, retiring 10 of the final 13 batters he faced after giving up a first-inning grand slam. He had been dealing with a biceps issue on and off since spring training before he left his Marlins debut on April 3. Then he sprained his left ankle during a rehab start for Jacksonville on May 6. The Marlins could use the 37-year-old veteran after placing Edward Cabrera (shoulder) on the IL recently, but at this point in his career, Cueto probably doesn't have a lot to offer fantasy managers.

Tue Jun 6 202312:18Johnny Cueto To Throw Live Batting Practice Tuesday
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto (ankle, biceps), who sprained his left ankle during a minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on May 6, is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Tuesday. Cueto also threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on May 30, his first time throwing off a mound since spraining his ankle. The veteran hurler had been dealing with a biceps issue on and off since spring training and was pulled after 30 pitches in his team debut on April 3. An MRI revealed no structural damage. The 37-year-old could be close to starting another rehab assignment, but he's at least a few weeks away from a return and should be left to the waiver wire in mixed leagues for now.

Sun May 7 202300:43Johnny Cueto Exits Rehab Start On Saturday
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (biceps) exited his rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday. The 37-year-old took a spill while attempting to make a play at first base in the third inning, resulting in a lower-body injury. Fortunately, he left the field on his own. Cueto has appeared in only one game for the Marlins in 2023. However, he became bothered by lingering biceps tightness in that one and has been on the shelf ever since. Hopefully, Saturday's departure was precautionary and won't cause him any setbacks.

Tue Apr 25 202300:22Johnny Cueto To Pitch In Extended Game Wednesday
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (biceps) is scheduled to throw three innings in an extended game on Wednesday. The 37-year-old veteran has been dealing with right biceps tightness since Spring Training and exited his Marlins debut on April 3. Cueto was a surprise fantasy asset last season with the White Sox, so it is possible that he could carry some streaming appeal when he returns. However, the days of Cueto providing decent strikeout numbers and low WHIPs are likely gone, which limit his fantasy value.

Tue Apr 4 202315:04Marlins Put Johnny Cueto, Joey Wendle On Injured List
The Miami Marlins placed starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (biceps) on the 15-day injured list and infielder Joey Wendle (intercostal) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. Cueto is dealing with right biceps tightness after leaving his start early on Monday, while Wendle is sidelined with a right intercostal strain. Pitchers Braxton Garrett and Daniel Castano, second baseman Garrett Hampson have been recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville, while pitcher Jeff Lindgren was designated for assignment. With the 37-year-old Cueto on the shelf, Garrett could slide into his place in Miami's starting rotation. Wendle could miss the rest of April, depending on how he recovers. In the meantime, Jon Berti should see most of the time at the 6.

Mon Apr 3 202321:37Johnny Cueto Leaves Monday Start With Biceps Tightness
Miami Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto left Monday's start against the Minnesota Twins because of tightness in his right biceps. Cueto struggled in the start before the injury, coughing up four runs on three hits, including two homers, while notching just three outs. There's no word yet on the extent of Cueto's injury but a trip to the injured list is certainly a possibility for the veteran.

Tue Jan 10 202314:26Johnny Cueto Agrees To Deal With Marlins
According to a tweet from the Miami Herald's Craig Mish on Tuesday, free-agent starter Johnny Cueto reportedly is in agreement with the Miami Marlins. Cueto is guaranteed $8.5 million in the agreement, per sources -- $6 million in 2023 with a $10.5 million club option in 2024 ($2.5 million buyout). Cueto made 25 appearances for the Chicago White Sox last year, 24 of which were starts. He turned in a 3.35 ERA and a 3.79 FIP in 158 1/3 innings of work while striking out 102 batters and surrendering just 33 walks. The veteran starter will join a Marlins rotation mix that also includes Sandy Alcantara, Pablo Lopez, Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers, Edward Cabrera, and Braxton Garrett.

Fri Dec 23 202213:28Padres, Marlins Interested In Johnny Cueto
The San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins are among the teams looking at free-agent starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, who pitched very well for the Chicago White Sox in 2022. Cueto went 8-10 with a 3.35 ERA (3.79 FIP), a 1.22 WHIP and a career-low 15.7 percent strikeout rate in 25 appearances (24 starts) over 158 1/3 innings pitched, and he's now attracting interest as a veteran arm for the back end of a rotation. He's heading into his age-37 season and doesn't have much fantasy upside left, but he's more attractive in real life as a rotation option and innings-eater. The Cincinnati Reds have also been connected to the two-time All-Star as he heads into his 15th major-league campaign.

Wed Dec 21 202200:26Marlins Potentially Interested In Johnny Cueto
MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi reported Tuesday that the Miami Marlins would be interested in free-agent starting pitcher Johnny Cueto if they traded away starting pitcher Pablo Lopez. Per Morosi, the Marlins interest is "somewhat contingent on finding a spot for Pablo Lopez." Cueto had a solid age-36 season with the Chicago White Sox, going 8-10 with a 3.35 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 15.7% strikeout rate over 24 starts and 158 1/3 innings pitched. He posted a career-low strikeout rate but pitched very effectively, averaging over 6 1/3 innings per start. Cueto is not nearly the fantasy asset he once was, but his ability to pitch deep into games gives him some fantasy value in points leagues.

Thu Dec 15 202213:19Reds Showing Interest In Reunion With Johnny Cueto
The Cincinnati Reds have shown interest in a reunion with free-agent right-hander Johnny Cueto, according to a source. Cueto, who turns 37 years old in February, made his major-league debut with the Reds back in 2008 and made the All-Star team with them in 2014. He was very solid for the Chicago White Sox in 2022, going 8-10 with a 3.35 ERA (3.79 FIP), a 1.22 WHIP and a career-low 15.7 percent strikeout rate in 158 1/3 innings over 25 appearances (24 starts). The two-time All-Star isn't a big strikeout guy at the tail end of his career, but he's a solid innings-eater and could be a good fit for the rebuilding Reds' starting rotation.

Mon Sep 19 202219:46Johnny Cueto To Start On Thursday
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (illness) will start on Thursday against the Cleveland Guardians. Cueto didn't make his last scheduled start over the weekend against the Detroit Tigers due to dizziness, but he's since been cleared for a big series against Cleveland. The veteran 36-year-old Dominican has been solid for the Pale Hose this year, going 7-8 with a 3.09 ERA (3.94 FIP), a 1.20 WHIP, 88 strikeouts and 31 walks in 139 2/3 innings pitched over 22 appearances (21 starts). He'll be hoping to bounce back from his last outing, when he surrendered seven runs (five earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out three in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Oakland Athletics.

Fri Jul 15 202200:22Johnny Cueto Picks Up Fourth Win
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Johnny Cueto evened his record to 4-4 on the season as his club handily defeated the Twins 12-2 on Thursday. The veteran allowed one run on seven hits while striking out five and walking a pair over six frames of work, throwing 118 pitches on the evening. The only run he allowed came around in the second after Gio Urshela swatted an RBI double, as he's now posted a stellar 1.35 ERA through three starts so far in July. Cueto also hasn't allowed more than three runs in a game since the end of May as he holds a respectable 2.80 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with a 58/20 K/BB heading into the break.

Sun Jun 12 202218:57Johnny Cueto To Have Start Pushed Back
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Johnny Cueto was asked to pitch in relief during Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers. Starting pitcher Michael Kopech (knee) was unable to get through the first inning due to injury. That being said, Cueto was asked to pitch five innings out of the bullpen. This was his second relief appearance of his career. Cueto allowed three runs and gave up six hits, but soaked up five innings. The fact Cueto was forced to pitch in this game means that his next start is going to be pushed back.

Sun May 29 202200:54Johnny Cueto Allows Five Runs In Loss
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Johnny Cueto got touched up for five earned runs on Saturday as his club fell to the Cubs 5-1. Cueto struggled out of the gate by allowing three runs through the first two innings, and then he ran out of gas in the seventh frame when he allowed a couple more runs to score. He finished the night allowing nine hits and three walks while striking out two over 6 2/3 IP, tossing 98 pitches as his record dipped to 0-1. Through three starts the veteran holds a 2.41 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with a 14/7 K/BB as he looks ahead to a matchup with the Blue Jays next week.
