Chris Smith has been released by the Knicks' D-League affiliate Erie Bay Hawks.

J.R.'s brother was waived by the Knicks earlier this season after appearing in zero games. He reportedly left the Bay Hawks a few days before his release because he was upset with his playing time, and it's safe to assume that he won't join an NBA team in the near future.

The move clears a roster spot for big man Jeremy Tyler. Smith may only have landed his contract as a condition of the Knicks re-signing his brother J.R. Smith, and either way Chris wasn't going to make a dent in the rotation.

Regardless, the 'other' Smith has no fantasy appeal.

Smith played for New York during Summer League and was hoping to make the roster as a backup PG, but that seems unlikely with Beno Udrih and Pablo Prigioni as veteran depth behind Raymond Felton.

After tearing up his knee before the season started, Smith has been rehabbing at the Knicks facility and is "nearly back at full strength." Despite a previous report that the Knicks wouldn't sign him, ESPN New York reports that the team has told him he'll be on the summer league roster.
