Thu Aug 13 202023:23Rangers put RHP Volquez on 45-day IL with oblique strain
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers veteran right-hander Edinson Volquez has been put on the 45-day injured list with a right oblique strain, effectively ending his season. The Rangers made the announcement Thursday when they had an off day. A corresponding roster move will be made before Friday's game at Colorado. Volquez (2-1, 6.35 ERA) sustained the injury when working the fifth inning Tuesday against Seattle. The 37-year-old right-hander won in relief, getting one out and allowing a hit and a walk. With his win in relief Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels, Volquez got his first big league victory since 2017 with Miami, and his first for the Rangers since 2007. That was 4,719 days between wins for Texas, easily a club record. He is 95-89 with a 4.45 ERA in 294 career games (273 starts) with Texas (2005-07; 2019-20), Cincinnati (2008-11), San Diego (2012-2013), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2013), Pittsburgh (2014), Kansas City (2015-16) and Miami (2017).After going 4-8 for Miami in 2017 before Tommy John surgery, he returned as a free agent to Texas, where he spent 2018 rehabbing and then spent much of last season on the injured list with elbow issues. He made his big league debut with Texas in 2005. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Aug 12 202001:34Shaw, Blue Jays beat Marlins 5-4 in MLB's return to Buffalo
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — In the first major league game in Buffalo since 1915, Travis Shaw hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays settled into their new nest with a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.Barred from playing in Toronto by the Canadian government over concerns about the coronavirus, the Blue Jays spent nearly three weeks on the road before moving into the ballpark of their Triple-A affiliate as their temporary home this year.Francisco Cervelli’s three-run homer with two outs in the Miami ninth made it 4-all. Logan Forsythe then nearly put the Marlins ahead with a long drive in the 10th that originally was ruled a two-run homer, then reversed to a foul ball on review — the replay cameras were among the upgrades made at the park to get it up to big league standards. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out in the 10th and Shaw singled to right field for his first RBI in 25 at-bats with Toronto.Bo Bichette hit a three-run homer in the sixth and... [More]

Wed Aug 5 202001:28Retooled Marlins triumphant in return, beat Orioles 4-0
BALTIMORE (AP) — After enduring one final delay in their effort to return from an eight-day, coronavirus-induced hiatus, the Miami Marlins found enough power and pitching within their vastly overhauled roster to beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-0 Tuesday night.Francisco Cervelli and Jesús Aguilar homered for the Marlins, who had their season halted after 18 players tested positive for COVID-19 following the opening series in Philadelphia.Pablo López (1-0) threw five innings of two-hit ball and the bullpen allowed just one hit in Miami’s first shutout victory since Sept. 8 against Kansas City.Late Tuesday afternoon, the Marlins were still awaiting the result of further COVID-19 tests, a process that stalled their arrival at Camden Yards and pushed back the scheduled 7:35 p.m. start by 41 minutes.Orioles starter John Means (0-1) allowed one run and two hits in 4 2/3 innings. He retired 13 in a row before Cervelli drove a 3-1 pitch into the left-field seats to end the left-hander’s night. After... [More]
Thu Jul 16 202017:11Rangers reliever Martin on injured list because of COVID-19
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers reliever Brett Martin has been placed on the injured list because of his positive test for the coronavirus before the start of their summer camp. The move Thursday came eight days before the Rangers open their season at home against Colorado.Martin, already at higher risk for COVID-19 because he has Type 1 diabetes, had a positive test during intake testing two weeks ago. He experienced mild symptoms of the disease including congestion and fatigue.Because Martin is on the injured list due to the coronavirus, he doesn't count toward the team's 40-man roster list while on the IL. The Rangers were at 38 players after the move with Martin. The 25-year-old lefty was 2-3 with a 4.76 ERA while pitching in 51 games as a rookie last season.Rangers slugger Joey Gallo also tested positive for the coronavirus during intake testing. While the All-Star outfielder had no symptoms, he missed the first week of workouts before returning Saturday.NOTES: The Rangers are... [More]
Mon Sep 30 201918:04Rangers working to lay foundation for success in new park
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Elvis Andrus and the Texas Rangers have left the building, the ballpark the team called home for 26 seasons. While their new stadium with a retractable roof is still being built across the street, the Rangers wrapped up their first season with manager Chris Woodward confident that a solid foundation is being laid in place for success in the future on that new field."That was the expectation this year, we were going to come in and win," Woodward said. "Next year, with everything that we've kind of put in place this year, we know the process, (players) should know the processes, they should know my expectations. Now we've got to take the next step to like put all of these processes from day one."While the Rangers finished with their third consecutive losing season at 78-84, that was an 11-win improvement over 2018.There was a full season of building relationships and trust between the players and Woodward, who as a utility player saw action at every position but catcher... ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Josh Hamilton said he had forgotten how the grass looked and smelled at the home of the Texas Rangers. He hadn't been there since playing in the AL Division Series four years ago.Hamilton, the 2010 AL MVP the season the Rangers went to their first World Series, was back for the first time Saturday night for his induction into the team's hall of fame."That was fun," the five-time All-Star said after the team showed a video filled with highlights of his five-plus seasons in Texas, including big home runs and incredible catches in the outfield. The slugger's story is well-documented, from being the first overall pick out of high school in the 1999 amateur draft by Tampa Bay, to the drug and alcohol addictions that nearly destroyed his career. He was out of baseball for 3½ years before his comeback, making his big league debut with Cincinnati in 2007 before being traded to the Rangers after that season."Looking back reminds me of God's grace and his mercy," said Hamilton,...
