Tue Jan 2203:04On Basketball: Giannis' dunk wins Round 1 against Luka
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic never really squared off in their first head-to-head matchup, with the enormous exception of one game-deciding moment. The established All-Star drove the lane. The rising All-Star had no chance to stop him. There will be plenty of Giannis vs. Luka moments before their NBA careers are all said and done, but the first one came on Monday and it absolutely went Antetokounmpo's way. His dunk over Doncic with 2:50 left was a punctuation mark of sorts in Milwaukee's 116-106 win over Dallas, a game that featured a top international candidate for MVP this season against the very likely international rookie of the year.Antetokounmpo finished the dunk with a stare-down of Doncic. If there was a message in there, Antetokounmpo wasn't saying."Just a dunk," Antetokounmpo said. "It was a momentum play."Doncic — to the 19 year-old's credit — was poised enough afterward to acknowledge that he's still got a lot of room to grow before he consisten... [More]
Mon Jan 2118:34Giannis and Kostas Antetokounmpo connect in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 18,000 fans in the stands and one on the opposing bench.Monday's game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Dallas Mavericks was an impromptu reunion for brothers Giannis and Kostas Antetokounmpo, one of them likely to be announced later this week as a captain for the All-Star Game and the other still looking for his NBA debut. Kostas Antetokounmpo accompanied Dallas on its road trip, but his only on-court action came during warmups. They left the arena together, alongside their mother."I wish I'd played against him," Giannis Antetokounmpo said. "But those few moments that we spent before the game and during the game and after the game, they were amazing."So it didn't happen Monday, but an Antetokounmpo vs. Antetokounmpo matchup probably will happen eventually.A few years from now, there might be plenty of options for the family to choose from.Eldest brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo appeared in two games with New York three years ago, neither of ... Thu Jan 1715:15NBA says All-Star draft will be aired Feb. 7 on TNT
NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA's All-Star draft will be Feb. 7, and broadcast on TNT.A pair of captains will select the teams from the pool of players who will be picked as starters and reserves from each conference. The captains will be the leading vote getter in each conference, and through Thursday the NBA says the leaders are Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks and LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers.James and Golden State's Stephen Curry were captains last year, the first under the player-draft format. It was not televised last year.Fan voting continues through Monday. Starters will be announced on Jan. 24, and reserves will be announced on Jan. 31.The All-Star Game is Feb. 17 in Charlotte.___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Mon Jan 1403:29All-Star vote process meant to stop Zaza may stop Wade again
The NBA changed the All-Star voting process two years ago, in part to prevent Zaza Pachulia being elected a starter.Instead, it might keep Dwyane Wade from being one — again. Luka Doncic and Derrick Rose, too.Entering the last full week of balloting, Wade would be in a good position for a farewell All-Star start under the old system, which was solely dependent on fan votes. He's running second among Eastern Conference guards, with a sizeable gap to No. 3 Kemba Walker after the second set of returns were released last week.Doncic is second among West forwards in a bid to start as a rookie, and Rose is ahead of MVP James Harden in the second spot in the West backcourt. But fan vote is now just 50 percent of the process, a change that was made after Pachulia was undeservedly nearly elected a starter through a huge overseas push in 2016. The players' vote and a media panel each account for 25 percent, and in its first year it did stop Pachulia, who would have been elected to start by fans... [More]
Fri Jan 1118:18Giannis sits for Bucks vs. Wizards with hip, quad injuries
WASHINGTON (AP) — Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has been ruled out of the Bucks' game Friday night against the Washington Wizards because of right quadriceps soreness and a left hip contusion. It will be the third game Antetokounmpo has missed this season. The 6-foot-11 player from Greece is averaging 26.6 points, 12.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists and has emerged as an MVP candidate in his sixth season. The Bucks entered Friday with the best record in the Eastern Conference."Hopefully, it's nothing too serious," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "He got hit a few games ago, and kind of been managing it."Antetokounpo played 37 minutes Wednesday night in a victory at Houston. Milwaukee is 2-0 this season when he does not play.___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Jan 216:46On Basketball: International stars leaving mark on NBA
Go back to the 1999-2000 NBA season, and there were only two foreign-born players in the NBA who averaged 15 points per game: Dirk Nowitzki and Tim Duncan. This season, there are 24 names on that list — by far the most in league history. The NBA international imprint just keeps getting bigger, providing the sort of transformative impact the likes of which the league probably hasn't seen since the ABA merger. One of the MVP front-runners at this point is Greece's Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has led Milwaukee to the NBA's best record entering Wednesday. Dallas' Luka Doncic looks like an overwhelming favorite to become the first Slovenian rookie of the year. Cameroon's Joel Embiid might be the dominant big man in the league, and keeps getting better for Philadelphia. These aren't just some guys taking up roster spots, either. These are franchise players. At least one-third of the league's teams have a foreign-born player who would classify as its best, or at least its most important."It's bee... [More]
Mon Dec 31 201814:55Giannis, surging Bucks end 2018 with NBA's best record
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Dynamic offense jump-started the Milwaukee Bucks' season. Tighter defense has propelled them to the best record in the NBA.The Bucks are 15 games over .500, an impressive beginning for Mike Budenholzer's tenure as Milwaukee's head coach. Now comes the tough part: staying on top."At the end of the day, we can't be satisfied," forward Giannis Antetokounmpo said. "We're the No. 1 team in the East, but we got to keep pushing."True, there are no championships awarded in December. But the rest of the season looks promisingAntetokounmpo is having an MVP caliber season. He is averaging 26.6 points and 12.8 rebounds, while scoring on 66 percent of his two-point shots thanks to length and athleticism that makes him nearly unstoppable in the paint. He's a gym rat and his work ethic is contagious. Antetokounmpo was drafted by the Bucks in the first round in 2013, which was also the year that Chris Middleton arrived from Detroit in a trade. The Bucks finished 15-67 in 2013, a franc... [More]

Mon Dec 24 201813:03NBA's Christmas lineup headlined by LeBron vs. Warriors
There's no NBA Finals rematch this year on Christmas. Not technically, anyway. It's LeBron James vs. the Golden State Warriors for the fourth consecutive year on Dec. 25, though James will be wearing a Los Angeles Lakers uniform this time.It was a predictable matchup. It isn't, however, a break from tradition. That's one of the biggest misnomers about the NBA and the schedule. An NBA Finals rematch is not common, not the norm, not a guarantee for the last two teams that were standing the previous season. The league has crowned a champion every year since 1947, and the tradition of Christmas Day games started later that same year. (They've been an annual fixture since, with the exception of 1998, when a lockout didn't allow that season to begin until February.)But there have been only nine NBA Finals rematches on Dec. 25. The recent Golden State-Cleveland history may make it seem like more.James has been in five Finals rematches on Christmas, all since 2011: Miami vs. Dallas that year, Ok... [More]

Wed Dec 19 201821:24Pelicans' Davis leaves game with apparent ankle injury
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans left Wednesday night's game against the Milwaukee Bucks after appearing to injure his left ankle.Davis limped off the court and went directly to the locker room in the waning seconds of the first quarter after his legs got tangled with teammate Andrew Harrison underneath the basket as Harrison drew a charge on Milwaukee's Thon Maker.Harrison fell backward into Davis, who fell to the floor and immediately clutched his lower left leg.Davis, who also appeared shaken up on the previous play after blocking a shot and falling to the court, returned to the bench for a brief period at the start of the second quarter before again heading to locker room. The Pelicans announced he was questionable to return due to an illness.Davis scored 14 points and had five rebounds in the first quarter in a much-anticipated match-up with Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo.New Orleans entered the game short-handed in the front court due to a rash of injuries.___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/tag/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Mon Dec 17 201802:53East features MVP candidates even with LeBron in the West
With eight shopping days to Christmas, the NBA's decision to have Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo and Philadelphia's Joel Embiid in its holiday lineup is more than just sides in another hoop smorgasbord. It puts the spotlight on — and raises a question — about the MVP race, as in, who in the Eastern Conference is a legitimate contender. It's a question because the last East MVP, LeBron James going on six years ago, has moved West.Of course, the conversation has to include the biggest name to go the opposite direction this past offseason: Toronto's Kawhi Leonard, who forced his way out of San Antonio in a trade after missing most of last season with a mysterious leg injury."Oh yeah," first-year Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce declared about the East's MVP hopes."We missed Kawhi last year and the people that coached against him didn't for a reason," said Pierce, who was an assistant with the 76ers for Embiid's first two seasons. "He's a dominant two-way player. Antetokounmpo is unbelieva... [More]

CLEVELAND (AP) — Khris Middleton and Malcolm Brogdon, the second and fourth leading scorers for the Milwaukee Bucks, are out against the Cleveland Cavaliers.Middleton has a sprained right finger and Brogdon a sore left hamstring. Neither will play Friday night in the second matchup between the teams this week.Middleton is averaging 17.4 points, but is 16 of 47 from the field in the last four games. Brogdon is averaging 15.3 points and is shooting 52 percent from the field. He's made 47 percent of his 3-point attempts.Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer declined to say who would start in place of the injured players during his pregame meeting with the media.Giannis Antetokounmpo didn't play because of a sore neck Monday when the Bucks defeated the Cavaliers 108-92 in Milwaukee. Mon Dec 3 201802:17Vince Carter enjoying his decision to go to Atlanta
Vince Carter could have gone anywhere. To a contender, to chase a ring. To retirement, because he has nothing left to prove. To television, which seems like it will be his next vocation whenever his playing days end.Instead, he chose Atlanta — a young team, a rebuilding team, a team that probably has minimal chance of making the playoffs. And he's happy."I'm with a great bunch of guys," Carter said. "I enjoy helping young guys who want to learn, who are willing to be coached and let you coach them and ask questions. It's a small thing, but it's a major thing — because if you're asking questions, that means you're trying to learn and grow. And these guys are all great."He's the NBA's oldest active player, someone who turns 42 next month. When he was drafted in June 1998, neither Trae Young nor Kevin Huerter had been born yet. And they're the starting backcourt for the Hawks this season, Carter's 21st in the league, with Atlanta being the eighth team he's played with.Carter talked with... [More]
Mon Nov 26 201802:45About a quarter completed, NBA season is tough to explain
Under the former NBA schedule, the first month of the season would just be coming to a close this week. The earlier start that the league went to last year, with the regular season beginning two weeks sooner, means some teams are now already more than a quarter of the way through their 82-game schedules. The extra time doesn't make it any easier to explain things so far.The Clippers and Nuggets are up. Houston and Boston are down. Golden State has already been both, flying out to a fast start that quickly came to a halt after Stephen Curry was hurt. The restructured schedule, done to build in more opportunities for rest and fewer back-to-back games, trimmed the preseason and reduced the number of exhibition games, in some cases forcing coaches to continue tinkering around Thanksgiving when they'd prefer to be done with it by Halloween."Just like every team in the league, in November you're not going to be the same team as you are in April or May," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "So you... [More]
Thu Nov 15 201803:47Center of attention: Bucks' Brook Lopez lights out from 3
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A new nickname for Brook Lopez started floating around Twitter after the Milwaukee Bucks 7-footer had a career night from the 3-point line."Splash Mountain ." How appropriate for a self-described Disney aficionado who is quickly developing a reputation as one of the best-shooting big men in the NBA."I'm pretty partial to that honestly," Lopez said with a laugh about the moniker this week. "I'm a pretty big Disney geek ... I wear it with pride on my sleeve."Keep shooting the way he did on Sunday against the Nuggets and he might challenge the "Splash Brothers" in Golden State for 3-point supremacy.Lopez hit a career-best eight 3s and scored 28 points to help the Bucks beat Denver to split a four-game Western Conference road trip. This wasn't just a one-night-only performance, either.Entering the Bucks' game on Wednesday night against Memphis, Lopez was tied for seventh in the league in made 3s (39) and was 14th in attempts (93), shooting 41.9 percent from behind the arc... Thu Nov 1 201802:19Shoot it! Bucks looking for franchise-best 8-0 start
MILWAUKEE (AP) — On the first day of preseason camp, the Milwaukee Bucks' practice court featured squares on the floor made of blue tape at five roughly equidistant points just behind the 3-point arc. They marked proper spacing in first-year coach Mike Budenholzer's offensive system. The players picked it up pretty quickly. The Bucks are the last unbeaten team in the NBA at 7-0, tying a franchise record. The mark will be theirs alone if they can beat the Boston Celtics on Thursday night at TD Garden."It's a compliment for our team, it's a compliment for how hard we are playing and how we start the season," star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo said on Wednesday . "But we've got to keep our head down and keep getting better."The 124-109 win on Monday over Toronto showed how far they have come in such a short time under Budenholzer. The Raptors didn't have star Kawhi Leonard, who was rested. But the Bucks played without Antetokounmpo, who missed the game because he was in concussion protocol... [More]

Mon Oct 29 201813:01Will big numbers in NBA continue? Curry says wait and see
Blake Griffin had this season's highest-scoring game for all of about 24 hours before Stephen Curry bettered it — in just three quarters. Then, in Golden State's next game, after Curry poured in 51 points in a rout of Washington, Kevin Durant scored 25 in the fourth quarter, the best total of his career, and finished with 41 in a victory at New York. With the Warriors teammates' big nights and Griffin's 50-point outburst for Detroit coming in just a four-night span, it continued a torrid start for scorers that Curry said made it seem like "everybody's clicking at the same time."But count Curry among those who aren't sure the offensive onslaughts being seen now will still be seen in a few months."Those are just great players just making plays, having great nights. That's not any different than any other year," he said after Durant's big night."We're six games in. We'll see how it goes."Damian Lillard has already had a pair of 40-point nights and Kemba Walker is one point shy of doing th... [More]
