Thu Jan 2 201417:14Jeff Suppan from baseball after 17 seasons
Jeff Suppan has announced his retirement from baseball.
Suppan didn't pitch professionally this past season, but he purposely waited until 2 p.m. Pacific time on January 2 to make the announcement in order to honor his mother, who passed away at that exact time six years ago. The 39-year-old compiled a 140-146 record and a 4.70 ERA over 17 seasons in the majors. He'll likely be remembered best for his postseason contributions with the Cardinals in 2004 and 2006.

Jeff Suppan is considering running for congress.
Suppan has struggled to attract interest from major league teams this winter and may run as a Republican for the Ventura County-based 26th District in California if he doesn't get an offer soon. The 38-year-old right-hander posted a 5.28 ERA in 30 2/3 innings last season with the Padres.

Fri Jun 1 201217:58Padres DFA Jeff Suppan
Padres designated RHP Jeff Suppan for assignment.
The move clears a spot for catcher Yasmani Grandal on the 40-man roster. Suppan was knocked around for six runs over five innings on Monday and holds a 5.28 ERA in six starts this year. It's possible this is the end of the road for the 37-year-old right-hander. The Padres have yet to announce his replacement in the rotation for Sunday.

Wed May 23 201223:19Suppan yields five runs in loss to Cards
Jeff Suppan was shelled for eight hits and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Cardinals.
Suppan struggled from start to finish against his former team, yielding three runs in the first inning and another two before being pulled in the bottom of the fifth. The veteran righty is simply not a fantasy option.

Sat May 19 201201:33Jeff Suppan gives up four runs in loss
Jeff Suppan surrendered four runs and walked five in five innings against the Angels on Friday.
With a 0/5 K/BB ratio, it's pretty remarkable that Suppan managed to give up just the four runs. He probably would have gotten knocked out of the park by a hotter offense.

Sun May 13 201217:11Jeff Suppan contains Phillies in loss
Jeff Suppan kept the party going in Sunday's loss to the Phillies, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings of work.
He struck out one and walked none. It looked like the jig might be up after Suppan allowed a leadoff home run to Jimmy Rollins, but he settled down to toss his third straight strong outing since joining the Padres' rotation on May 2. As suggested by his absurd 4/4 K/BB ratio through 16 innings, Suppan won't keep up at anywhere near the rate he's been going, but making half of his starts in Petco Park, he's very much a must own in NL-only leagues.

Wed May 9 201201:51Jeff Suppan wins second straight for Padres
Jeff Suppan moved to 2-0 for the Padres after allowing one run in five innings Tuesday against the Rockies.
Five relievers combined to make a one-run lead stand up, giving Suppan the win. We'd still recommend shying away from Suppan in NL-only leagues, but he certainly has been a nice stopgap for the Padres so far.

Wed May 2 201216:19Jeff Suppan called up
Padres purchased the contract of RHP Jeff Suppan from Triple-A Tucson.
He'll get the start Wednesday in place of Cory Luebke. Suppan, 37, hasn't pitched in the majors in a couple years and holds a 12.15 ERA and 3.00 WHIP in 6 2/3 innings this season at Tucson, so he can be avoided for fantasy purposes.

Tue May 1 201219:04Suppan to pitch Wednesday vs. Brewers
Jeff Suppan will be called up by the Padres to pitch Wednesday afternoon against the Brewers.
Cory Luebke is being skipped because of tightness in his left elbow. Suppan, 37, has posted a rough 12.15 ERA and 3.00 WHIP in 6 2/3 innings this season at Triple-A Tuscon and should be avoided like the plague in fantasy leagues.

Giants released RHP Jeff Suppan.

Thu Jan 20 201119:26Giants finalize one-year deal with Suppan
Giants signed RHP Jeff Suppan to a minor league contract.
Suppan still has to make the team out of spring training to trigger his $1 million salary, and that's not going to be an easy feat. The Giants are already locked into five rotation candidates and they don't necessarily have an opening in the bullpen. On top of that, Suppan posted a miserable 5.06 ERA and 1.56 WHIP last season and turned 36 years old earlier this month.

Thu Jan 20 201114:03Giants close to inking Suppan to minors deal
According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are close to signing Jeff Suppan to a minor league contract.
The deal would reportedly pay Suppan $1 million if he makes the team and includes an opt-out clause in late-March if he is not on the Opening Day roster. The 36-year-old Suppan had a 5.06 ERA last season, but at least finished strong as a member of the Cardinals, posting a 3.84 ERA over 70 1/3 innings after joining the team in June. He would function as insurance for the starting rotation in San Francisco.
