Fri Feb 18 201110:54Jim Edmonds ends comeback bid with Cards
Jim Edmonds has ended his comeback bid.
The Cardinals gave Edmonds a minor league contract and an invitation to spring training earlier this month, but he's still having problems with his surgically-repaired Achilles tendon and has now decided to shut it down. It's not yet known if he will try again mid-summer. Edmonds is sitting on 393 career homers and 1,949 career hits.

Sun Feb 13 201111:40Edmonds' status 'less and less clear'
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports that Jim Edmonds' (Achilles) status is "becoming less and less clear."
Edmonds has yet to take a physical for the Cardinals despite having surgery a month ago, and even manager Tony La Russa has admitted that there's uncertainty surrounding the 40-year-old, saying the last time he talked to him, Edmonds was "hobbled." The veteran's return to St. Louis for a shot at 400 home runs and 2,000 hits would be a nice little story, but it's looking possible that it might not happen. The team is hoping they can get Edmonds in for a physical sometime this week.

Sat Feb 12 201110:09Cards hope Edmonds passes physical next week
The Cardinals have yet to schedule a physical for Jim Edmonds but hope he can pass it sometime next week.
GM John Mozeliak said the agreement they had with Edmonds was "open-ended" in order to allow him time to recover from foot surgery that he had last month. The team basically took Edmonds at his word that he's healthy, but the 40-year-old will still need to pass a physical in order to officially join the team. He's hoping to win a bench spot in spring training.

Sat Feb 5 201110:01Edmonds had surgery last month
It's been revealed that Jim Edmonds had surgery last month to repair an Achilles tendon injury that had been giving him severe pain in his left foot.
Edmonds' availability down the stretch last season was limited due to the injury, and he eventually shut it down late in the year. The Cardinals signed him to a minor league deal Friday but admitted they're not sure where he is physically and are by no means guaranteeing him a roster spot. He still must pass a physical. "There is still some uncertainty about where he is physically," GM John Mozeliak said. "I'm not writing him in in any way yet. It's an opportunity. It's still too early to tell if everything is perfect or not. He's certainly optimistic."

Fri Feb 4 201116:44Cards GM not sure where Edmonds' health is
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak admits that the team hasn't seen Jim Edmonds work out recently and they're not sure where the outfielder is physically.
Mozeliak took Edmonds at his word that he's ready physically to compete for a roster spot. "Frankly that is a legitimate question, where is he physically," Mozeliak said. "But the reason we felt it made sense was because of what he has done for this organization and the history he has here. Obviously it's pending his physical condition but the hope is that he can contribute." Edmonds dealt with an Achilles problem in 2010, but he still has some juice left in his bat and could be a useful pinch-hitter that will occasionally see time in the outfield and perhaps at first base.

Fri Feb 4 201115:10Cardinals bring back Edmonds on minors deal
Cardinals signed OF Jim Edmonds to a minor league contract.
Interesting. Edmonds of course had his glory years in St. Louis as part of "MV3" with Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen, but they parted ways when he felt he was still an everyday player but the Cards wanted to turn to Colby Rasmus. He had a solid .276/.342/.504 batting line with 11 homers over 246 at-bats for the Brewers and Reds this past season but battled a nagging Achilles injury down the stretch. He's not guaranteed a bench spot but seems likely to earn one and will have a chance to hit his 400th home run with the team he is most identified with.
Thu Feb 3 201108:58Edmonds waiting on retirement decision
Jim Edmonds is waiting until a doctor's appointment, likely early next week, before he decides whether he will return for another season.
The 40-year-old Edmonds batted .276/.342/.504 with 11 home runs and an .846 OPS over 272 plate appearances last season, but while he was plenty productive, he also suffered a nagging Achilles injury. At his age, there are obviously some health concerns to think about. Edmonds will likely fall short of the Hall of Fame, even if he comes back for another season, but there's little doubt that he has been one of the best all-around outfielders of his generation.

Mon Jan 31 201115:55Edmonds' decision to play or not: coming soon
Jim Edmonds is expected to make a retirement decision early next week.
The 40-year-old outfielder is weighing the pros and cons about playing a 17th professional season. He's drawn some interest and could probably get an invitation to a few minor league camps, but Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said Sunday that he expects Edmonds will retire.

Sat Jan 29 201113:44Jim Edmonds expected to retire
Reds GM Walt Jocketty expects Jim Edmonds to retire rather than return for a 17th season.
"Jay (Bruce) talked to him the other day," Jocketty said. "He's probably going to retire." After taking a year off, Edmonds batted .276/.342/.504 this past season with 11 home runs in 246 at-bats for the Brewers and Reds. He had been open to returning if he could find a job as a backup first baseman, but it looks like he's going to hang up his cleats. If he does, he'll finish seven homers short of 400 and one RBI short of 1,200.

Wed Dec 1 201010:23Edmonds open to returning for another year
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that free agent veteran Jim Edmonds is open to returning for a 17th professional season.
Edmonds will have to find a job as a backup first baseman or designated hitter in order for it to work. He struggled to stay healthy when asked to the play the outfield in 2010 and won't be any good to a team if he's in constant need of days off. The 40-year-old is a .284/.376/.527 career hitter and batted .276/.342/.504 this year with 11 home runs in 246 at-bats.

Tue Oct 12 201010:57Edmonds hoping to find backup first base job
Jim Edmonds is open to returning for another season if he is able to find a job as a backup first baseman.
Edmonds played in only 86 games this year and strained his Achilles tendon in late September while playing for the Reds. He no longer has the durability to play the outfield, even in a backup capacity, and could struggle to land a job as a bench bat this offseason despite the positive offensive results that he posted in 2010. The 40-year-old is a .284/.376/.527 career hitter.

Mon Oct 4 201012:20Edmonds to play in simulated game Monday
Jim Edmonds (ankle) will hit in a simulated game Monday.
The 40-year-old outfielder told reporters that his once-torn Achilles tendon is now in stable condition and that treatment might allow him to play in the postseason. "There are things they can do with medication," said Edmonds. He will have to put on a show in this afternoon's simulated action.

Fri Oct 1 201018:03Baker uncertain about Edmonds' status
Reds manager Dusty Baker is uncertain whether Jim Edmonds will test his Achilles tendon by getting into a game this weekend.
"It depends. You don't want to get him in a game and go backwards when he is just coming forward a little bit," said Baker. "We don't know how far forward. We'll have to make a decision if it would be better to wait an extra week for the next round." Edmonds just received a cortisone shot on Wednesday to deal with the lingering discomfort. It looks like the NLCS, at best, for the 40-year-old outfielder.

Thu Sep 30 201016:05Edmonds still hoping to make playoff roster
Jim Edmonds said Thursday that he is still hoping to make the Reds' playoff roster despite lingering discomfort in his Achilles tendon.
Sounds like a pipe dream. The 40-year-old has provided some of baseball's most famous playoff moments, from home runs to game-saving catches, but torn Achilles tendons don't heal quickly and Edmonds is facing quite an uphill battle. He has not yet decided on his playing status for next season.

Fri Sep 24 201023:14Edmonds doubts he'll be ready for playoffs
Jim Edmonds (Achilles) doubts whether he will be ready to return in time for the playoffs.
"I've run out of patience with this, I guess," said Edmonds. "I've been going the whole year flirting with 'What am I doing here?' just because it's so sore. I am going to do everything I can, but I'm running out of time. I don't think it's going to get better. Right now, it's as bad if not the worst it's been the whole year." The 40-year-old outfielder has been bothered by a sore right Achilles tendon for most of the season, but severely aggravated the injury during a home run trot on Tuesday. Edmonds moving around a little better since and is receiving treatment in the form of electric stimulation, but his status is in doubt.

Wed Sep 22 201018:11Jim Edmonds does not have Achilles tear
Tests Wednesday showed that Jim Edmonds does not have a torn Achilles.
Edmonds feared the worst when he was injured while running the bases after a home run Tuesday. "It didn't blow out or tear," he said. "So it's not over yet." The veteran remains sore but should be available eventually.

Wed Sep 22 201008:37Edmonds believes he may have torn Achilles
Jim Edmonds believes he may have torn his right Achilles tendon during his home run trot Tuesday night.
"Something popped when I was running around the bases," said Edmonds. "The first couple of steps, I felt like I completely popped it. I was just worried about what my next step was going to feel like. I had to slow down for a second. I realized my foot wasn't falling off and I tried to keep jogging. It was pretty painful. It was just the same battle all year long. It gets better, it gets worse. This is the first time it's really popped or felt like it tore. We'll see what happens." He'll need to undergo tests in order to confirm the injury, but if it is truly torn, his season and career could be over.

Tue Sep 21 201020:45Edmonds leaves with strained right leg
Jim Edmonds left Tuesday's game against the Brewers due to a strained right leg.
It looked like Edmonds pulled up lame coming around second base after he launched a solo home run in the top of the second inning. The veteran outfielder has been bothered by Achilles tendinitis since the early part of the season, so we wouldn't be surprised to learn that the injuries are connected. Miguel Cairo replaced him at first base on defense in the bottom of the second inning.

Fri Sep 17 201022:05Edmonds hopes to be in lineup Saturday
Jim Edmonds hopes to be in the starting lineup Saturday.
Edmonds flew out as a pinch-hitter Thursday in his first at-bat since coming back from the DL. It had looked like his oblique injury might end his season, but that appears not to be the case.
