Bootcheck held a 3.57 ERA over 16 games -- seven starts -- at Triple-A Durham in the Rays organization in 2011 before finishing the year off in Korea. The Tigers will give him a shot to win a bullpen role, but his 6.54 ERA in 147 1/3 career major league innings suggests that his likely destination to start the year is Triple-A Toledo.

Bootcheck opted out of his minor league deal with the Rays last week after posting a 3.57 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 58 innings for Triple-A Durham. The 32-year-old will likely be given a substantial raise in Korea before presumably trying to return to the majors at some point.

He may get a chance to start somewhere.

There are certainly spots up for grabs in the Rays bullpen, but Bootcheck isn't going to be a difference maker even if he manages to crack the opening day roster.
