RHP Jean Machi was designated for assignment to make room for RHP Ryan Weber, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Tacoma to make the start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. The 35-year-old is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in five relief outings with the Mariners since being called up May 2. He pitched 2 1/3 innings in the 4-0 loss to the Blue Jays on Friday. "He did a nice job (Friday) night and he obviously was going to be down for a couple of days," manager Scott Servais said. "It's a lot of roster mechanics that you have to juggle here. And that's why you trust the guys in the front office and they understand that stuff better than I do, quite frankly, in how to hold as much depth as you can. A lot of it comes back to, we are very thin at starting pitcher right now. We've got to keep as many guys that can start a game for us as possible. That plays into these decisions."

RHP Jean Machi had to leave Friday night's game with a thumb injury. Machi came on in the 11th, walked the first batter he faced, induced a double-play groundout, then he walked another batter before coming out of the game with a trainer.

RHP Jean Machi, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day, pitched the ninth and 10th innings Tuesday against the Angels, allowing just one hit without giving up a run. It was his first major league appearance since 2015, when he split the season between San Francisco and Boston. The 35-year-old was 1-0 with four saves in eight relief appearances with Tacoma this season.

RHPs Jean Machi refused an outright assignment to the minors and elected to become a free agent on Nov. 6. Machi, 33, went a combined 2-0 with four saves and a 5.12 ERA in 59 relief appearances for the Giants and the Red Sox this year. He would have been eligible for arbitration if he remained on the 40-man roster this winter.

Machi slipped in the bullpen and cut his ear before coming out to pitch in the eighth inning of Saturday's win over the Blue Jays, the Boston Globe reports. He was bleeding some, but managed to strike out Russell Martin before allowing an inherited runner to score on an RBI single.
Machi got some save opportunities early on after Koji Uehara was shut down with a wrist injury, but has been used primarily in a set up role since a Sept. 4 flame out against the Phillies. Machi has pitched 6.1 scoreless innings since then, but Robbie Ross is the only reliever to pick up a save in that time. The Red Sox are operating without a true closer at this point, so we're not counting Machi out from getting a save chance or two before the end of the season. If a save-situation arose where interim manager Torey Lovullo thought Machi was the right matchup, he'd get the opportunity.

Machi came apart in a non-save situation, allowing three runs on four hits while recording just two outs in Boston's 7-5 win over Philadelphia on Friday night.
Machi was recently named the Red Sox' closer, replacing an ineffective Junichi Tazawa, but this certainly wasn't a confidence builder. He entered the game to begin the ninth and Boston leading 7-2, but he gave way to Robbie Ross (who notched his first save) after being torched for the three runs. His status as the team's closer is likely up in the air just now.

Machi held on to record his fourth save of the season after giving up a run on three walks and a hit in Monday night's win over the Yankees.
Boston's recently anointed closer made it interesting, throwing just 15 strikes in 33 pitches. Machi is a closer so that carries some value, but he's a closer with a 5.68 ERA and seven walks in 12.2 innings since joining the Red Sox.
Sun Aug 30 201514:13Machi will serve as Red Sox's closer moving forward
Machi will serve as the Red Sox's closer moving forward, CSN New England reports.
Machi hasn't pitched all that well for the Red Sox (5.40 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 46.2 innings), but he represents the lesser of two evils at this point, and will take on closing duties because of his past experience in that role. Junichi Tazawa, who was closing out games, will now serve in a setup role.

Machi picked up the save Saturday night, throwing a scoreless ninth inning in a win over the Mets.

Machi picked up his second save for the Red Sox in Monday's win against the White Sox despite allowing two runs on three hits.
Machi has been brutal for the Red Sox, as he now owns a 6.75 ERA and a 7:4 K:BB in 9.1 innings for Boston. Junichi Tazawa was unavailable after throwing 30 pitches last night and has recorded Boston's two previous saves.

Machi came on in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's win over the Indians. He allowed two runs and an inherited runner to score while giving up a hit and a walk in one-third of an inning.
Machi, who is still a candidate to pick up saves, entered Wednesday's game with Boston holding a five-run lead. It didn't become a save opportunity until he made it so with his performance. Junichi Tazawa came on in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

Machi pitched a perfect ninth inning in a non-save situation Tuesday against the Indians.
The Red Sox have not provided Machi with a save situation recently, but he has a streak of six scoreless innings going and appears to be the best bet for saves in Boston's bullpen going forward.
Wed Aug 12 201519:11Machi pitched eighth inning of Tuesday night's loss to Marlins
Machi pitched the eighth inning of Tuesday night's loss to the Marlins. He threw a scoreless inning, allowing a walk, a hit and striking out one, setting up a save opportunity for Junichi Tazawa, who blew the save.
Since it was announced that Koji Uehara (wrist) was lost for the season, the identity of Boston's fill-in closer has been closely watched. Manager John Farrell hasn't named one reliever as the fill-in, but he did mention Machi and Tazawa as candidates. Tazawa was given the opportunity Tuesday night based on the matchups, according to fill-in manager Torey Lovullo.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Machi will fill in as the team's closer, replacing Koji Uehara, who will miss the rest of the season with a wrist injury, the Boston Globe reports.
Machi, who has three career saves, finished off Sunday's game in a non-save situation at a time when Uehara's injury wasn't diagnosed as a season-ending one.

Machi finished off Sunday's win over the Tigers in a non-save situation. He pitched a scoreless inning, walking one and striking out two in Boston's 7-2 win.
With Koji Uehara (wrist) unavailable for an undetermined amount of time, the Red Sox will need to find someone to close out games. Manager John Farrell has not yet anointed Machi or any other reliever as the fill-in closer, but the right-hander showed decent fastball velocity Sunday (94 mph) and could be used in the role.

Machi made his Boston debut Saturday, picking up a save in 1.1 innings against Tampa Bay.
Don't raise an eyebrow at the save opportunity; Koji Uehara is still Boston's closer. Machi entered the game in the eighth inning with a three-run lead that increased to five runs.
Thu Jul 30 201519:02Machi added to Boston's 25-man roster on Thursday
Machi was added to Boston's 25-man roster on Thursday.
Machi was claimed off waivers Tuesday after being designated for assignment by the Giants last week. The veteran right-hander will add some depth to Boston's bullpen. The Red Sox designated Daniel Nava for assignment to clear a roster spot for Machi.
Tue Jul 28 201515:35Machi claimed off waivers by Red Sox on Tuesday
Machi was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on Tuesday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
Machi was designated for assignment by the Giants last week, and now the right-handed veteran will join the Red Sox. Boston placed Clay Buchholz on the 60-day disabled list in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for Machi. In 33 appearances with the Giants this season, Machi posted a 5.14 ERA (4.21 FIP) with 22 strikeouts and 14 walks.
