He entered the game to begin the ninth and Boston leading 7-2, but he gave way to Robbie Ross (who notched his first save) after being torched for the three runs. His status as the team's closer is likely up in the air just now.

Machi held on to record his fourth save of the season after giving up a run on three walks and a hit in Monday night's win over the Yankees.

Boston's recently anointed closer made it interesting, throwing just 15 strikes in 33 pitches. Machi is a closer so that carries some value, but he's a closer with a 5.68 ERA and seven walks in 12.2 innings since joining the Red Sox.

Machi will serve as the Red Sox's closer moving forward, CSN New England reports.

Machi hasn't pitched all that well for the Red Sox (5.40 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 46.2 innings), but he represents the lesser of two evils at this point, and will take on closing duties because of his past experience in that role. Junichi Tazawa, who was closing out games, will now serve in a setup role.

Machi, who is still a candidate to pick up saves, entered Wednesday's game with Boston holding a five-run lead. It didn't become a save opportunity until he made it so with his performance. Junichi Tazawa came on in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

The Red Sox have not provided Machi with a save situation recently, but he has a streak of six scoreless innings going and appears to be the best bet for saves in Boston's bullpen going forward.
