New Orleans Pelicans rookie guard Bryce Dejean-Jones died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen, his agent told ESPN Saturday. He was 23.The Dallas, Texas, County Coroner also confirmed Dejean-Jones' death to NBC Sports."Bryce overcame a lot of obstacles to get to this point in his career," said his agent, Scott Nichols. "He was a joy to be around, a talent just turning the corner in his career."Dejean-Jones, who was undrafted, signed a three-year contract with the Pelicans in February after playing consecutive 10-day contracts. He averaged 5.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 19.9 minutes over 14 games (11 starts). His season ended when he had surgery for a broken right wrist.Dejean-Jones played collegiately at USC, UNLV and Iowa State.

The New Orleans Pelicans signed guard Bryce Dejean-Jones and waived forward Jarnell Stokes on Friday.Dejean-Jones played under back-to-back, 10-day contracts with the Pelicans leading up to last weekend's All-Star break.The 6-foot-6, 203-pound Dejean-Jones, 23, has appeared in 11 games (eight starts) for the Pelicans, averaging 6.3 points and 3.5 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per game.Prior to joining New Orleans, Dejean-Jones played for the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League, appearing in nine games (seven starts) and averaging 19.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.0 steals in 31.1 minutes per game.The 6-9, 255-pound Stokes, 22, was acquired from the Miami Heat, along with cash considerations, shortly before Thursday's NBA trade deadline in exchange for a future second-round draft pick.Stokes has appeared in 26 career NBA games with Miami and Memphis, holding career averages of 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game.
