PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have waived guard Isaiah Canaan.Canaan appeared in 19 games, 15 as a starter at point guard this season, but his playing time diminished as Devin Booker took over the starting point guard spot lately.Canaan is in his eighth NBA season. He has played for Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston and Phoenix, averaging 8.4 points per game in his career. His season was cut short a year ago by a gruesome ankle injury.Phoenix did not make any corresponding roster move after waiving Canaan on Wednesday.

"We have more shooting. We have potentially a better defensive team. And we have a lot of veteran guys to teach our young guys how to win and help them win."But one glaring question remains. PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have re-signed point guard Isaiah Canaan.Canaan, entering his sixth NBA season, signed with Phoenix last Dec. 13 and appeared in 19 games before breaking his left ankle Jan. 31 against Dallas, requiring season-ending surgery.He averaged nine points and four assists in his brief time with the team, including a 17-point game in a victory at Dallas on Dec. 18. Canaan has appeared in 209 NBA games for Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Phoenix, averaging 8.4 points and 1.8 assists.He was a second-round draft pick — the 34th selection overall — by Houston in 2013 after a standout career at Murray State.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns acquired point guard Elfrid Payton from the Orlando Magic on Thursday for a second-round pick this summer.Payton is averaging a career-high 13.0 points and shooting career bests of 52.0 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from 3-point range this season. He also is averaging 6.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds."We are excited to add a player of Elfrid's caliber to our young core," Suns general manager Ryan McDonough said a team release. "Elfrid is an athletic point guard who has good size, length and a feel for the game. We think he'll be a great fit with our team."Payton is in his fourth NBA season.The pick sent to Orlando was secured by the Suns along with guard Troy Daniels in a deal with the Grizzlies in September.To make room for Payton, the Suns waived injured guard Isaiah Canaan. He broke his left ankle Jan. 1 and had surgery Feb. 1."We still consider Isaiah to be a member of the Phoenix Suns family," McDonough said. "In speaking with Isaiah and his agent, we are fully committed to doing everything we can to help him with his rehab and recovery from his injury. This move is being made strictly to create a roster spot with Isaiah being out for the remainder of the season."

PHOENIX (AP) — Suns guard Isaiah Canaan broke his left ankle Wednesday night in a gruesome injury against the Dallas Mavericks.The backup point guard was fouled as he drove to the basket in the final seconds of the first quarter. His ankle gave way on a hard, awkward landing, and his left foot was pointing in the wrong direction as his body tumbled to the floor.As trainers rushed to Canaan, the crowd groaned and some of his shocked teammates covered their eyes or looked away. Phoenix guard Devin Booker pulled his jersey over his face.Team doctor Tom Carter twisted the foot and ankle back into their proper positions and said afterward that Canaan never uttered a word of pain.He was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled off the court."It's hard for fans and everyone sitting right there, and teammates especially, a guy they battle with every day. It's their friend on and off the court," Suns interim coach Jay Triano said. "I used the timeout to let us say a quick prayer and get us refocused again to keep playing."Not much can we do. He was in the hands of our medical staff and we trust they do their job and we had to keep doing ours."Phoenix won 102-88 to halt a five-game losing streak.Triano said Canaan would undergo surgery on Thursday.In his fifth NBA season, Canaan was signed by the Suns on Dec. 13 after being waived by Houston on Oct. 28. The Chicago Bulls waived Rajon Rondo on Friday, ending the point guard's stint with the team after one season.Rondo had a team option worth nearly $13.4 million that would have become fully guaranteed if Chicago hadn't waived him by Friday. He will instead receive $3 million by being released.The Bulls also waived reserve guard Isaiah Canaan.Rondo averaged 7.8 points and 6.7 assists in 69 games for the Bulls. He started just 42 contests as he was benched for a time by coach Fred Hoiberg in December and didn't return to the starting lineup until late in the season.Rondo, 31, will be playing for his fifth organization in the past four seasons. He was a four-time All-Star during 8 1/2 seasons with the Boston Celtics but hasn't come close to his previous form in stints with the Dallas Mavericks (46 games), Sacramento Kings (one season) and the Bulls.Canaan averaged 4.6 points in 39 games for the Bulls. He has an 8.4 career average in four seasons with the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers and the Bulls.

Chicago Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo will not play in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night after hoping for an early return from his broken right thumb.Rondo told reporters at Wednesday morning's shootaround that his broken thumb is not healed enough for him to play in Boston. He also said it is too early to determine his status for Game 6 in Chicago on Friday night."I'm not playing," Rondo said. "The slightest fall on the floor might further damage it. ... My thumb is the same as it was last week. The Chicago Bulls added depth to their backcourt on Wednesday by signing guard Isaiah Canaan to a contract.Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team for Canaan, who averaged a career-high 11.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists with Philadelphia last season. The 25-year-old connected on 176-of-485 3-point attempts in 2015-16."We are excited to add Isaiah to our group," Bulls general manager Gar Forman said in a statement.
