Mon Jul 1 201909:20AP source: Pelicans acquiring Derrick Favors from Jazz
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the New Orleans Pelicans have acquired veteran center Derrick Favors from the Utah Jazz in exchange for a pair of second-round draft choices. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal has not been announced. The Jazz dealt away 6-foot-10 Favors shortly after agreeing to contract terms with free agent center Bojan Bogdanovic, who played for Indiana last season.Favors, who'll be 28 next season, was the Nets' first round draft choice in 2010 and was traded during his rookie season to Utah. He brings career averages of 11.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks to New Orleans, where he'll join two other centers — veteran Jahlil Okafor and No. 8 overall draft pick Jaxson Hayes — on the roster. Christian Wood, a 6-10 forward signed by New Orleans late last season, also can play center.___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the New Orleans Pelicans have picked up a team option on center Jahlil Okafor's contract through next season. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team did not announce the transaction. The 6-foot-11 Okafor, drafted third overall by Philadelphia in 2015, averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds in largely a reserve role for New Orleans last season, but he often thrived when he started or played significant minutes. He scored 10 or more points 21 times last season — including in five of his final six games — and finished with 30 points in regular-season finale. His productivity in New Orleans represented a turnaround from two seasons ago, when he says he struggled with depression and averaged 6.3 points in a season split between Philadelphia and Brooklyn.___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Thu Feb 21 201920:30Pelicans interim GM: NBA rules compel club to play Davis
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — When the Pelicans finished practice on Thursday, Anthony Davis went into coach Alvin Gentry's office, followed later by interim general manager Danny Ferry. As they spoke, privacy shades on windows that otherwise offer a view of practice courts were pulled down. After the meeting, Gentry said Davis was slated to start at Indiana on Friday night. Later, Ferry said Davis, if healthy, would continue to play for the Pelicans — albeit in a scaled-back role."League rules made it clear that Anthony has to play," Ferry said on a conference call with New Orleans reporters on Thursday night. "As we've done previously, we'll continue to follow their lead. But we'll also be focused on the future of the team. Therefore, you'll see a reduction in Anthony's minutes."That reduction could even mean sitting out Davis entirely for certain games, such as when the Pelicans are at home, not on national television and playing for the second time in two nights. That will be the case on Saturday... [More]
Thu Feb 21 201917:00Anthony Davis to remain in Pelicans' lineup, for now
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — When Pelicans finished practice on Thursday, Anthony Davis went into coach Alvin Gentry's office, followed later by interim general manager Danny Ferry. As they spoke, privacy shades on windows that otherwise offer a view of practice courts were pulled down. After the meeting, Gentry said Davis was slated to start at Indiana on Friday night. But beyond that, the Pelicans weren't ready to shed much light on how they plan to handle having their disaffected six-time All-Star on the roster for the final seven weeks of the regular season."He's playing tomorrow," Gentry said repeatedly in response to varying questions about Davis' status with the club. "He's playing the game tomorrow. Let's get to that one and then we can worry about everything else."On Saturday night, the Pelicans are scheduled to host LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.Davis, who is represented by the same agent as James, has requested a trade. The Lakers tried to acquire Davis before this season's Feb.... [More]
Sat Feb 9 201904:35Pelicans balancing Davis' playing time with future concerns
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Even with one foot out the door, Anthony Davis is showing he can still produce prolific statistics for the New Orleans Pelicans. He only needed 25 minutes to score 32-points in his first game for New Orleans since requesting a trade nearly two weeks ago. Davis also had nine rebounds and three blocks in a 122-117 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.Whether his presence in the lineup is sustainable for a club that is trying to move on without him — and protect his trade value by keeping him healthy — remains to be seen. But for now, coach Alvin Gentry and other Pelicans veterans sound inclined to try to make it work."He's obviously made it known that he won't sign back, but he still loves the game of basketball. I know that he loves us as players, and he's going to go out there and play as hard as he can," Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday said. "If Anthony's out there, that's the best chance of us winning."The Pelicans entered their game at Memphis on Saturday... [More]
