INF/OF Jose Pirela remains day-to-day with a sprained left pinkie, an injury he sustained sliding into third base on Sept. 10. He has been limited to hitting in the indoor batting cage and unable to take batting practice, something the Padres didn't do before Sunday's game. Manager Andy Green said before the game, "At this point in time, he hadn't taken swings yet. He had a bat in his hands, and he was going to take swings in the cage. Hopefully he's getting closer. Hands are tough to gauge. Whenever he's good to go, he's good to go. That doesn't mean it's a day or two; it's whatever time it takes."

INF/OF Jose Pirela remains day-to-day with a sprained left pinkie, an injury he suffered sliding into third base Sunday at Arizona. Pirela has not progressed to the point where he can take batting practice and has been limited to taking swings in the indoor batting cage. Manager Andy Green said Pirela's condition was about the same Saturday as it was a day earlier. "Whenever he can tolerate the swing and it doesn't bother him, he'll be out her playing again," Green said. "He's going through progressions in the cage, kind of seeing what he can handle. He doesn't feel quite right yet, and with the pinkie that he hurt, it's the left pinkie which takes all the pressure from the hands on the bat. It's been tough."
