Fri Jul 30 201017:54Cubs release RHP Howry
Cubs released RHP Bob Howry.
Howry isn't so far removed from being a useful reliever, but this is the second time he's been released this year. He had allowed 19 runs -- 13 earned -- in 20 2/3 innings for the Cubs. Considering that he struck out just eight in that span, he should probably be written off for the rest of this year, if not forever.
Wed Jul 28 201017:27Cubs' Howry struggling in relief
Bobby Howry gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning of relief Wednesday versus the Astros.
Howry might soon find himself released by a second team this year. He's allowed 19 runs -- 13 earned -- and struck out just eight in 20 2/3 innings since signing with the Cubs in May.
Fri May 21 201016:50Cubs sign RHP Howry
Cubs signed RHP Bob Howry.
Who would have thought that Howry would ever return to the Cubs after posting a 5.35 ERA and giving up 13 homers for the team in 2008? He opened this year by allowing 17 runs and six homers in 14 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks. Still, given the alternatives, it's hard to blame the Cubs for giving him one more shot.
Thu May 20 201013:25Howry could join Cubs soon
According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, indications are that the recently-released Bob Howry "will be in a Cubs uniform very soon."
"If it happens, it will give us some experience in the bullpen from the right side," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella. "When he was with us, he was a rock in the clubhouse and great with the young pitchers." Howry, 36, posted a 10.67 ERA over his first 14 appearances before being released by the Diamondbacks on Monday. He posted a 3.90 ERA with the Cubs from 2006-2008.

Mon May 17 201013:27Diamondbacks dump right-hander Bob Howry
Diamondbacks released RHP Bob Howry.
Not a great showing from the right-handed setup man in Arizona. Howry inked a one-year, $2 million contract this offseason -- and will probably get to keep all of it -- but allowed a ridiculous 17 earned runs in 20 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks this season. He packed his things Monday. Still, we'd bet that his 1.15 WHIP from last year will land him a shot elsewhere.
