Sat Sep 16 202318:58Ian Kennedy Placed On The 60-Day Injured List
Texas Rangers relief pitcher Ian Kennedy (shoulder) has been placed on the 60-day injured list with a strained right rotator cuff. The 38-year-old veteran mostly struggled this season, putting up a 7.16 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 21:7 K/BB ratio over 16 1/3 innings (16 appearances). His season is now done, even if the Rangers were to make a deep playoff run. Left-handed pitcher Jake Latz had his contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

Tue Jun 20 202321:53Rangers Sign Ian Kennedy To Minor-League Deal Tuesday
The Texas Rangers and righty Ian Kennedy have agreed to a minor league deal on Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. The 17-year veteran pitched earlier this season with Texas, making 11 appearances while posting a 7.20 ERA before the club designated him for assignment in early May. The Rangers have a solid bullpen with William Smith leading the charge, so Kennedy will certainly just be used as depth. This news has no effect on any fantasy league at the moment, and even if he's promoted later in 2023, he likely won't pitch in a high-leverage role.

Thu May 11 202316:00Ian Kennedy Designated For Assignment
The Texas Rangers designated right-hander Ian Kennedy for assignment on Thursday and recalled left-hander John King from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move. Kennedy is moved off the team's 40-man roster after allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out 13 in 10 relief innings for the Rangers this year. The 38-year-old reliever also struggled with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022 to the tune of a 5.36 ERA (5.58 FIP), 1.57 WHIP, 10 saves and 44 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings pitched. Kennedy has recorded 66 saves since 2019, but he could be nearing the end of the line after 17 years in the big leagues.

Fri Jan 27 202313:10Ian Kennedy Agrees With Rangers
Free-agent right-hander Ian Kennedy announced in his official Instagram page on Friday that he has agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Texas Rangers. Kennedy hit the open market this offseason when the Arizona Diamondbacks declined his $4 million option for the 2023 season. The 38-year-old reliever struggled in the desert last year with a 5.36 ERA (5.58 FIP), 1.57 WHIP, 10 saves and weak 19.0 percent strikeout rate in 50 1/3 relief innings over 57 appearances out of the bullpen. The 16-year veteran was with the Rangers for 32 appearances in 2021 and pitched well with a 2.51 ERA (3.66 FIP), 1.05 WHIP and 16 saves, but it would be a surprise if he gets many save chances this year with Texas with Jose Leclerc locked in as the primary closer.

Tue Nov 8 202217:40Diamondbacks Decline Ian Kennedy's Option
The Arizona Diamondbacks declined relief pitcher Ian Kennedy's $4 million mutual option for the 2023 season on Tuesday, making him a free agent. It's kind of a no-brainer move on Arizona's part. Kennedy did have 10 saves, but he also had a rough 5.36 ERA (5.58 FIP), a 1.57 WHIP, 44 strikeouts and 22 walks in 50 1/3 innings over his 57 appearances for the Snakes. The soon-to-be 38-year-old right-hander probably isn't going to attract a ton of interest on the open market and may have to take a minor league deal with an invite to spring training with another team if he wants to continue his MLB career in 2023.

Wed Sep 7 202211:41Ian Kennedy Blows Save Against Padres
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Ian Kennedy blew another save chance in the 6-5 loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. Kennedy allowed two earned runs on two hits while walking two and striking out none in two-thirds of an inning to blow his sixth save of the season. It was also the 37-year-old right-handed veteran's second straight blown save. He hasn't been good since taking over for demoted closer Mark Melancon, so perhaps the D-backs will make another change with the regular season coming to a close soon. Overall, Kennedy has a 3.60 ERA (4.62 FIP), a 1.36 WHIP, 10 saves and 40 strikeouts in 45 relief innings for Arizona. Don't be surprised if either Joe Mantiply or Melancon get the next crack at a save opportunity.

Tue Aug 9 202200:29Ian Kennedy Earns Seventh Save Of Season Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Ian Kennedy picked up his seventh save of the season in Monday's 3-0 win over the Pirates. Kennedy came in to close things out in the ninth with a three-run lead. He struck the first hitter out, allowed a walk, and then got the final two hitters out on flyouts. The veteran is now in the mix for save opportunities with Mark Melancon being demoted as the team's full-time closer. Kennedy has served as a closer before in his career and has now converted seven of 10 save opportunities with a 3.13 ERA. His fantasy value, while higher now is still unknown, but he is currently rostered in just 13 percent of leagues. As such, he is worth a look in deeper roto leagues for fantasy managers in need of saves.

Wed Aug 3 202200:43Ian Kennedy Earns Fifth Save Of Season Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Ian Kennedy picked up his fifth save of the season in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Guardians. Kennedy came in to pitch the ninth inning with a 3-run lead and struck out the side to end the game. Mark Melancon has served as the team's primary closer this season, but he pitched 1 2/3 innings in Monday's game. Kennedy has pitched better than Melancon but has had his own struggles, converting only five of eight save opportunities with a 3.15 ERA. Kennedy is worth a look in deeper roto leagues, but it seems that Melancon is still the arm to roster in fantasy for managers chasing saves at this time.

Mon Jul 18 202221:50Ian Kennedy Expected To Be Activated Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Ian Kennedy (leg) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Kennedy has been out of action since July 3 with a blood clot in his leg but he made an appearance at the rookie-level Arizona complex over the weekend, allowing three runs over one inning of work. Kennedy has a 3-4 record, 3.58 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, four saves, nine holds, and 25 strikeouts over 27 2/3 innings of work on the year. Look for him to head back to a setup role in the Arizona bullpen following the All-Star break.

Mon Jul 4 202218:41Ian Kennedy Lands On Injured List With Calf Inflammation
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed relief pitcher Ian Kennedy (calf) on the 15-day injured list with right calf inflammation on Monday. Fellow right-hander Keynan Middleton was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Kennedy has been the team's "closer-in-waiting" this year as the next man up behind the team's primary closer, Mark Melancon. Melancon leads the team with 11 saves while Kennedy is next after him with four. This injury makes Melancon's ninth inning job all the more secure despite his 5.47 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. Kennedy hasn't pitched a ton better this year with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP, but he'll still be someone worth keeping on your radar once he returns as he'll likely be a Melancon injury away from taking over ninth inning duties.

Thu Jun 9 202216:26Ian Kennedy Locks Down His Fourth Save Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Ian Kennedy converted the save in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He pitched the ninth inning and allowed a solo home run to Reds second baseman Matt Reynolds, but that was all the damage that was done. Kennedy is now 4-for-6 in save opportunities this year with a 3.57 ERA. The team's primary closer, Mark Melancon, was utilized in the eighth inning on Thursday. It wasn't a typical setup situation, ,though, as the Diamondbacks were trailing 3-1 going into the eighth. Melancon blew his last save opportunity and has an ugly 6.52 ERA on the year. Kennedy is a solid speculative add for future saves, as Melancon's job could be in jeopardy.

Tue May 3 202200:22Ian Kennedy Notches Second Save Of Season Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Ian Kennedy picked up his second save of the season in Monday's 5-4 win over the Marlins. The veteran entered to pitch the ninth inning up a run. He got the first out on a flyout, allowed a single, got another flyout, allowed a walk, and got the final out on a pop-out. Kennedy has earned both of his saves since Mark Melancon was placed on the COVID-19 injured list last Friday. Melancon will return to the closer's role once he returns, and Kennedy hasn't pitched all that well this season, posting a 4.09 ERA with eight strikeouts and seven walks over 11 innings pitched. All of this limits Kennedy's fantasy value, even in deeper roto leagues.

Sun May 1 202200:31Ian Kennedy Picks Up Save For D’backs
Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Ian Kennedy picked up the save on Saturday to close out his team's 2-0 win over the Cardinals. The veteran right-hander issued a leadoff walk to begin the ninth frame, but was able to generate outs against the next three hitters to seal the game for his first save of 2022. Since Mark Melancon was placed on the COVID-19 IL on Friday, it was Kennedy who received the call from the pen since he's the most experienced of the bunch with 56 career saves, including picking up 26 a year ago. Melancon will return to the closer's role once he's back to full health, but managers in deeper leagues should keep an eye on Kennedy in case Melancon were ever to miss significant time this season.

Mon Mar 14 202211:06Ian Kennedy Agrees With Diamondbacks
Free-agent relief pitcher Ian Kennedy agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, pending a physical, according to sources. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal later announced the deal was worth $4.75 million. Kennedy previously pitched for Arizona from 2010-13. He began his career as a starting pitcher and has made 290 starts in his 15-year career, but he spent the 2021 season with the Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies, with all 55 of his outings coming in relief (56 1/3 innings). The right-hander converted 26 of his 30 save chances along with a 3.20 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. Back in Arizona, Kennedy will likely operate in a setup role in front of closer Mark Melancon, limiting his fantasy appeal to deep holds leagues.

Sat Sep 18 202111:21Ian Kennedy Grabs Four-Out Save Against Mets On Friday
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Ian Kennedy retired all four batters he faced on Friday night to earn his 23rd save of the season. Kennedy was summoned in the eighth inning and struck out James McCann, who represented the go-ahead run. Kennedy was sent back out for the ninth and retired the side in order. Drama-free outings haven't been normal for Kennedy who has pitched to a 5.82 ERA since being acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline. There was speculation Hector Neris (1.42 ERA since August 1) could find himself back in the closer role, but this game should ensure Kennedy keeps the job for now. Fantasy managers desperate for saves can deploy Kennedy as a low-end RP option, but Neris does have appeal in deeper leagues.

Thu Sep 16 202110:34Ian Kennedy Blows Save, Earns Win Wednesday Versus Cubs
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Ian Kennedy allowed a solo home run to Matt Duffy to suffer his third blown save since being acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline. Fortunately for the Phillies and fantasy managers, Kennedy was able to escape the inning with no further damage and he earned the victory when Philly walked off in the bottom of the ninth. That's where the positives end for Kennedy, however, as he's pitched to a 6.32 ERA across 15 2/3 innings with the Phillies as patience is running thin in the city of brotherly love. Hector Neris and Jose Alvarado have both pitched better of late and it wouldn't be surprising to see one of them get the next save chance.

Fri Sep 10 202110:48Ian Kennedy Serves Up Two Homers In Blown Save Versus Rockies
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Ian Kennedy allowed three runs in 2/3 of an inning to take the loss on Thursday versus Colorado. Kennedy was one strike away from ending the game, but he served up a two-run homer to Ryan McMahon. To make matters worse, he would also allow a solo shot to Sam Hilliard before being lifted from the game. Manager Joe Girardi has been patient with Kennedy thus far, but Kennedy has posted a 6.59 ERA across 13 2/3 innings since joining the Phillies at the trade deadline. He's 6-for-8 in save chances with Philly but patience is running thin as the Phillies battle for a playoff spot. Fantasy managers should hold Kennedy for now, but we could see Hector Neris or Jose Alvarado get another look in the ninth inning if Kennedy continues to struggle.

Thu Sep 2 202118:53Ian Kennedy Nails Down Save No. 22 Thursday At Washington
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Ian Kennedy pitched around a one-out single to collect his 22nd save of the season Thursday afternoon at the Nationals. It was a nice bounce-back effort by the veteran reliever after he suffered a blown save in his previous outing. Kennedy hasn't been great for the Phillies as he has a 5.73 ERA since being acquired at the trade deadline. Most of that damage has come in non-save situations, however, as Kennedy is 6-for-7 in save chances for the Phillies as he seems to have a strong grip on the closer role in Philadelphia. He won't post gaudy strikeout totals or elite ratios, but Kennedy needs to be rostered in any fantasy league that rewards saves.

Sat Aug 28 202110:23Ian Kennedy Blows Second Save With Phillies
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Ian Kennedy allowed a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to suffer his second blown save since he was acquired from the Rangers at the trade deadline. Kennedy was called on to protect a two-run lead versus Arizona, but immediately served up a single to Pavin Smith, then a homer to Christian Walker, and the game was tied. Kennedy was able to escape the inning without further harm, but it was another rough night for the beleaguered Phillie bullpen. Despite the blown save, Philadelphia doesn't have an obvious option to handle closer duties, so Kennedy should still be rostered in fantasy as his job is likely safe for now.

Sat Aug 21 202110:45Ian Kennedy Slams Door On Padres For Save No. 20
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Ian Kennedy pitched 1 1/3 innings on Friday at San Diego to pick up his 20th save of the season. Kennedy was summoned into a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and proceeded to hit Fernando Tatis Jr. to force in a run. The right-hander then whiffed Manny Machado to escape the inning with a one-run lead, which he would protect without issue in the bottom of the ninth. Kennedy got off to a rough start after being shipped from Texas to Philly at the trade deadline, but he's now tossed four straight scoreless outings and is yet to suffer a blown save with his new club. Kennedy should be rostered in all fantasy leagues where saves are rewarded.
