Less than a week after retiring from the NBA, Amar'e Stoudemire announced Monday he is continuing his basketball career in Israel.In a post on the Player's Tribune website, Stoudemire wrote: "I may be retiring from the NBA, but I'm not saying goodbye to basketball just yet. My next step is playing for Hapoel Jerusalem, one of the top teams in Europe. This isn't about collecting a paycheck overseas though; it's a spiritual journey, too."Stoudemire said at a press conference Monday in New York that he will sign a two-year deal with Hapoel Jerusalem, the team he co-owns. F/C Amar'e Stoudemire was given the start at center Wednesday in the Heat's 99-91 loss to the Raptors for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinal when C Hassan Whiteside (sprained right MCL) stayed in Miami to receive rest and treatment. Stoudemire lasted three minutes and 10 seconds into the game before he was replaced by F Josh McRoberts with the Raptors leading 9-0. Stoudemire never returned, finishing with no points and one rebound. With Whiteside also sidelined for Game 4, Stoudemire played 12:24 in a Heat win, contributing six points and three rebounds despite being a minus-6.

C Amar'e Stoudemire, a six-time NBA All-Star whose career has slowed to a crawl due to injuries, was a healthy scratch 27 times for Miami this season. However, when starting C Hassan Whiteside got hurt, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra turned to the well-rested, 33-year-old reserve.On Sunday night, Stoudemire came through again, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to help the Heat defeat the Atlanta Hawks 105-87 at AmericanAirlines Arena. The Heat are 4-1 with Stoudemire as a starter, including their current four-game win streak. "He had moments like this the past couple of years," Spoelstra said. "We fully believe Amar'e can be who he was in his 20s in short bursts if we are all smart about it and control his minutes."

Knee issues have been a familiar refrain for Stoudemire throughout his career, but this setback isn't likely to be a particularly troublesome one. It appears the Heat are resting Stoudemire mainly for precautionary purposes, as they aim to preserve his body for the rigors of the regular season. He's set to work as the backup center behind Hassan Whiteside in 2015-16 and play about 15-to-25 minutes per night.

While he may not be the All-Star-caliber player he once was back when he played with Phoenix, Stoudemire can still serve as a suitable veteran forward off the bench. In 23 games with Dallas last season where he almost exclusively came off the bench, Stoudemire averaged 10.8 points on 58 percent shooting and 3.7 rebounds in just over 16 minutes per game. Seeing as though Miami already has a formidable starting frontcourt in place of Chris Bosh and Hassan Whiteside, Stoudemire will likely have a similar role and similar production next season.

Stoudemire ended the season averaging 11.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in 59 games between Dallas and New York. He appeared in all five of the Mavericks' postseason games but was unable to help the team advance to the second round.

Stoudemire appeared to settle into a comfortable role off the Dallas bench, averaging 10.8 points per game despite receiving eight fewer minutes than he did with the Knicks. He remains a valuable weapon on the offensive end and could be a nice bench option wherever he ends up this offseason. He may not be the All-Star he once was but his efficient scoring could make him a nice reserve option for fantasy owners in the 2015-16 season.
