Sun Apr 26 201514:08Roberts signed minor-league contract with Athletics on Sunday
Roberts signed a minor-league contract with the Athletics on Sunday. He will report to Triple-A Nashville and bat fifth for them in Sunday's game.
The Athletics were forced to plunder from their Triple-A ranks with utility man Ben Zobrist landing on the disabled list following knee surgery, so Roberts will give the organization a little more depth in the infield. It wouldn't be surprising if Roberts received a call-up at some point in the near future once he gets some at-bats under his belt with Nashville, but the Athletics probably aren't viewing him as an eventual everyday lineup solution at second or third base.

Evidently, Roberts saw the writing on the wall as far as his chances of making the Opening Day roster, and asked that he be allowed to seek an opportunity elsewhere. The 34-year-old went 7-for-32 (.219 average) with two walks and 11 strikeouts in 18 spring games.

Tue Apr 8 201421:36Roberts gets on base twice in Red Sox debut
Ryan Roberts went 0-for-2 with two walks in his Red Sox debut in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers.
The Red Sox brought Roberts on board on Monday to fill in for the injured Will Middlebrooks. Roberts handles the strike zone well, but doesn't hit for average and doesn't hit for enough power to make up for it. Leagues with on-base percentage are obviously a much better fit for Roberts, but he does swipe the occasional base, making him worth a consideration in deeper leagues. He may only have a few weeks' worth of value, however, assuming Middlebrooks returns by the end of April or early May.

Roberts gives Boston depth at third base while Will Middlebrooks nurses a calf strain. Roberts was released by the Cubs at the end of spring training and is not a good fantasy bet, even if he works his way into regular playing time. The 33-year-old is a .245/.321/.392 career hitter in 510 major league games.

Cubs signed INF Ryan Roberts to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
It's a good landing spot for him, as the Cubs don't really have much at second or third base. Roberts batted just .247/.295/.377 with five homers and 17 RBI in 162 at-bats for the Rays in 2013, but he's versatile and won't have trouble cracking the Opening Day roster.

Ryan Roberts has elected free agency.
The 33-year-old utility player had a very disappointing 2013 season, slashing .247/.295/.377 with five homers and 17 RBI in just 162 at-bats. With his versatility, he shouldn't have a problem finding a team willing to let him compete for a reserve role, though his usefulness in mixed leagues is minimal.
