Sat Aug 7 202104:52Gerardo Parra Swipes First Bag
Washington Nationals outfielder Gerardo Parra swiped his first bag of the season Friday. He started in right field and batted eighth, going 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and a run scored in the 8-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Parra hasn't seen much playing time since being called back up to the majors in June, and though at-bats have opened up in the wake of the trade deadline sell-off, plenty of those opportunities will go to younger players. With just two homers and now one steal in his 81 at-bats, Parra's days as a useful fantasy piece are all but over.

HOUSTON (AP) — Nestor Cortes and three relievers combined for a three-hitter and Brett Gardner and DJ LeMahieu each drove in two runs to lead the New York Yankees over the Houston Astros 4-0 on Friday night. Making a spot start, Cortes permitted two hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking two and lowering his ERA to 1.05. Lucas Luetge (3-1) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings for the win. Chad Green gave up one hit in two innings and Jonathan Loaisiga threw a perfect ninth. It was New York’s first visit to Houston since Game 6 of the 2019 AL Championship Series. The Astros advanced to the World Series with a 6-4 win in that game on a two-run homer by Jose Altuve with two outs in the ninth. Sat Jul 3 202118:07Nats' hot-hitting Schwarber out with hamstring strain
WASHINGTON (AP) — Kyle Schwarber limped into the Washington Nationals' dugout on Saturday with a heavy wrap poking out of the right side of his shorts. Schwarber was in shower shoes and trying to be upbeat when meeting with reporters after being placed on the 10-day injured list because of a right hamstring strain. There is no timetable for his return. “It’s not the best, but not the worst,” Schwarber said. “Just got to take it for what it is.” He was among the hottest hitters in the majors, bashing 16 home runs in June, seven of them leading off games. All were critical for the Nationals, who went 19-9 in the month to turn their season around. Schwarber said he does not need a procedure to repair damage to his hamstring. Instead, he will use compression treatment to reduce swelling. Rest and strengthening exercises will follow. He has not had a hamstring injury previously. Schwarber tore two ligaments in his left knee in 2016. But a furious recovery pace allowed him to rejoin the Chicago... [More]
Fri Jul 2 202123:17Nats slugger Schwarber exits early with hamstring injury
WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals star Kyle Schwarber exited early with a hamstring injury Friday night, and it was uncertain when the streaking slugger would return to the lineup. Schwarber, who hit a franchise-record 16 home runs in June, was removed in the second inning of a 10-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Schwarber singled to the right-center field gap and grimaced while rounding first. He made a hard stop as Cody Bellinger cut off the line drive and reached for his right hamstring after he returned to first base. An MRI was set for Saturday. “When you see a guy grab his leg like that, you’ve got to get him out of the game,” manager Dave Martinez said. “You hope he can come out of it and be OK," he said. Martinez and a team trainer came to check on Schwarber, who immediately walked off the field. Schwarber yanked off his batting gloves and threw them as he limped through the dugout. The left fielder hit seven leadoff home runs in June as he helped the Nationals turn their... [More]
Fri Jul 2 202120:37Nats slugger Schwarber leaves in 2nd inning with leg injury
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Nationals lost baseball's hottest slugger to an apparent right leg injury when Kyle Schwarber was removed in the second inning of Washington's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. Schwarber singled to the right-center field gap and grimaced while rounding first. He made a hard stop as Cody Bellinger cut off the line drive and reached for his right hamstring after he returned to first base. Manager Dave Martinez and a team trainer came to check on Schwarber, who immediately walked off the field. Schwarber yanked off his batting gloves and threw them as he limped through the dugout. The left fielder set a franchise record with 16 homers in June — seven of them leading off a game — as he helped the Nationals turn their season around and climb back into the NL East race. He became the third player in major league history to hit 16 homers in 18 games, and only Sammy Sosa (20 in 1998) has hit more homers in June. Earlier Friday, Schwarber was named NL Player of the Month. Gerardo Parra replaced Schwarber for a Nationals team that's been beset by injuries. Trea Turner has missed the past two games with a finger injury, and the team is also without starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg, among several others. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Sun Jun 20 202115:18'Baby Shark' Gerardo Parra back with Washington Nationals
WASHINGTON (AP) — The “Baby Shark” is back with the Washington Nationals. Washington selected the contract of outfielder Gerardo Parra from Triple-A Rochester on Sunday, bringing back the player whose walkup music of the children's song became a theme of the Nationals' run to the 2019 World Series title. Parra, a two-time Gold Glove winner, signed with Washington in May 2019 and hit .250 with eight homers and 42 RBIs, then spent last season with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League. The 34-year-old was batting .222 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 21 games at Rochester. “It's good to have him back,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “I told him for today be ready to pinch hit when needed and be ready to play anywhere in the outfield.” Parra entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning against the New York Mets and doubled, then scored on Kyle Schwarber's third home run of the game. Parra is an 11-year major league veteran with a .276 average, 88 homers and 522 RBIs for Arizona (2009-14), Milwaukee (2014-15), Baltimore (2015), Colorado (2016-18), San Francisco (2019) and Washington. Andrew Stevenson, Washington's fourth outfielder, was put on the 10-day injured list Friday because of a strained oblique muscle. Washington optioned infielder Luis García to Rochester and designated left-hander Ben Braymer for assignment. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat Mar 27 202117:54Nationals send projected starting 3B Kieboom to minors
Carter Kieboom, a first-round draft pick and the expected starting third baseman for the Washington Nationals, was sent to the minor leagues on Saturday. Drafted in 2016, Kieboom has struggled at the plate in limited opportunities in the majors, batting .181 in 44 games over two seasons with Washington. Kieboom and Starlin Castro had been getting time at third in preseason camp. Also optioned to Triple-A Rochester were INF Luis Garcia, LHP Sam Clay, RHP Kyle McGowin and OF Yadiel Hernández. Surprising additions to the team’s major league roster were INF Jordy Mercer and INF/OF Hernán Pérez. Mercer has a split contract: $1,000,000 while he’s in the majors and $150,000 in the minors, plus $50,000 each for 100, 150, 200, and 250 plate appearances, and $100,000 each for 300 and 400 plate appearances. Re-assigned to minor league camp were RHP Aaron Barrett, RHP Paolo Espino, RHP Javy Guerra, RHP Todd Peterson, C Welington Castillo, C Brandon Snyder, C Blake Swihart, INF Adrían Sanchez, OF Gerardo Parra and OF Carlos Tocci. The Nationals also released Yasmany Tomás and T.J. McFarland from their minor league contracts and first baseman Jake Noll was designated for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Thu Mar 25 202121:54Nats OF Juan Soto leaves game early with right calf cramp
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Reigning NL batting champion Juan Soto left Washington’s 7-3 exhibition loss against the Miami Marlins in the middle of the first inning Thursday with what manager Dave Martinez said was a cramp in his right calf. “I didn’t want to take any chances,” Martinez said. The Nationals slugger drew an 11-pitch walk from Sixto Sánchez with one out in the top of the first. Soto stayed in to run while the next two batters were retired. He then was replaced in right field in the bottom half of the inning by Gerardo Parra. “Said he didn’t feel it ’til he got to first base. He thought it went away, but when he came back to the dugout, he said it was bothering him, so we took him out,” Martinez said. “We’ll re-evaluate tomorrow. He said he felt fine, but I want to make sure that he gets treatment when we see him tomorrow.” The 22-year-old Soto batted .351 last season, with 13 homers, 37 RBIs and a 1.185 OPS in 47 games during the pandemic-shortened season. Opening day of the 2021 baseball season is a week away; Washington hosts the New York Mets at night on April 1. “We’ve still got some days left. We can do some different things to keep them ready as far as the swing and things of that nature,” Martinez said. “But we want to make sure this doesn’t become a bigger issue.” ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Feb 3 202119:45Nationals add backup catcher Avila on $1.5M, 1-year deal
WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Avila finalized a $1.5 million, one-year contract Wednesday with the Washington Nationals, who are expected to use him as the primary backup to starting catcher Yan Gomes. Avila, who turned 34 last week, was a free agent after playing in 2020 for the Minnesota Twins, batting .184 in 49 at-bats during the coronavirus-shortened season. His deal calls for a $500,000 signing bonus that is protected against a shortened season and a $1 million guaranteed salary. While he hasn't had any detailed discussions about his role with manager Dave Martinez or GM Mike Rizzo, Avila said: "Whenever Davey needs me in the lineup, I’ll be ready to go.” He has played 12 years in the majors for five clubs and has a .235 career batting average with a .348 on-base percentage, 104 homers and 388 RBIs. “I don't think I'm going to be hitting fourth for this team,” joked Avila, who has thrown out 14 of 32 runners trying to steal over the past two seasons.
