Sun Jun 28 202020:51Franco one of several top prospects picked for player pools
Top prospect Wander Franco is part of the Tampa Bay Rays' 60-man player pool, and the Detroit Tigers are including their most heralded young pitchers as baseball gears up for its abbreviated season.Sunday was the deadline for teams to submit player pools, although additions can be made later. Many teams announced pools well below the 60-player limit.Franco, a 19-year-old shortstop, is ranked as the No. 1 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. He spent last season at Class A, so it would be quite a jump for him to contribute in the majors in the immediate future, but putting him in the player pool makes him an option for the Rays — and could help his development in a year when the coronavirus shut down the minor leagues.Pitcher Brendan McKay and infielder Vidal Brujan, two other top Tampa Bay prospects, also made the pool.“They are some of our more advanced prospects," Rays general manager Erik Neander said. “Certainly on the position player side that’s where things went and why Wander was... Wed Oct 3 201821:42Orioles fire Showalter, Duquette after dismal 47-115 season
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles will continue their rebuilding project without manager Buck Showalter and executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette, who were fired Wednesday after the team finished with the worst record in the major leagues. With Duquette procuring the talent and Showalter making it work on the field, Baltimore snapped a run of 14 straight losing seasons and made the playoffs in 2012, 2014 and 2016.But the Orioles finished 75-87 in 2017 — losing 19 of their final 23 games — and this year staggered through a 47-115 season, the worst since the team moved to Baltimore in 1954.The club issued a statement Wednesday night that read, in part: "We thank Dan and Buck for their many contributions over the past several years. Under their leadership, prior to the 2018 season and for six consecutive years, the club delivered competitive teams playing meaningful baseball into September. ... BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have fired executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette, who launched a belated rebuilding effort in July after the team failed miserably from the start. The announcement came Wednesday night, hours after manager Buck Showalter was told by the club he would not return in 2019.Baltimore went 47-115, the worst record in Orioles' history. Both Duquette and Showalter had contracts that expired at the end of this season.Duquette joined the Orioles in November 2011 and put together a team that ended a franchise-record run of 14 straight losing seasons by reaching the playoffs in 2012. Tue Oct 2 201802:10Elevating Rockies' game? Coors seems to factor in awards
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies would like to air a little grievance: They're thin on MVP winners in their history. Even lighter on Cy Young candidates. They wouldn't mind a little altitude adjustment when it comes to conventional thinking at Coors Field. As it stands, sometimes they feel like hitters get penalized for hitting at higher elevation half the time and the pitchers don't get rewarded highly enough. It's a scale that doesn't seem balanced."Hopefully, that will start to go away a little bit more," Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday said. "Because there are lots of good hitting parks around the league. For people to just single out Coors Field and write it off is unfair."The Rockies have had 11 batting champions in their past and one MVP winner — Larry Walker in 1997. They've had one pitcher finish in the top-three in the NL Cy Young race, Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010.Part of the reason may be this: "It's a challenge to evaluate the numbers in Denver," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler explained.And... RHP Ubaldo Jimenez made what might be his final start as an Oriole at Camden Yards on Friday night. His four-year contract ends following 2017, and Jimenez allowed a grand slam to C Wilson Ramos in the second inning en route to an 8-3 loss. Overall, Jimenez (6-11) gave up six runs on eight hits in just three innings. The big right-hander was repeatedly booed as he never found the consistency needed to pitch better. "What happened tonight? He had two pitches that were four runs," manager Buck Showalter said. "The 0-2 hit by pitch and the home run. A couple ground balls that trickled through and the next thing you know we're down 4-0."
