Mon Oct 1 201812:49After late-season surge, Cardinals optimistic this offseason
The St. Louis Cardinals were barreling toward their third consecutive missed postseason when they made the decision to part ways with manager Mike Matheny and turn the reins over to Mike Shildt. They still wound up missing the playoffs. But oh, what a run they made.A club that was hovering around .500 when Matheny was dumped in July set a record for consecutive series wins, and climbed into the playoff race well into September. St. Louis was finally eliminated on the season's penultimate day, but the organization was left feeling much better about the future."We've been in postseason mode since virtually the All-Star break," Shildt said, "so you appreciate what went well, and you appreciate and grow through experiences and you grow together. There's a lot of takeaways, and the good news is we'll take advantage of it. I can promise you that."Shildt, who never played the game beyond college, was so impressive in righting the course as a first-time manager that the Cardinals stripped him of... [More]
Sat Aug 4 201819:40Cards outfielder Fowler breaks foot, put on disabled list
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dexter Fowler's difficult season has taken another downturn as the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder has sustained a broken left foot and will wear a walking boot for one month.Fowler was put on the 10-day disabled list prior to Saturday night's game with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Second baseman Kolten Wong was activated from the 10-day DL.Fowler was examined by team doctors. He'll be reevaluated after a month in the boot. The 32-year-old Fowler was removed in the eighth inning of Friday night's 7-6 loss to the Pirates. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Fowler was injured earlier in the game when he fouled a ball off the foot.Fowler is hitting just .180 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 90 games. This is the second year of his $82.5-million, five-year contract."He was finding his feel at the plate, putting some good swings on the ball and getting the opportunity," Mozeliak said. "Sometimes things happen for a reason. Hopefully, this gets him to a spot where he can come back better next year, though we haven't ruled out seeing him again this year."Wong had been out since July 22 with left knee inflammation. He is hitting .216 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 91 games.

PLAYERS TO PICK UPJack Flaherty, SP, St. Louis (54 percent owned in Yahoo) - Thirteen strikeouts. One walk. One earned run. Those were the numbers from Flaherty's last outing. How is he owned in just over half of leagues? If Flaherty is available in your league, you need to open a new tab, add him and then return here to read the rest of this column. With an outstanding slider, Flaherty is dominating hitters each outing. He's given up a total of six earned runs in 23 1/3 innings this year. Despite the too-many-guys-but-not-enough-spots problem the Cardinals' rotation has right now, Captain Jack's spot is safe.Tyler O'Neill, OF, St. Louis (41 percent) - Speaking of young Cardinals making a difference, O'Neill had a stretch of three home runs in three games earlier this week. Dexter Fowler is lost at the plate, and Marcel Ozuna is failing to replicate his success from a season ago. As long as O'Neill hits, Mike Matheny will find room for him in the Cardinals' lineup. There's a lot of Aar... [More]
