Tue Jan 31 202314:18Dexter Fowler Announces Retirement
Outfielder Dexter Fowler announced on Tuesday he's retiring from the league in a tweet. Fowler appeared in 14 Major League seasons, playing for the Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels, and Houston Astros in his big league career. The 37-year-old's best year at the plate arguably came in 2016 when he won a World Series title with the Cubs. That year, the outfielder hit .276 with a .393 on-base percentage, 13 home runs, 13 stolen bases, 84 runs scored, 48 RBI, and a 129 wRC+ in 551 plate appearances. For his career, Fowler hit .259 with a 358 on-base percentage, a 19.5 fWAR, 127 home runs, and 149 stolen bases in 5,902 Major League plate appearances.

Tue May 3 202215:35Dexter Fowler Becomes Free Agent
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Dexter Fowler requested his release and is now a free agent, according to a source. Fowler signed a minor league deal with Toronto in late March after recovering from a torn ACL in his knee. The 36-year-old veteran did have five hits in 12 at-bats over three games for Triple-A Buffalo, but he'll now be looking to latch on with another team as he tries to work his way back to the majors. Fowler has appeared in only 38 major league games in the last two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels, and he's hit .236/.312/.364 with four home runs, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored in 122 plate appearances. He continues to be well off the fantasy radar at the tail end of his career.

Wed Mar 30 202210:30Blue Jays Expected To Sign Dexter Fowler
The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to sign free-agent outfielder Dexter Fowler to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training, according to a source. Fowler was limited to seven games last year with the Los Angeles Angels due to a torn ACL in his right knee that he suffered in mid-April. The 36-year-old veteran outfielder was an All-Star with the Chicago Cubs back in 2016, but he hit a combined .233/.334/.408 with 49 home runs, 177 RBI, 191 runs and 21 stolen bases in a four-year span from 2017-20 with the St. Louis Cardinals. In Toronto, he'll purely be veteran outfield depth on a stacked roster and won't have any fantasy appeal for now.

Wed Jul 14 202120:50Angels sign veteran OF Adam Eaton after White Sox release
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels signed veteran outfielder Adam Eaton two days after he was released by the Chicago White Sox. The Angels announced the move Wednesday. They also designated left-hander Dillon Peters for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. The White Sox designated Eaton for assignment July 7 after he batted .201 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 58 games during his return season with Chicago. After a strong start to the year, his production slumped badly from mid-April onward. The 10-year major league veteran also struggled at the plate with the Washington Nationals in 2020, a year after playing well and winning a World Series ring with new Angels teammate Anthony Rendon. Eaton is a career .278 hitter with 65 homers and 317 RBIs across a decade with Arizona, Washington and two stints with the White Sox. Eaton will provide immediate depth in the Angels' injury-plagued outfield. Left fielder Justin Upton has been out since June 22 with a lower back injury,... [More]

Thu May 6 202120:14Slumping slugger Pujols cut by Angels, still wants to play
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Albert Pujols was cut by the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, abruptly ending the 41-year-old superstar slugger's decade with his second major league team. The Angels surprisingly announced the move to designate Pujols for assignment one day after he wasn't in the lineup for the slumping club's fourth consecutive loss. The decision was made after Pujols, dissatisfied with irregular playing time, had a late-night meeting with general manager Perry Minasian and team president John Carpino. Pujols, who is batting .198 this season, is determined to play first base regularly for another team after he clears waivers, Angels manager Joe Maddon said. Pujols is fifth in major league history with 667 career homers and 13th with 3,253 hits. “He wants to play, and he wants to be in the field,” Maddon said. “Hopefully he’s going to get that opportunity somewhere else, and believe me, we’re all going to be rooting for him.” The three-time NL MVP for St. Louis was in the final season... ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Albert Pujols was cut by the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, abruptly ending the 41-year-old superstar slugger's decade with his second major league team. The Angels surprisingly announced the move to designate Pujols for assignment a day after he wasn't in their lineup for the slumping club's fourth consecutive loss. The three-time NL MVP for St. Louis was in the final season of a 10-year, $240 million contract with Los Angeles. Pujols is fifth in major league history with 667 career homers, and the first baseman is 13th in major league history with 3,253 hits. A 10-time All-Star and the oldest active player in the majors, he is batting .198 this season with five homers and 12 RBIs while playing in 24 of the Angels' 29 games. “The Angels organization proudly signed Albert Pujols in 2011, and are honored that he has worn an Angels jersey for nearly half of his Hall of Fame career," Angels owner Arte Moreno said in a statement. DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler has a torn ACL in his left knee that requires season-ending surgery. A date for the procedure has not been set. Recovery time is expected to be six to nine months. “Comeback season has commenced,” Fowler said Sunday. “The cards I've been dealt, so you've got to deal with them and go at it like that.” Fowler was hurt when he took an awkward step on second base in Friday night’s game against Toronto. At first he thought he was hit by a thrown ball. The Angels initially thought Fowler had avoided a serious injury but an MRI exam on Saturday found the tear. “The preliminary tests were fine,” Fowler said. “Thought the ACL and everything was fine, and then woke up the next morning and it was kind of sore. ... Went and got an MRI and the doc told me that I tore my ACL and my medial meniscus and strained my MCL.” Fowler doesn't think the injury is career-ending. “I want to continue to play,” the 35-year-old said. “I think I've still... Mon Apr 5 202100:58Ohtani's 2-way play, Walsh's walkoff HR lift Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit a 451-foot homer and pitched two-hit ball into the fifth inning in a historic two-way performance, and Jared Walsh hit a walkoff homer in the Los Angeles Angels’ 7-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday night. Walsh hit two homers, including a big three-run shot off Matt Foster to end the Angels’ third win over Chicago in their four-game, season-opening series. Ohtani reached another milestone in his unique career when he took the mound and occupied the No. 2 slot in the batting order for the Angels. He was just the third pitcher in 45 seasons to hit for himself in a game with the designated hitter available, and the first to bat second since Jack Dunleavy did it for the Cardinals in 1903. In the first inning alone, Ohtani both threw the hardest pitch by any starting pitcher in baseball this season and produced the hardest hit by any batter this season. Ohtani touched 101 mph with a fastball, and his first-pitch homer off Chicago’s Dylan... [More]
Fri Feb 26 202117:05Adell still confident after rough debut season with Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jo Adell tore through the Los Angeles Angels' minor league system with runaway momentum, and he cracked the big league roster last season just a few months after his 21st birthday. All that momentum faded during a debut campaign that turned out worse than almost anybody expected for the Halos' most prized prospect: a .161 average with just three homers, seven RBIs, a whopping 55 strikeouts, a .478 OPS and several fielding misadventures in 38 games. Although Adell is back in spring training with the Angels in Arizona, he knows he might not be headed back to Anaheim when it's over. With Triple-A baseball back in business, Adell could be headed to the minors to pick up the seasoning he probably needed before his rushed 2020 debut. Los Angeles already acquired veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler to fill Adell's everyday spot in right field. The prospect of a step back doesn't appear to bother Adell, however. After an offseason of hard work on his physical conditioning and... [More]

Tue Feb 9 202114:37LA Angels sign utilityman Phil Gosselin, OF Juan Lagares
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have signed outfielder Juan Lagares and utilityman Phil Gosselin to minor league deals with invitations to spring training. Lagares spent most of the past eight seasons with the New York Mets, batting .254 with 25 homers and 179 RBIs. He appeared in just 165 games over the past three seasons in New York, and he didn't record a plate appearance in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season before being designated for assignment in August. Lagares won a Gold Glove in 2014, and he remains a strong fielder who can play all three outfield spots. He made the all-tournament team this month in the Caribbean Series while playing for his native Dominican Republic's Águilas Cibaeñas. Lagares is expected to compete with Taylor Ward, Scott Schebler, Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh for a job as a backup outfielder with the Angels. Justin Upton, Mike Trout and Dexter Fowler are likely to comprise the Halos' starting outfield. Gosselin is joining his seventh major league organization after spending the past two seasons in Philadelphia. He is a career .261 hitter who has played every position except catcher and center field, with his most extensive playing time at second base. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Thu Feb 4 202123:35LA Angels acquire veteran OF Dexter Fowler from Cardinals
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler from the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night for cash or a player to be named later. Fowler batted .233 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 23 games last season, his fourth with St. Louis. The switch-hitting former Rockies and Cubs slugger is a career .259 hitter with 127 homers and 561 RBIs. Fowler, who turns 35 next month, can play all three outfield positions. Although Fowler’s production has declined in recent years, the Angels see the veteran as an important leader for their clubhouse and a short-term solution in right field so they can give more minor league development time to Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh. “He’s an outstanding human being, and he’s a high-energy player,” Angels general manager Perry Minasian said. “Over a 162-game season, energy is important, and this guy brings that smile, that energy on a daily basis. And we still think he can play. We think there’s a lot left in the tank. The homework... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have acquired veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler from the St. Louis Cardinals for cash or a player to be named later. The clubs announced the deal Thursday night. Fowler batted .233 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 23 games last season, his fourth with St. Louis. The switch-hitting former Rockies and Cubs slugger is a career .259 hitter with 127 homers and 561 RBIs. While the 35-year-old Fowler can play all three outfield positions, he likely is a short-term solution in right field for the Angels, who have said they would prefer to give more minor league development time to Jo Adell and Brandon Marsh. The 21-year-old Adell, the Halos’ top prospect, struggled in his major league debut last season as their everyday right fielder, batting .161 with a .478 OPS over 38 games. Mon Sep 21 202018:43Cardinals activate Fowler, Gallegos from injured list for KC
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals activated outfielder Dexter Fowler and right-hander Giovanny Gallegos from the injured list in a series of roster moves before starting their three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Monday night. The Cardinals also optioned outfielder Justin Williams and right-hander Nabil Crismatt to their alternate training site and designated right-hander Roel Ramirez for assignment. Fowler was tied for the team lead with four homers and had 18 RBIs when he was placed on the injured list Sept. 2 to deal with a stomach ailment. The three-week shutdown allowed him to complete a medication regimen that would have made him more vulnerable to the coronavirus should he become exposed. Gallegos missed the minimum 10 days with a groin injury. He is 4 for 4 in save opportunities with a 3.97 ERA, and he is likely to share closing duties with Andrew Miller, who has been holding down the ninth inning in his absence. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
