Sun Feb 1713:42Madison Bumgarner says he was joking over opener refusal
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Madison Bumgarner was joking when he told manager Bruce Bochy he absolutely refuses to pitch behind an opener. It won't happen anyway.San Francisco's ace lefty is hardly a likely candidate to follow someone else to the mound who works the first inning."If you use an opener in my game, I'm walking right out of the ballpark," Bumgarner wrote in a text to Bochy after new team president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said in December the Giants were open to the idea.Bochy recalled the message this month during Fan Fest."Everybody in this clubhouse knows what kind of teammate I am," Bumgarner said. "Some people may have forgotten that. Not in here. Outside, according to all this being talked about right now with that junk. It's OK. All I care about is the guys in here, and that's it. When it comes to the stuff on the field, I think they all know what kind of teammate I am."Cubs manager Joe Maddon is curious to see how many clubs employ an opener strategy, one ... [More]
Thu Feb 1418:11Cueto pitched with severe pain in elbow nearly 3 years
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — For nearly three years, Johnny Cueto pitched with a stabbing pain in his right elbow. He won 18 games for San Francisco in 2016 and started the All-Star game that year dealing with the discomfort. How he did so, Cueto isn't sure. And the animated right-hander can now envision how great it will be once he's back on the mound and pain-free following Tommy John reconstructive surgery."It was a lot for me to deal with. It was almost three years with pain in the elbow, and strong pain," said Cueto, who turns 33 on Friday. "It's not easy. Last year I started well, but it's a mental pain, it's a pain that felt like someone stuck a knife in my elbow and stabbed it over and over again. It was unbearable and I don't know how I was able to pitch and block the pain."Cueto arrived in Arizona a couple of days behind the Giants pitchers and catchers because of personal reasons and had his physical Thursday. He is scheduled to throw next week for the first time since his Augu... [More]
Wed Feb 1319:30Bumgarner puts rookie Joey Bart to work on Giants' 1st day
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — When catching prospect Joey Bart arrived in the San Francisco Giants' camp, he wanted to get over any nervousness about being around veterans such as Madison Bumgarner, so he made a point of introducing himself to the pitcher. The second overall pick in last year's amateur draft had no idea he'd be catching Bumgarner's first bullpen session Wednesday."I was walking in to catch and he was like, 'Let's go on No. 1,'" Bart said. "I was like, 'All right, here we go.'"Bumgarner hopes to bounce back from a disappointing 2018. The left-hander didn't make his season debut until June 5 after breaking the pinkie of his pitching hand when hit by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City's Whit Merrifield late in spring training. Bumgarner went 6-7 with a 3.26 ERA in 21 starts."You can tell he came in ready," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It was a really good bullpen for him. It's good for the kid to catch him, too. First bullpen and he's catching your No. 1 guy. That's... [More]

Tue Feb 1216:40Bumgarner, Posey would love to see Harper join Giants
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey would love to see Bryce Harper join them in the San Francisco Giants clubhouse."I think it'd be a huge addition for us," Bumgarner said Tuesday as the Giants opened spring training. "He's obviously a superstar in the game, a young player. I think everybody in here would be pretty damn excited to have him."Harper and the Giants met in the free agent slugger's hometown of Las Vegas last week, and new San Francisco baseball operations chief Farhan Zaidi said the sides had mutual interest."I think anybody who plays Major League Baseball would love to have him on their team and that's no exception here," Posey said. "The type of player he brings and the passion he brings to the game, if we were lucky enough for it to work out, it'd be great."What is he, 26? He's won an MVP," Posey said. In that regard, this just felt like a great fit for me."Pomeranz pitched the past three years with Boston. He won a career-high 17 games for the Red Sox in 2017. But he went 2-6 with... [More]

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Left-hander Derek Holland is staying with the San Francisco Giants, agreeing to a one-year contract that guarantees $7 million. With all the injuries to the rotation last season, keeping the versatile Holland provides a big boost to the pitching staff."For me, it was just an easy decision to come back after everything these guys helped me basically as I looked at it as resurrecting my career," Holland said.Holland has a $6.5 million salary this season as part of the deal announced Monday, and the Giants have a $7 million option for 2020 with a $500,000 buyout. Tue Nov 6 201823:12Teams, agents wonder whether slow market will repeat
CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — Agent John Boggs stood in the lobby at the hotel hosting the general managers' meetings and talked about last winter, when dozens of free agents remained unsigned after spring training began, causing prices to plummet as opening day approached."It's the greatest thing for the owners because they've got a lot of players that are wanting to play and have a lot of game left in them, and all of a sudden are just sitting there dying to get an opportunity again, and so it's a gigantic Macy's basement sale," he said. "I hope it is an aberration because I think there's a lot of good players that are being deprived of getting an opportunity to continue their careers."As the offseason starts, teams and agents aren't sure whether the market will revert to its previous pace or whether clubs will try to wait out players again.Miami's efforts to trade Giancarlo Stanton and Shohei Ohtani's decision to leave Japan for the major leagues created roadblocks after the 2017 season... Mon Oct 1 201812:50Giants finish 5-21 September for another losing season
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The way the last two seasons have gone for the San Francisco Giants, those three World Series titles in 2010, '12 and '14 seem so long ago for manager Bruce Bochy's club. The Giants finished 73-89 following a season during which the biggest names — Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey, Johnny Cueto, Brandon Belt — were all injured at some point. They traded Andrew McCutchen to the Yankees in late August amid all the disabled list stints.San Francisco struggled to score runs and went a majors-worst 5-21 in September but improved on its last-place 2017 finish of 64-98 by nine wins during a second straight season in which pitchers Bumgarner and Cueto were sidelined for long stretches, and reliable right-hander Jeff Samardzija got hurt, too.Cueto had Tommy John surgery in August, Posey underwent season-ending hip surgery later that month then first baseman Belt underwent season-ending right knee surgery in September."We've been one of those lineups that needed all hand...
