Tue Jul 12 2011 | 22:29 | Bengie Molina won't play this season |
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Bengie Molina will not play for anyone in 2011. |
No surprise there. Molina is saying he's still not officially retired, but it was unlikely we would see him play for anyone this season and it seems like a longshot the soon-to-be 37-year-old will ever suit up in a major league uniform again. |

Sat Mar 19 2011 | 13:37 | Brother Jose: Bengie wants to play |
Jose Molina told FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal that his brother, Bengie, wants to play this season. |
However, he said that Bengie would accept a deal only that shows him "sufficient respect," which pretty much rules out a minor league contract. That's basically what we've been hearing for a while now. It's unlikely Bengie will receive any guaranteed offers at this point, but it's possible he could if injuries strike some team's catcher depth chart. |

Sun Mar 13 2011 | 08:30 | Bengie Molina retired, for now |
Bengie Molina says he's retired "for now." |
"I don't want to say I'm retired," Molina said. "I'm just out. Who knows? Maybe later on, I'll change my mind, but for now, I'm retired. I don't want to file the papers until I'm sure." Molina would probably return in the right situation and for the right amount of money, but he's simply not finding it and would rather not play than accept a non-guaranteed deal. The odds are good that that he's played his last game, but it's certainly possible some team will give him a call if injury strikes. |

Tue Mar 8 2011 | 13:27 | Padres courted Molina, no deal struck |
According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Padres courted free agent catcher Bengie Molina recently but found the veteran to be in "retirement mode." |
The Padres are looking to add some catching depth in the wake of Gregg Zaun's sudden retirement, but Molina apparently won't be an option. The 36-year-old told Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News on Monday that he won't continue his career unless he gets a guaranteed deal at a "respectable" salary. |

Mon Mar 7 2011 | 19:55 | Padres told Bengie Molina 'is retired' |
According to Dan Hayes of the North County Times, the Padres put in an inquiry on Bengie Molina but were told that "he is retired." |
This confirms an earlier report by Marty Caswell of XX1090 Sports Radio in San Diego, but word about his retirement appears more definitive now. The 36-year-old backstop batted .249/.297/.326 with five homers and 36 RBI over 416 plate appearances between the Giants and Rangers last season and was unable to find an opportunity to his liking this winter. If the news about his retirement is true, he'll finish with a .274 career batting average, 1,317 hits and 144 home runs over 13 major league seasons. |

Mon Mar 7 2011 | 19:08 | Report: Padres reach out to Bengie Molina |
The Padres have reached out to Bengie Molina, but were told that he's not inclined to play at this time, according to Marty Caswell of XX1090 Sports Radio in San Diego. |
The Padres are in search of catching help now that Gregg Zaun has retired, but it sounds like Molina is close to retirement. As of now, Rob Johnson, Kyle Phillips and Guillermo Quiroz are the best internal candidates to backup Nick Hundley. |

Tue Feb 8 2011 | 09:22 | Bengie Molina still unsure about retiring |
Free agent catcher Bengie Molina said Tuesday that he has "no idea" whether his career is going to continue this season. |
"We haven't decided yet," Molina told Newsday's Ken Davidoff. "There's a couple of [teams interested], but they're not offering what we want, for sure. I don't know right now what's going to happen." The 36-year-old could find more interest this spring if a starting or backup catcher goes down with an injury. He finished with a .249/.297/.326 batting line, five home runs and 36 RBI in 377 at-bats last season. |

Sat Feb 5 2011 | 14:47 | Report: Bengie Molina still unsure of future |
FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi reports that Bengie Molina's reps are still mum on whether or not the veteran catcher intends to play in 2011 or retire. |
The decision might be made for him, if it hasn't been already. Molina, 36, reportedly still wants starter's at-bats, but there isn't a team willing to give them to him. He will either have to accept a backup job somewhere at a modest salary or just hang up his cleats. The latter is looking likely. |

Thu Jan 6 2011 | 11:11 | Bengie Molina looking for the 'right fit' |
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Bengie Molina could be interested in backing up his brother Yadier Molina in St. Louis. |
We heard about this possibility last month, but the Cardinals were apparently turned off by his exorbitant asking price. Things may have changed for him now that there aren't many catcher jobs available. Molina, 36, batted just .249/.297/.326 with five homers and 36 RBI over 377 at-bats between the Giants and Rangers last season. |

Mon Dec 13 2010 | 14:49 | Cards move on from inking Bengie Molina |
According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have moved on from free agent catcher Bengie Molina. |
The Cards were hoping Bengie would be open to backing up his brother in St. Louis at a discount, but he wants starter-type money. Or at least something close. The Cardinals will pick off the scrap heap. |

Sun Dec 12 2010 | 09:37 | Cards want Bengie to back up Yadi |
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss, the Cardinals have "made it clear" to Bengie Molina that he's their preferred choice at backup catcher. |
Molina, 36, still hasn't decided if he's going to play another season. He's not going to get a starting job anywhere, but perhaps backup up his little brother, Yadier, in St. Louis would be a nice way to cap off his career. Molina is coming off a season where he hit just .249/.297/.326 with five homers over 377 at-bats, but he would be a fine addition in a backup role. |

Fri Dec 10 2010 | 20:49 | Bengie Molina weighing Cardinals offer? |
Yadier Molina indicated to Lester Jimenez of the Puerto Rican daily Primera Hora that the Cardinals want his brother, Bengie, and that they're just waiting on an answer from him. |
Yadier thinks his older brother could still handle a starting job, but added, "if he's thinking of retirement and wants to take it easy as a backup catcher, then I want him here with me." Bengie, 36, is mulling retirement. He's also drawn interest from the Rockies. |

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have discussed Bengie Molina as an option to back up his brother Yadier Molina. |

Wed Dec 8 2010 | 00:16 | Bengie 'on the fence' about returning |
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Bengie Molina is "on the fence" about playing in 2011. |
The 36-year-old backstop told reporters in October that he was leaning towards retirement, but Heyman writes that he could take a year off and return in 2012. We're guessing Molina would change his mind if he is offered a reasonable contract this winter. |

Sun Dec 5 2010 | 13:34 | Report: Rockies interested in Molina, Martin |
The Rockies are interested in Bengie Molina and Russell Martin, reports Troy Renck of The Denver Post. |
Renck writes that Martin is "a bit of a longshot," but thinks Molina would be a good second catcher to work alongside Chris Iannetta. Molina told reporters in October that he is leaning towards retirement, but this situation would undoubtedly interest him. The 36-year-old batted just .249/.297/.326 with five home runs and 36 RBI during the regular season in 2010. |

Tue Nov 23 2010 | 19:15 | Rangers decline arbitration offer to Molina |
The Rangers declined to offer arbitration to Bengie Molina. |
Molina told reporters last month that he is leaning towards retirement. The 36-year-old batted just .249/.297/.326 with five home runs and 36 RBI during the regular season. If he comes back, the best he'll probably be able to find is a one-year deal as a backup catcher. |

Wed Oct 27 2010 | 10:26 | Bengie Molina leaning towards retirement |
Bengie Molina told reporters Tuesday that he is leaning towards retirement after the season. |
"It's a possibility. It's more a yes than a no right now," said Molina. "I'm not saying for sure because something can happen in the winter and it can get worked out. But as for now, yes." Molina, 36, batted just .249/.297/.326 with five home runs and 36 RBI during the regular season, so the best he'll probably be able to do is find a one-year deal as a backup catcher. If he truly decides that this is the end, at least he's guaranteed a World Series. |

Mon Oct 25 2010 | 09:20 | Molina to get World Series ring either way |
Steve Henson of Yahoo! Sports notes that Bengie Molina will receive a World Series ring this season no matter what. |
Molina played his first 61 games of 2010 for San Francisco and another 57 games for the Rangers once he was traded in July. Those two teams are now in the World Series, and he will get at least some credit for making that possible on both sides. The veteran catcher has hit .333 this postseason with two home runs and seven RBI in nine games. |
