Williams started Wednesday's game, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and his first career stolen base in the loss to the Diamondbacks.

Williams got the surprise start when Buster Posey was scratched with an ankle injury. Manager Bruce Bochy said that the injury wasn't serious, and that Posey simply needed a day to rest the nagging ankle. Williams could see an extra start or two down the stretch if the Giants elect to give their star catcher a few days of extra rest as the team slowly falls out of contention.

Williams' contract was purchased by the Giants on Sunday.

Williams will join the Giants as the team's third catcher following the transfer of Andrew Susac to the 60-day disabled list. He probably won't see much time behind the dish in September, but could see a few spot starts.
