Williams started Wednesday's game, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and his first career stolen base in the loss to the Diamondbacks.
Williams got the surprise start when Buster Posey was scratched with an ankle injury. Manager Bruce Bochy said that the injury wasn't serious, and that Posey simply needed a day to rest the nagging ankle. Williams could see an extra start or two down the stretch if the Giants elect to give their star catcher a few days of extra rest as the team slowly falls out of contention.

It's hardly surprising that no team was willing to take a chance on Williams, considering his .235/.307/.361 batting line in parts of five seasons at the Triple-A level. The Angels grabbed him off waivers from the Rockies in late October but seemingly just for organizational depth.

After time with both Triple-A Colorado Springs and his major league debut with the Rockies in 2014, the Angels claimed Williams off waivers in October. He should be back in time for the 2015 season after undergoing knee surgery in September, but it appears he'll be starting out back in the minors.

Williams underwent successful surgery Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Williams, who suffered the injury Sept. 19, will miss the rest of this season as a result, but there's been nothing to suggest he may be in danger of missing the start of 2015. The 28-year-old logged 14 at-bats with the big club this year, and has hit just .235/.307/.361 in parts of five seasons at the Triple-A level.

In addition to his offensive exploits, Williams called an outstanding game behind the plate, leading starting pitcher Franklin Morales and a handful of relievers to the Rockies' second shutout of the series. Despite his excellent afternoon, Williams' at-bats could grow even scarcer over the final few weeks, after Wilin Rosario was activated from the 15-day DL over the weekend.

Williams will make his first career start Thursday against the Giants.
Williams has finally broken through after spending parts of five seasons at the Triple-A level. He'll step in Thursday to catch starter Jordan Lyles, affording Mike McKenry a much-needed rest, but his opportunities will likely be limited even with Wilin Rosario (wrist) on the DL. The 28-year-old Williams hit .256/.353/.368 with four homers and 34 RBI in 72 games with Colorado Springs this season.
