Sun Sep 4 202219:27Michael Pineda Gets Designated For Assignment
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Pineda has been designated for assignment by the organization. This shouldn't come as a surprise as the Tigers want to look at younger players during the final month of the season. Pineda has been awful with a 5.79 ERA and 1.41 WHIP on the season. Despite that, Pineda has put together strong seasons throughout his career. There could be an organization willing to give the veteran right-hander another chance. Regardless, fantasy managers should continue to avoid him because a change of scenery isn't going to make him fantasy relevant.

Fri Jul 1 202218:05Michael Pineda Activated Ahead Of Friday's Start
The Detroit Tigers have activated starting pitcher Michael Pineda (finger) from the 15-day injured list. He will be the team's starting pitcher for Friday's series opener against the Kansas City Royals. The 33-year-old missed about a month and a half after fracturing his right middle finger. He made just five starts before the injury and went 1-2 with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He could continue to maintain a solid ERA and WHIP throughout the year, but he offers little strikeout upside (just 12 strikeouts over 22.1 innings) and his win potential is low on the Tigers. To clear space for Pineda, the Tigers sent fellow right-hander Alex Faedo to Triple-A.

Tue May 17 202211:49Michael Pineda Not Expected To Need Surgery
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Pineda (finger) is not expected to need surgery to fix his fractured right middle finger, according to skipper A.J. Hinch. Pineda will be re-evaluated in a couple of weeks. The veteran right-hander will likely be out for over a month, but Hinch said the team is optimistic that Pineda won't miss multiple months. The 33-year-old was off to a great start for Detroit before the injury, posting a 3.22 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with a 12:4 K:BB in five starts covering 22 1/3 innings pitched. If you have the room, Pineda is certainly worth stashing. With Matt Manning (shoulder) and Casey Mize (elbow) also sidelined, right-handed pitching prospect Alex Faedo could remain in the starting rotation for the time being.

Sun May 15 202212:01Michael Pineda Placed On 15-Day Injured List
The Detroit Tigers placed starting pitcher Michael Pineda (finger) on the 15-day injured list on Sunday. Outfielder Victor Reyes (quadriceps) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. This move comes as no surprise. Pineda fractured his right middle finger during Saturday's start against the Baltimore Orioles after being hit by a comebacker. Pineda has been pitching well for the Tigers this year, posting a 3.22ERA and a 1.07 WHIP over five starts. It's unclear exactly how long he'll be out, but we'd expect the team to be without him for a minimum of a month or so. Alex Faedo will make another start on Monday, but the team has yet to announce who will start this coming Friday's game, which Pineda was originally slated to start.

Sat May 14 202221:21Michael Pineda Suffers Broken Finger
Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Pineda (finger) suffered a broken finger on his right hand and is expected to be placed on the injured list. He exited Saturday's start against the Baltimore Orioles early after being hit in the hand by a comebacker during the second inning. He sustained a broken right middle finger, and no word yet on surgery. The 31-year-old owned a 3.22 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 12 strikeouts over 22 2/3 innings this season. Pineda is set to face a lengthy absence.

Tue May 10 202200:31Michael Pineda Takes Tough Loss Monday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Pineda pitched well but took the loss in Monday's 2-0 game against the A's. Pineda pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits (including a solo home run) and two walks with four strikeouts. However, he was outdueled by Paul Blackburn. The veteran now has a 1-2 record with a 3.43 ERA, 12 strikeouts, and four walks over his first four starts of the season. The strikeouts haven't been there for him to this point, but Pineda has looked good otherwise and has always been at least a streaming fantasy option throughout his career. His next start will be stream-worthy against the Orioles at home.

Wed Apr 20 202216:13Michael Pineda To Make His Tigers Debut On Thursday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Pineda will make his debut for the team in Thursday's game against his former team, the New York Yankees. Pineda signed with the Tigers this offseason, but he had a delayed arrival at spring camp due to visa complications. He has spent the last few weeks in the minors working up his pitch count. The 33-year-old was a member of the Minnesota Twins over the last three seasons. Last year, he made 21 starts (22 total appearances) and went 9-8 with a 3.62 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.

Wed Apr 13 202211:47Michael Pineda Not Quite Ready
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Pineda will make another start in Triple-A on Sunday. The veteran right-hander arrived late to spring training due to a visa issue. He threw 55 pitches during his start in Toledo on Tuesday. It sounds like the Tigers want to give Pineda at least one more start before bringing him into the big league rotation. He has pitched well over the last few seasons and should be an important part of the Tigers rotation this season.

Mon Apr 11 202221:22Michael Pineda May Start Sunday
Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Pineda is slated to make a start for Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday against the Iowa Cubs. Pineda had some visa issues which prevented him from getting to spring training on time, thus setting him back in his preparations for the 2022 season. The team would like to see Pineda go at least four innings on Tuesday after he threw three scoreless innings last Thursday. If Tuesday's start goes smoothly and the weather cooperates throughout the week, Pineda could make his Detroit debut on Sunday against the Kansas City Royals. He would be a low-end streamer in mixed fantasy leagues for that outing.

Sun Apr 3 202214:31Michael Pineda Throws Two Innings On Saturday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Pineda threw two innings and over 30 pitches in a practice session on Saturday, according to Evan Woodbery of MLive. In regards to the pitching session, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch stated, "He's right on track with what a first outing in spring training would be." Pineda had visa complications, which delayed his arrival to camp. He is now slated to throw a bullpen session, then head to Triple-A to continue working his pitch count up. Woodbery speculated that Pineda will make three Toledo starts and then join the Tigers rotation in late April. This would lead to Tyler Alexander making two starts with the Tigers before Pineda makes his Tigers debut.

Wed Mar 30 202211:03Michael Pineda's Visa Issues Settled
Detroit Tigers right-hander Michael Pineda's visa has been approved, according to manager A.J. Hinch. It means that Pineda can finally join the team in camp, although spring training is set to wrap up next week. The 33-year-old will need to build himself up for the regular season and will miss at least a few starts while he catches up to the rest of the starters. With Pineda needing to get up to speed, expect Tyler Alexander to keep his rotation spot warm in the meantime. Pineda had a 3.62 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, a 19.2% strikeout rate and a 4.6% walk rate in 109 1/3 innings over 22 outings (21 starts) in his final season with the Minnesota Twins in 2021, and he's ranked as the No. 112 fantasy starter at RotoBaller.

Fri Mar 18 202222:09Michael Pineda Agrees With Tigers
Free-agent starting pitcher Michael Pineda agreed to a one-year, $5.5 million deal with the Detroit Tigers on Friday. Pineda can make another $2.5 million in incentives. The 33-year-old right-hander spent the last three seasons pitching for the Minnesota Twins, and he went 9-8 with a solid 3.62 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 88 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings over 22 appearances (21 starts) in his return from an injury the prior season. He'll help give the Tigers a bit more of a veteran presence to their starting rotation and will likely slot in fourth behind Eduardo Rodriguez, Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize in 2022. In eight years with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and Twins, Pineda has posted a 3.98 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 962 innings. He could be a nice low-cost rotation arm at the end of fantasy drafts.

Wed Mar 16 202215:05Tigers In The Mix For Michael Pineda, Zack Greinke
The Detroit Tigers were still in the mix with free-agent starting pitchers Michael Pineda and Zack Greinke as of Wednesday morning. The Tigers are looking to add a veteran starter to add their young starting rotation that consists of Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Spencer Turnbull and Tarik Skubal. Greinke, now 38 years old, finished the 2021 season with a 4.16 ERA and 1.17 WHIP while posting a weak 6.3 K/9 in 30 outings (29 starts) over 171 innings for the Houston Astros. Pineda, meanwhile, had 22 appearances (21 starts) over 109 1/3 innings for the Minnesota Twins and went 9-8 with a 3.62 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 88 strikeouts.

Thu Sep 30 202110:39Michael Pineda Wins Fifth Straight Start
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Michael Pineda earned his fifth straight win Wednesday against the Tigers. Pineda pitched 5 2/3 innings, surrendering one run on eight hits. The righty struck out five batters while issuing zero walks. Pineda had his stuff working well, as he picked up at least two whiffs on all three offerings for a total of nine swinging strikes. He has recorded a perfect 5-0 record and a 1.85 ERA in September- delivering a boost to fantasy managers in both categories. Pineda ended up being a decent, late-round value, as he pitched to a 9-8 record with a 3.62 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings.

Fri Sep 24 202109:54Michael Pineda Wins Fourth Straight Start
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Michael Pineda was victorious for the fourth straight time Thursday against the Blue Jays. Pineda pitched five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while walking one. He struck out only two batters. The veteran right-hander has been phenomenal in September, posting a 1.93 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. The key for Pineda has been keeping the ball on the ground, as evidenced by his 41.3 percent groundball rate in September. Still, the low strikeout rate should give fantasy managers pause when turning to him, though a favorable matchup against the Tigers eases those concerns a bit.

Sat Sep 18 202110:21Michael Pineda Earns Seventh Win
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Michael Pineda picked up his seventh win of the season Friday against the Blue Jays. Pineda pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits while walking a pair. The right-hander only struck out two batters but managed to generate nine whiffs, six of them on his heater. Pineda has been an up-and-down fantasy asset this season, though he is having an excellent September, pitching to a 3-0 record with a 1.32 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. He'll be tough to trust in a rematch with the Blue Jays his next time out, even with such success.

Sat Aug 14 202108:58Michael Pineda Expected To Hit The Injured List With Oblique Injury
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Michael Pineda (oblique) is expected to require a stint on the injured list, per Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. Pineda was forced to exit Friday's start after just 2 2/3 innings with left side tightness- though manager Rocco Baldelli provided an update after the contest, saying the right-hander is dealing with a strained oblique. It's unclear how long Pineda will be sidelined. Left-hander Lewis Thorpe made a start Friday for the club's Triple-A affiliate and would seem to be the prime candidate to replace Pineda in the rotation, given he's on a similar pitching schedule. Thorpe has pitched to a 3.86 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 14 innings.

Fri Aug 13 202122:01Michael Pineda Exits Game With Left Side Tightness
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Michael Pineda (side) left Friday's game with left side tightness. Pineda struggled during his outing, allowing four runs on six hits, including two homers, over 2 2/3 innings of work against the Rays- though it's unclear if the injury had anything to do with his down performance. The Twins will likely provide further information on his status following the game. As noted by beat writer Do-Hyoung Park, starter Lewis Thorpe just tossed 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, striking out five batters for the club's Triple-A affiliate. Thorpe could be a candidate to take Pineda's spot in the rotation if the latter is forced to miss time.

Sun Aug 8 202110:15Michael Pineda Records Quality Start Saturday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Michael Pineda put together a solid effort against a tough Astros lineup Saturday. Pineda pitched six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three batters with no walks issued. The righty yielded one run on an infield single, then later served up a solo homer to Yordan Alvarez, though he was able to keep a tough lineup off the scoreboard for the most part. The underlying numbers weren't particularly encouraging, as he only generated eight whiffs while Astros hitters managed a superb 93.4 MPH average exit velocity against him. Despite this, Pineda has now tallied two quality starts in his last three outings, though the tough matchups aren't going away, as he's lined up to face the Rays next.

Sun Aug 1 202118:48Michael Pineda Takes Loss Sunday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Michael Pineda was charged with his sixth loss of the season in Sunday's defeat at the hands of the Cardinals. Pineda went just four innings, surrendering three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out three and walking one. The righty navigated two scoreless frames to open the outing before running into trouble in the third and fourth innings, needing 39 pitches to get through the final two. Pineda was coming off of two solid starts, so it was slightly disappointing that he couldn't keep up the trend, though he still owns a solid 3.89 ERA on the season. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect that to remain steady, considering his career-worst marks in barrel rate, hard-hit rate, and strikeout rate.
