Tue Nov 10 202020:09Pitcher Ray Daviault, member of original Mets, dies at 86
NOTRE-DAME-DE-LA-MERCI, Quebec (AP) — Ray Daviault, a pitcher who played his only season in the major leagues as a member of the 1962 expansion New York Mets, has died. He was 86. Daviault died Friday in a pool accident at his home, son Francois said. The Quebec native lived in Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, a small municipality about 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Montreal. Daviault, a right-hander, was 1-5 with a 6.22 ERA in 36 games for the Mets, including three starts. He pitched two hitless innings in the Mets’ first home game, a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh at the Polo Grounds. The original Mets lost a lot that year under manager Casey Stengel — at 40-120, they posted the poorest record in modern history. “He would joke that he was part of the worst team that ever existed,” his son said Tuesday. Stengel was past 70 and often mixed up names, Francois recalled his father telling him. “Dad said Casey would call down to the bullpen to say get Harris warmed up. The relievers would have to figure... [More]

Mon Jun 8 202013:36Plenty of top players were drafted after the fifth round
This year’s baseball draft has been shortened to five rounds, meaning the number of players picked will be significantly smaller than usual. That could leave several potential contributors among the large group of undrafted players.Although expectations are higher for prospects taken in the first couple of rounds, players drafted much later can and do become major league standouts. Here’s an All-Star team of sorts, comprised only of players taken after the fifth round.(The career wins above replacement figures listed are from Baseball-Reference.com. Players are put at positions where they flourished as major leaguers — not necessarily the positions they played at the time they were drafted.)CATCHER: Mike Piazza, Dodgers (62nd round, 1988, 59.6 WAR)Only seven teams were still making selections by the 62nd round of the 1988 draft, when the Dodgers took Piazza. His father was a friend of manager Tommy Lasorda. Piazza went on to become one of the game’s top hitters, and he is the lowest-drafted... [More]

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Catcher Austin Barnes agreed to a $1.1 million, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who also reached an $875,000 deal with left-hander Scott Alexander on Monday.Los Angeles failed to offer a 2020 contract to Yimi García, allowing the right-hander to become a free agent.Barnes, who turns 30 on Dec. 28, hit .203 with five homers and 25 RBIs in 242 plate appearances. His 64 games behind the plate led the team as he shared time with Russell Martin and Will Smith. Barnes is a veteran of five major league seasons, all with Los Angeles. Mon Nov 18 201918:05Cherington on Pirates: scouting will drive success
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ben Cherington earned three World Series rings with the Boston Red Sox, the last as general manager of the 2013 club that raced from worst to first. The challenge that lies ahead for Cherington with the Pittsburgh Pirates will be different. The market is smaller. So are the resources Cherington can draw from. The chance to supplement the major league roster with expensive free agents — as Cherington did in Boston — likely will not exist. Yet the 45-year-old does not appear to be intimidated by the financial realities his new job presents. Two decades in the business have taught him that while budgets may vary, the tenets of successful teams do not.“Obviously the bigger the payroll, it gives you more margin for error on certain types of decisions,” Cherington said Monday, when the Pirates announced he had been hired to succeed Neal Huntington. “But if you peel back in Boston and what really drove winning, I think, in most of the best years was really good work in scouting... Mon Oct 7 201901:38No relief: Corbin goes from starting to 'pen and Nats lose
WASHINGTON (AP) — Patrick Corbin hadn't pitched in relief in a major league game since one such outing in 2017. His return to that role did not go well. Not well at all.The left-handed starter was pressed into bullpen duty as part of Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez's plan to overcome a shaky group of relievers. Corbin wound up being charged with six runs while getting just two outs in the sixth inning of a 10-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in their NL Division Series on Sunday night. The setback put Washington behind 2-1 in the best-of-five series, with Game 4 on Monday. Corbin has taken the loss in both of LA's wins, including as the starter in Game 1."Just stinks," Corbin said in a monotone voice. "Feel like I let these guys down."He was out in the home 'pen at Nationals Park from the start of the evening, occasionally pacing around the unfamiliar surroundings. When he was called upon to protect a 2-1 lead at the start of the sixth, things went OK at first.Sure, Corbin allowed... [More]

Sun Sep 29 201916:23Pirates fire manager Clint Hurdle after 2nd half collapse
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Clint Hurdle's booming voice and unrelenting optimism helped shake the Pittsburgh Pirates out of two decades of misery. His charisma gave the moribund franchise an identity, one that reconnected the franchise with a fan base worn down by years of losing.Yet over the years, as the core that led the team to three straight playoff berths from 2013-15 vanished with trades, retirement and the pursuit of financial riches elsewhere, that optimism started to fly in the face of reality. Pittsburgh fell off the pace after winning 98 games in 2015, and as players shuffled in and out, the giddiness of those three intoxicating years of contention faded. When Hurdle arrived for work on Sunday for Pittsburgh's regular season finale against Cincinnati, the Pirates were assured of their worst record since 2011, his first season on the job. By the time Trevor Williams threw the first pitch to José Peraza, Hurdle already was headed home, his nine seasons in Pittsburgh over following a stunning... [More]
