OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Robinson Cano is back in the major leagues with the Seattle Mariners after serving an 80-game drug suspension. The eight-time All-Star has a new position — first base, for the first time — and a new spot in the batting order, too."It feels great to be back, especially the way the team is playing," Cano said before the game. "I'm excited. I was waiting for this moment."Cano's first game was fairly nondescript. He went 1 for 4 with a single in the Mariners' 3-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics and played error-free in his new position.Cano arrived in Oakland late Monday, woke up early Tuesday and was at the Coliseum taking batting practice underneath the outfield stands three hours before the scheduled first pitch."It was really hard, I'm not going to lie," Cano said. "It was so hard watching the game from home knowing that (I) should be in there. My daughter was the thing that kept me positive. That was the biggest thing, being around my family."The 35-year-old ... [More]

Wed Aug 801:12King Felix falters again for Mariners against Rangers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Felix Hernandez briefly looked like the ace he used to be for the Seattle Mariners, even playfully pointing former teammate Adrian Beltre back to the dugout after striking out baseball's active career hits leader. After getting through the first two innings unscathed Tuesday night, including another entertaining on-field exchange with his friend, the struggles returned for the former AL Cy Young Award winner.Beltre grounded into a double play to end the third, but only after the Texas Rangers had scored four runs that inning to put them ahead to stay. And when Beltre homered to straightaway center in the sixth, it marked the most runs Hernandez has ever given up in his career."Yeah, I'm frustrated. What can I say? What can I say?" Hernandez said after giving up all the runs in six innings of an 11-4 loss.Hernandez (8-10) is 0-4 in his last five starts for the playoff-contending Mariners. This was the only time in that span he pitched more than five innings.Robi... [More]
Mon Aug 618:21Robinson Cano to start rehab assignment for Mariners

Cano has played second base throughout his career but will be moved around the infield when he rejoins Seattle with Dee Gordon as the primary second baseman."It's one thing hitting a guy groundballs, it's another thing seeing them live off the bat in game situations and reacting to things," Servais said. "And at first base, it's getting over to the bag, it's picking balls in the dirt, it's ... [More]
Tue Jul 3120:49Mariners make outfield upgrade getting Maybin from Marlins
SEATTLE (AP) — Jerry Dipoto thought he was done making deals a day before the non-waiver trade deadline after remodeling the Seattle Mariners bullpen. The Mariners' ever-active baseball boss just couldn't help himself when an outfield upgrade became available.Seattle acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, giving the Mariners a boost going into the final two months of the regular season. Seattle landed Maybin in exchange for minor league infielder Bryson Brigman and international bonus pool allotment.Dipoto said he first had discussions with the Marlins about Maybin about two weeks ago, but it took the non-waiver trade deadline to get a deal finalized."He fits into the theme of what we're doing and adds better balance to our club. And the experience of a guy who has been through it as long as Cam has doesn't hurt," Dipoto said.Center field was the one obvious position where Seattle could use an upgrade. Since moving Dee Gordon to second base, Guillermo He... [More]

SEATTLE (AP) — Jerry Dipoto thought he was done making deals a day before the non-waiver trade deadline after remodeling the Seattle Mariners bullpen. That was before he was able to upgrade the one obvious position where Seattle could use help.Seattle acquired outfielder Cameron Maybin from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, giving the Mariners a boost in the outfield going into the final two months of the regular season. Seattle landed Maybin in exchange for minor league infielder Bryson Brigman and international slot money.Center field was the one obvious position where Seattle could use an upgrade. Since moving Dee Gordon to second base, Guillermo Heredia has seen the majority of the time in center field. And while Heredia is outstanding defensively, his bat hasn't provided much to Seattle's lineup. Heredia is hitting .229 with a .314 on-base percentage and 22 runs scored. Heredia was batting .302 on May 29, but his average has taken a nose dive. In the past 51 games played, Heredia is ... [More]

Fri Jul 2020:15Mariners GM: Don't be surprised to see Cano at first
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said Friday that Robinson Cano will be used at a few positions when he returns from his suspension next month, including first base.Where Cano ends up defensively is one of the big questions once he's eligible to return on Aug. 14 from his 80-game suspension for violating baseball's joint drug agreement. He's been a second baseman for the entirety of his major league career, but it may not be his primary position when he comes back.Following the suspension, Seattle moved Dee Gordon from center field back to his natural position at second base."We're looking at Dee as our second baseman. There may be a time especially mid-August to the end of the season where he slides out to center field for a day, but primarily he's going to play second base," Dipoto said. "We sat down and talked with Robbie and Robbie said, 'Whatever I need to do to help this team get to the postseason.' He was great about it."Cano recently relocated to t... [More]

So I was waiting for the right time."Cano said he couldn't discuss details of the testing process but maintained the substance was prescribed to him in the Dominican Republic for the treatment of a medical issue."I've been getting tested for the last 12 seasons and I've never had an issue with MLB policy," he s...
