Avery signed a minor league contract with the Tigers on Thursday that includes an invite to spring training, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Avery has failed to live up to expectations as a second-round pick so far in his career, but he did hit .275/.344/.413 with a career-high 10 homers and 31 stolen bases in 120 games at the Triple-A level in 2014 and is just entering his age-25 season. It seems likely he will end up back at Triple-A to begin 2015, but breaking camp with the big club is not completely out of the question for Avery.

Mariners acquired OF Xavier Avery from the Orioles for 1B/OF Michael Morse.
Avery is a career .260/.328/.354 hitter in the minors that batted only .223/.305/.340 during a 32-game stint with the O's last year. He's a great athlete, but his lack of hitting skills limits him to being, at best, a fourth outfielder.

Orioles optioned OF Xavier Avery, RHP Zach Clark and LHP Mike Belfiore to Triple-A Norfolk.
Avery had a shot at earning a bench job this spring, but none of these cuts are surprising. Belfiore is a guy to keep an eye on after he experienced a bit of a breakthrough last season in the minors in his first full year as a reliever.
