DETROIT (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have signed right-handed reliever Matt Belisle, bringing back the popular veteran after a stint with Cleveland.The Twins made the move Tuesday before their game at Detroit and designated utility infielder Gregorio Petit for release or assignment to make room on the roster.Belisle had a 5.06 ERA for the Indians in eight appearances earlier this season before being assigned to Triple-A Columbus. The 38-year-old posted a 4.03 ERA for the Twins in 2017 in 62 appearances. He moved from setup man to a ninth-inning role after closer Brandon Kintzler was traded.Twins relievers rank 21st in the major leagues with a 4.15 ERA.Petit had 26 at-bats for the Twins. Sano is batting just .213 in 20 games, with four doubles, five home runs, 14 RBIs and nine walks.Manager Paul Molitor, at least, sounded optimistic about Sano avoiding a long absence. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins right-hander Ervin Santana will miss the start of the regular season after unexpected surgery on his right middle finger.The Twins announced the 35-year-old right-hander had the procedure Tuesday in New York by Dr. Charles Melone, after Santana experienced discomfort during a bullpen session last week. Santana is expected to need 10 to 12 weeks of rehabilitation before he can pitch in a major league game, which would keep him out of the rotation until at least mid-April.Santana has had trouble with the digit before and had an X-ray and MRI after the 2017 season, when doctors determined there was no injury to the tendon. He was treated with an injection at the time. The injury resurfaced last week, and Melone's recommendation was surgery. The procedure to the joint of the finger is a capsular release/debridement. 3B Gregorio Petit entered Friday's game because of an injury to Yunel Escobar and went 1-for-3 with a single. Petit is batting .264 with two home runs and 15 RBIs in 66 games.

2B Gregorio Petit ended an 0-for-14 slump Tuesday night. Petit hit a soft line drive down the right-field line for a single in the fifth inning of a 7-6 win over the Seattle Mariners. Petit finished 1-for-3 and struck out once.

LF Gregorio Petit went 2-for-2 with a walk and double Wednesday. It was the first time in his professional career that Petit played the outfield.

OF Gregorio Petit started in left field for the Angels, his first professional game in the outfield.

3B Gregorio Petit extended his hitting streak to six games Saturday night. Petit hit a single in the sixth inning and went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in a 7-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics.

2B/SS Gregorio Petit belted the first grand slam of his career and the first for the Angels this season with one out in the ninth inning against Astros LHP Tony Sipp on Monday night. Angels CF Mike Trout hit the previous grand slam for the Angels, off Twins RHP A.J. Achter on Sept. 17, 2015.

SS Gregorio Petit was in the lineup again Thursday and was 0-for-3, although he reached base by getting hit by a pitch. Manager Mike Scioscia said he would probably be used in a more of a utility role once SS Andrelton Simmons is activated from the disabled list. "He's played terrific baseball," Scioscia said. "He's fielding great. He's given us a boast with the bat and he's been really solid in the field."

SS Gregorio Petit had the second three-hit game of his major-league career on Saturday night. Petit went 3-for-3, doubled, scored a run and walked in the Angels' 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Petit had his first three-hit game in 2009 for the Oakland Athletics. Petit, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on May 13, is 6-for-11 in his past three games.

SS Gregorio Petit made another start but went 0-for-4 Sunday. Petit could get a long look as Andrelton Simmons's replacement in the starting lineup after an impressive Seattle series.

SS Gregorio Petit was the third starting shortstop the Angels have used in three games when he got the nod Saturday night. He followed Cliff Pennington (Thursday) and Brendan Ryan (Friday) as Los Angeles continues to try to replace injured starter Andrelton Simmons. Petit went 1-for-3 in the win.

Petit was outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.

Petit was hitting .167 in 20 games with the Yankees this season and despite the injuries and other problems with the middle of their infield, Petit never gained traction. In 18 games earlier this season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he hit .282.

Petit was designated for assignment Saturday, The Westchester Journal News reports.

Petit was optioned off the major league team back to the minors last week, and will now be removed off the 40-man roster in order to make room for recent call-up Nick Goody. In 20 big league games this season, Petit is slashing .167/.217/.238.

Petit was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Petit has struggled mightily this season, hitting just .167 in 20 games for the Yankees. He'll return to Triple-A, where he's found much more success, albeit over a small sample size. In 14 games (50 at-bats), Petit is hitting .340 with four RBI.
