Tue Apr 1622:49Red Sox swap catchers, cutting Swihart and calling up León
NEW YORK (AP) — The Boston Red Sox hope to recharge their pitching staff by changing the battery.Catcher Blake Swihart, once a top prospect and promising piece for Boston's future, was designated for assignment Tuesday, and veteran Sandy León was called up from Triple-A.The World Series champions are just 6-12 after dropping the opener of a two-game series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, and pitching is mostly to blame. The club's starters entered that game with a 7.18 ERA, worst in the majors. The entire staff has a 5.93 ERA, ranking 28th out of 30 major league teams. And so in comes León, a backstop beloved by Boston's pitchers for his pitch calling and defense. He'll split time with Christian Vázquez, while Swihart's time with the organization is likely done.León got his first start Tuesday, handling an improved — but still struggling — Chris Sale during an 8-0 defeat.Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said the catchers aren't at fault for the early pitching woes, but that Le... BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes assistant hitting coach Andy Barkett might have best described the reigning World Series champions' slow start."Last year was Disney World. Tue Apr 202:15LEADING OFF: Harper returns to DC, Lindor sees specialist
A look at what's happening around the majors today:BRYCE IS BACKFrom the moment Bryce Harper signed his $330 million, 13-year deal with the Phillies, this game is the one everyone has been thinking about: Tuesday night marks Harper's initial visit to Nationals Park to face his former team. What will the crowd's reaction be the first time he steps to that plate in a uniform other than Washington's? What sort of tribute will there be from the Nationals? What sort of gesture will the outfielder himself make? And how will Harper, who loves the spotlight, fare in the reunion — especially against Max Scherzer? Philadelphia enters as baseball's only undefeated team, 3-0 after pummeling the Braves at home — an effort helped by two long home runs from Harper.ANOTHER LOOKThe Indians have sent All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor for a second opinion on a left ankle injury that could be more serious than first believed.
