Mon Mar 2512:05Yasmani Grandal To Open The Year On The Injured List
Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal (foot) and outfielder Ji Hwan Bae (hip) will open the 2024 regular season on the 10-day injured list. Grandal is dealing with plantar fasciitis and has yet to resume running in spring training, so he won't be ready for Opening Day. The good news is that the 35-year-old veteran backstop hasn't been completely shut down from baseball activities, so he could be ready to make his 2024 debut when he's eligible to return next month. With Grandal sidelined, it opens the door for Henry Davis to see full-time duties as Pittsburgh's starting catcher to begin the year. When Grandal is healthy, the Bucs plan to rotate the two behind the dish in 2024. While Grandal still has some pop from the left side, he's not much of an option in single-catcher fantasy leagues.

Thu Feb 2915:56Yasmani Grandal The Starter Over Henry Davis?
When asked if catcher Yasmani Grandal was the team's starting catcher, Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton suggested that Grandal would be the starter, but that he would have his workload limited over the course of the season. "Yaz is going to catch. Yas is also 35 years old, so whoever our C2 is is going to get some time. We have to be very mindful of when he catches and how much he catches, mindful of making sure we get the second guy in there in a situation that we like all the time." Shelton said. Henry Davis, a former first-rounder, figures to be the favorite for the No. 2 job after playing exclusively right field in his MLB debut in 2023. Davis is younger and clearly has more offensive upside than the aging Grandal, but his uncertain playing time is going to hurt his fantasy value in deeper leagues as he enters his first full major-league season.

Mon Feb 1212:03Pirates, Yasmani Grandal Agree To Deal
The Pittsburgh Pirates and free-agent catcher Yasmani Grandal agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal on Sunday, according to a source. Grandal heads back to the National League for the 2024 season, where he should be expected to serve as Henry Davis' primary backup. The 35-year-old left-handed slugger slashed .226/.343/.375 with 44 home runs and 149 RBI in the last four seasons with the Chicago White Sox. The two-time All-Star is nearing the end of his career and will no longer be attractive in single-catcher leagues because his expected lack of regular playing time in one of the worst offenses in baseball. Grandal hit .234 (85-for-363) with only eight home runs and 33 RBI in 118 games in his final season in Chicago last year. Although he won't be much of a fantasy asset, he should be a good veteran presence in Pittsburgh's clubhouse.

Wed Aug 9 202300:32Yasmani Grandal Exits Early Tuesday With Left Knee Soreness
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) left Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Yankees in the sixth inning with left knee soreness, per the team's Twitter page. Grandal had gone 0-for-1 before being replaced defensively by Carlos Perez in the sixth inning. The 34-year-old veteran should be considered day-to-day. Grandal's power has declined over the past several seasons, limiting his fantasy value. He is slashing .243/.317/.366 with eight home runs and 30 RBI in 325 plate appearances.

Sat Jul 15 202318:49Yasmani Grandal Taking A Seat Saturday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is absent from Saturday's lineup for the game against Spencer Strider and the Atlanta Braves. The veteran is slashing .248/.313/.370 this season with just six homers across 75 games and has started just two of the club's last six games. Seby Zavala will appear behind the plate instead, batting ninth. The 29-year-old isn't much of a hitter and is batting .169 this year over 55 contests with six bombs. Fantasy managers should stay away from Zavala in favor of a better bat.

Mon Jun 26 202318:38Yasmani Grandal Getting A Rest Monday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is not in Monday night's starting lineup for the series opener versus the Los Angeles Angels. Grandal started each of the last two contests but also entered Friday's series opener against the Red Sox as a pinch-hitter, earning some rest in the process. It's been another disappointing season at the plate for the veteran who is hitting .262 with six homers and a .716 OPS across 63 trips to the plate. While his batting average is well above his career mark, the biggest issue is a walk rate that has plummeted to 6.6%, less than half of his healthy 14.2% career mark while his .294 xwOBA is below his .313 wOBA on the season. Seby Zavala will start behind the plate and hit ninth against Angels southpaw Reid Detmers Monday night.

Wed Jun 21 202321:21Yasmani Grandal Dealing With Knee Soreness
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) was scratched from Wednesday night's lineup against the Texas Rangers due to right-knee soreness. He is considered day-to-day. Seby Zavala drew the start behind the dish and was in the nine-hole against Rangers left-hander Martin Perez. The White Sox have a day off on Thursday, so hopefully Grandal will be available to return to the lineup on Friday in the series opener against the Boston Red Sox. The 34-year-old Cuban veteran switch-hitter is hitting a serviceable .262 (53-for-202) on the year with five long balls, 11 doubles, 18 RBI and 15 runs scored in 60 games this year. Grandal has hit .250 (12-for-48) with a homer, two doubles and three RBI in 14 games in June.

Fri Jun 16 202318:54Yasmani Grandal Sitting Out On Friday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners. This appears to be a routine rest day for the switch-hitting catcher. He's slashing .271/.330/.410 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 50 games this season. Seby Zavala will cover behind the plate and bat ninth versus right-hander Bryan Woo on Friday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly with Grandal sitting out.

Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is absent from the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. This appears to be a routine day off for the switch-hitting catcher. The 34-year-old has been banged up recently, but appears to finally be back to full health. Seby Zavala will draw the start behind the plate and bat ninth versus right-hander Griffin Canning. Fantasy managers should make sure to adjust their lineups with Grandal out.

Mon May 22 202309:46Yasmani Grandal Hitless In Return
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (hamstring) made his return to the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The switch-hitter returned after a three-game absence due to a hamstring issue. He went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in what ended up being a 5-2 win for the White Sox. Grandal managed to avoid the injured list, but the White Sox will likely continue to be cautious with his hamstring issue. Fantasy managers shouldn't be shocked if he gets more rest in the coming days. The 34-year-old is slashing .285/.354/.423 with three home runs and 11 RBI this season.

Fri May 19 202318:13Yasmani Grandal To Remain Out On Friday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (hamstring) is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals. He was pulled from Wednesday's contest after re-aggravating his hamstring issue. This sounds like something that the White Sox are going to have to continue manage going forward. Manager Pedro Grifol said Grandal is expected to miss Saturday's contest as well. There is no word of Grandal being placed on the injured list, but that possibility still remains. In the meantime, Seby Zavala will cover behind the plate and bat ninth versus right-hander Zack Greinke on Friday.

Thu May 18 202309:31Yasmani Grandal Day-To-Day With Hamstring Injury
Chicago White Sox backstop Yasmani Grandal (hamstring) is day-to-day after experiencing a hamstring problem and leaving Wednesday's contest early, according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. Manager Pedro Grifol told reporters that the veteran will likely be out of the lineup on Thursday, so fantasy managers can expect to see Seby Zavala behind the plate. After a disastrous 2022 campaign, Grandal is bouncing back in a big way, sashing .295/.368/.443 with three home runs, 13 runs, and 11 RBI across 37 games. Hopefully, he can avoid a long-term injury and return in a day or two.

Sat May 13 202316:39Yasmani Grandal Scratched On Saturday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (hamstring) has been scratched from Saturday's starting lineup against the Houston Astros. The veteran catcher was removed early during Thursday's game due to hamstring tightness. It sounds like the organization intended on Grandal playing on Saturday, but possibly he suffered a setback during warmups. Hopefully, this is the last game Grandal misses due to this hamstring issue. In the meantime, Seby Zavala will start behind the plate and bat eighth versus righty Brandon Bielak.

Fri May 12 202312:14Yasmani Grandal Expected To Be "Alright"
Chicago White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said after Thursday's game against the Kansas City Royals that he hadn't gotten a full report on catcher Yasmani Grandal's (hamstring) condition and was hesitant to give definitive word because of that. However, Grifol did say, "I think he's going to be alright." The 34-year-old veteran backstop went 2-for-2 on Thursday but was pulled early due to hamstring tightness. It sounds as though he won't need to go on the injured list, but there's still a good chance that Grandal will miss at least a game or two. Seby Zavala will likely take over behind the dish for any games that Grandal misses. In 35 games this year, Grandal has hit a solid .270 (31-for-115) with nine doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI.

Thu May 11 202316:16Yasmani Grandal Leaves With Tight Hamstring
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (hamstring) left the team's game early on Thursday against the Kansas City Royals in the fourth inning with a tight right hamstring. Grandal came out of the game after running out a single. We'll know more on the condition of the 34-year-old backstop after the game, but this is certainly an injury that could send Grandal to the injured list. Before leaving, he was 2-for-2 to raise his season average to .270. Grandal was replaced behind the dish by Seby Zavala. Entering Thursday's contest, Grandal was slashing .257/.339/.407 with eight doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored in 127 plate appearances over 34 games. If Grandal goes on the injured list, Zavala would see most of the starts behind the dish for Chicago.

Sun May 7 202313:12Yasmani Grandal Dealing With A Back Issue
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (back) is dealing with a minor back issue, per manager Pedro Grifol. Grifol described it as a "quick spasm" that occurred about a week ago. The veteran catcher has been playing through the issue, which is nice to see, but it's unclear how it's affecting his play. The White Sox did recall Pedro Perez from Triple-A Charlotte to take Eloy Jimenez's (appendectomy) spot on the roster. Seby Zavala is catching on Sunday against the Reds while Grandal is serving as the team's designated hitter. It's worth keeping an eye on Grandal's status over the coming days as he works his way through the back issue.

Wed Apr 26 202312:26Yasmani Grandal Out Against Blue Jays
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (back) is out of the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays while dealing with back spasms. It remains to be seen how much time he'll miss with the injury, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the 34-year-old veteran backstop miss at least a couple days of action. In his first 79 plate appearances of the 2023 season over 21 games played, Grandal has gone 18-for-70 (.257) with seven doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and six runs scored for his fantasy managers. With Grandal on the bench Wednesday, Seby Zavala will do the catching for the Pale Hose and will hit seventh against Blue Jays left-hander Yusei Kikuchi.

Sat Sep 10 202213:07Yasmani Grandal Back In The Lineup
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (back) has returned to the lineup on Saturday against the Oakland Athletics. The veteran backstop had missed the previous two games with back tightness but he's back out there behind the dish and batting eighth against Oakland hurler Adrian Martinez. Injuries have limited Grandal to just 81 games played this season, he's slashing .203/.309/.269 with four home runs and 23 RBI over 271 at-bats.

Wed Aug 31 202216:26Yasmani Grandal Activated From Injured List
The Chicago White Sox activated catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday and optioned catcher Carlos Perez to Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move. Grandal will immediately return to the starting lineup on Wednesday against Kansas City Royals left-hander Kris Bubic, doing the catching and hitting sixth in the batting order. The 33-year-old veteran backstop has done very little at the plate in 2022 for the Pale Hose, so he could be in danger of splitting time behind the plate with Seby Zavala the rest of the way. Grandal is slashing .203/.307/.259 with only three home runs, 21 RBI, nine stolen bases and one stolen base in his 251 at-bats.

Tue Aug 30 202218:46Yasmani Grandal Likely To Be Activated On Wednesday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) is expected to be activated from the injured list on Wednesday. The 33-year-old has been hitting the ball well during his minor league rehab assignment. Although, it's uncertain how much he'll be able to catch due to his lingering left knee issue. Eloy Jimenez has been serving as the designated hitter, so things could get interesting in Chicago. Grandal wasn't offering much at the plate before the injury, so most fantasy managers can continue to avoid him going forward.
