Wed Aug 17 202220:14Dellin Betances Announces His Retirement
Right-handed reliever Dellin Betances, the former All-Star reliever for the New York Yankees, announced his retirement from professional baseball on Wednesday. Betances was with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a minor league contract before he was released on Wednesday, leading to his decision to hang up his cleats. The 34-year-old had shoulder surgery last summer and had a rough 10.26 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, 19 strikeouts and 14 walks in just 16 2/3 innings in two minor league stops for the Dodgers this year. In his prime, Betances made four straight All-Star squads with the Yankees from 2014-17. Although he only had 36 career saves in 10 major league seasons, he was once one of the more feared late-inning, hard-throwing arms when he was at his best.

Tue Apr 5 202214:36Dellin Betances Agrees To Minor League Deal With Dodgers
Free-agent relief pitcher Dellin Betances agreed to a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, according to a source. Betances pitched just one inning for the New York Mets last year before having season-ending shoulder surgery. The 34-year-old right-hander has tossed only 13 1/3 relief innings over the last three years combined due to injuries, so there's no guarantee he'll make it back to his pre-injury form as a high-leverage bullpen arm. But the Dodgers will take a chance on Betances, who made the All-Star squad in four straight seasons with the New York Yankees from 2014-17. Betances has a 2.53 career ERA, 1.07 WHIP and an impressive 14.4 K/9 in 10 major league seasons.

Wed Jun 30 202117:51Mets reliever Betances having season-ending shoulder surgery
ATLANTA (AP) — New York Mets reliever Dellin Betances will have surgery on his right shoulder and miss the remainder of the year after pitching just once this season. Betances gave up one run in one inning against Philadelphia on April 7 and was placed on the 60-day injured list the next day with a right shoulder impingement. Mets manager Luis Rojas said Wednesday that Betances “has been playing with some shoulder pain.” Betances had a 19.24 ERA with two minor league teams in his rehabilitation assignments. “He’s always a good presence for your bullpen and from an experience standpoint pitching in New York, it’s always an asset,” Rojas said. “It’s unfortunate to hear about this.” The 33-year-old Betances was a four-time All-Star with the Yankees. He pitched only once in 2019 because of injuries, then signed a $10.5 million, one-year deal with the Mets that included a player option. Betances was 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 15 games with the Mets in 2020. He exercised his option for a $6 million deal this year, but again was beset by a significant injury. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Jun 4 202122:15Rivalry renewed: Red Sox stop slide in Bronx, beat Yanks 5-2
NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer in the first inning off Michael King, Marwin González added a two-run double and the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 5-2 Friday night in the first of the rivals’ 19 meetings this season. Former Yankee Nathan Eovaldi (7-2) won his third straight start, taking a shutout in the sixth before tiring, and the Red Sox stopped their 11-game losing streak in the Bronx with their first win at Yankee Stadium since June 2, 2019. After going their first 57 games without facing the Red Sox, the Yankees started a stretch of 14 games against Boston in their next 43. New York and Boston had not met for the first time this late in a full season since 1996, when their first game was July 1. A season-high sellout crowd of 18,040, boosted by an easing of coronavirus restrictions, booed as the Yankees grounded into a pair of double plays that raised their major league-leading total to 54. New York lost for the eighth time in 11 games. Gary Sánchez... [More]
Thu Apr 8 202114:43Mets put Betances on injured list, add Hildenberger to 'pen
NEW YORK (AP) — Mets reliever Dellin Betances was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a right shoulder impingement. The team announced the move a little less than 90 minutes before the first pitch of its home opener against Miami. New York selected right-hander Trevor Hildenberger to the major league roster and added him to a bullpen that struggled during the first three games of the season in Philadelphia. The 30-year-old Hildenberger pitched for Minnesota from 2017-19, going 9-11 with a 5.35 ERA in 132 relief outings, but hasn't appeared in the majors since. The oft-injured Betances made his season debut Wednesday in an 8-2 loss to the Phillies. The 6-foot-8, 265-pound right-hander gave up one run with a walk and a strikeout in one inning of work. He did not allow a hit, but threw only nine of 21 pitches for strikes. A four-time All-Star with the crosstown Yankees, the 33-year-old Betances has been a big disappointment since signing with the Mets as a free agent in December... [More]

Thu Dec 3 202017:18May cites Cohen for joining Mets, happy to engage fans
NEW YORK (AP) — Steven Cohen already is on track for a higher owner WAR than the Wilpons, his purchase the reason Trevor May decided to take a $15.5 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets. “Just kind of the buzz around Steve and the purchase of the team and the excitement of all the changes happening, my immediate reaction was wanting to be a part of something like that,” May said Thursday, a day after finalizing his free-agent deal. Cohen completed his $2.42 billion purchase, a record baseball price, on Nov. 6 and brought back Sandy Alderson to run the team. Alderson fired general manager Brodie Van Wagenen as Cohen spent time engaging fans on social media, soliciting ideas to turn around a team that won its only World Series titles in 1969 and 1986. A 31-year-old right-hander who spent his previous six big league seasons with Minnesota, May joins a bullpen that includes closer Edwin Díaz, Jeurys Familia, Miguel Castro, Dellin Betances, Brad Brach and Jacob Barnes. “There was... NEW YORK (AP) — Reliever Dellin Betances exercised his $6 million player option for next season with the New York Mets on Sunday, deciding against taking a $3 million buyout and becoming a free agent. A 6-foot-8 right-hander who turns 33 on March 23, Betances signed with the Mets last December for a deal that guaranteed $10.5 million: a $5.3 million million signing bonus and a $2.2 million salary plus the option for 2021. A four-time All-Star during seven seasons with the New York Yankees, Betances slumped to a 7.71 ERA in 15 relief appearances with the Mets, walking 12 and striking out 11 in 11 2/3 innings. Fri Oct 30 202021:52Lester, Kluber, Hand boost free agent total to 175
NEW YORK (AP) — Jon Lester, Corey Kluber and Brad Hand were among 15 more major leaguers who became free agents Friday when teams declined their 2021 options, many the victims of budget cuts following a regular season without fans due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Also cut loose were Milwaukee infielders Jedd Gyorko and Eric Sogard, Chicago White Sox designated hitter Edwin Encarnación and left-hander Gio González, and Philadelphia relievers David Robertson, Héctor Neris and David Phelps. AL champion Tampa Bay declined 2021 options on right-hander Charlie Morton and catcher Mike Zunino but say it remains hopeful of re-signing them. There are 175 players who became free agents following the World Series and about 15 more can go free this weekend. Among the remaining decisions are on player options by Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton, Boston designated hitter JD Martinez, Cincinnati outfielder Nick Castellanos and Mets reliever Dellin Betances.
