Mon Nov 20 202314:54Zack Britton Calls It Quits
Long-time big-league reliever Zack Britton has called it a career after 12 seasons in the majors. The left-hander enjoyed a number of excellent season between the Orioles and Yankees in his career, but injuries have severely limited him of late. He didn't pitch at all in the 2023 season and made just three outings for the Yankees in 2022. He has pitched just 28 innings since the 2020 season. Nonetheless, he hangs up his cleats after making 442 MLB appearances, working to a 3.13 ERA while racking up 154 saves in the process. He finished fourth in the American League Cy Young voting in 2016, when he worked to an eye-popping 0.54 ERA across 69 outings with a career-high 47 saves with Baltimore.

Wed Feb 15 202314:42Zack Britton Throws For Six Teams Wednesday
Free-agent relief pitcher Zack Britton reportedly threw for six teams on Wednesday according to a tweet from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Per Rosenthal's tweet, the six teams in attendance were the San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets. Britton underwent Tommy John in September of 2021 and made just three appearances in 2022, all of which came in late September. Over the last two years, Britton has made 25 combined Major League appearances for the New York Yankees. He's pitched to a 6.16 ERA, a 6.22 FIP, 17 strikeouts, and 20 walks in 19 innings during that span, logging a save in the process. For his career, the veteran has posted a 3.13 ERA, a 3.54 FIP, and 154 saves in 641-lifetime innings at the Major League level.

Wed Feb 15 202312:20Zack Britton Throwing For Interested Teams Wednesday
Free-agent relief pitcher Zack Britton (shoulder) is throwing a bullpen session on Wednesday for six interested teams. It remains to be seen which six teams will be in attendance, but it was reported several weeks ago that the Los Angeles Angels had "strong interest" in the left-hander, so it's likely they are one of the six teams. Injuries have limited the 35-year-old veteran to just 25 relief appearances in the last two years, and his season ended early last year when he developed fatigue in his left shoulder. Britton has 154 career saves in 12 MLB seasons, including a league-leading 47 with the Baltimore Orioles in 2016, so he could be a useful high-leverage setup man for a team in need of bullpen help if he can stay healthy. UPDATE: The Dodgers, Angels and Rangers are viewed as three potential landing spots for Britton, while the Mets have been linked to him as well. The Cubs and Giants were two of the teams that watched Britton throw Wednesday.

Tue Jan 31 202300:18Angels Have "Strong Interest" In Zack Britton
USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Monday that the Los Angeles Angels have "strong interest" in free-agent relief pitcher Zack Britton if his price tag were to drop. The 35-year-old lefty was one of baseball's better relief pitchers from 2014-2020 with the Orioles and Yankees. However, a number of injuries limited Britton to just 19 innings pitched between the 2021-22 seasons. The Angels have already somewhat bolstered their bullpen this offseason by signing Carlos Estevez, and health is a concern for Britton. However, given his experience as a closer and track record of solid pitching, he could have a shot to see considerable save opportunities if he were to join the Angels, which would instantly make him fantasy relevant.

Wed Jan 11 202300:16Mets Interested In Zack Britton
The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Tuesday that the New York Mets are among the teams interested in free-agent relief pitcher Zack Britton. Britton was managed by current Mets manager Buck Showalter with the Baltimore Orioles and also has a close relationship with new Mets coach Dom Chiti. Britton has been a reliable high-leverage bullpen arm throughout his career, but he pitched just two-thirds of an inning in 2022 with the Yankees, as he spent the majority of the season recovering from left elbow UCL reconstruction. As a solid left-handed arm, it makes sense that competitive teams would be interested in adding him to their bullpen, although he would likely hold little fantasy value if he did join the Mets.

Fri Dec 2 202211:42Zack Britton Should Be Full-Go For Spring Training
Free-agent left-handed reliever Zack Britton (elbow) has started his normal offseason throwing program and should be full-go in spring training. Britton recovered from Tommy John surgery in time to pitch in three games for the New York Yankees to close out the regular season, but he was shut down before the playoffs with shoulder fatigue. He is seeking a one-year deal as he approaches his 35th birthday on Dec. 22, and he figures to attract interest now that he's healthy. In his first two seasons with the Yankees, the veteran southpaw had a 1.90 ERA before his elbow issues started last season.

Fri Sep 30 202220:51Zack Britton Leaves Friday’s Game With Injury
New York Yankees reliever Zack Britton left Friday's game against the Baltimore Orioles with an apparent injury. Britton threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded and then left the mound with an athletic trainer. He walked one batter and threw nine pitches without recording an out in the outing. Look for the Yankees to update Britton's status following the game on Friday.

Mon Sep 19 202211:37Zack Britton Still Rehabbing In Minors
New York Yankees left-handed reliever Zack Britton (elbow) threw one-third of an inning on Sept. 16 for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, allowing a hit and a walk in a 16-pitch outing. He's recovering from Tommy John surgery and a procedure to have a bone chip removed from his elbow in September of last year. Manager Aaron Boone said on Sept. 13 that he's "still not sure" if Britton will return this year. It will depend on how Britton's next several outings go in the minor leagues. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw has allowed just one earned run on three hits while walking two and striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings over seven rehab outings for Single-A Tampa, Double-A Somerset and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so far.

Mon Aug 29 202211:23Zack Britton Is Fine
New York Yankees left-handed reliever Zack Britton (elbow, glute) left his second minor league rehab outing with Single-A Tampa on Saturday after throwing only 10 pitches, but he said afterward that he's not injured and that his "arm feels great." Manager Aaron Boone said the following morning that Britton is dealing with a glute issue. "He doesn't seem worried about it at all," Boone said. The next step will likely be a bullpen session in a couple of days, then an appearance in a game. The Yankees want to give Britton eight to nine minor league outings before considering activating him, and they think it's realistic to envision the southpaw as an active big-leaguer in September. The 34-year-old had Tommy John surgery and had a bone chip removed from his left elbow in September of last year, so it's unrealistic to expect much from him down the stretch.

Fri Aug 19 202215:46Zack Britton To Throw Another Live Session Saturday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton (elbow) will throw another live bullpen session on Saturday, and the next step after that is for him to go on a minor league rehab assignment. Britton is slowly progressing and has been throwing to live hitters for weeks, but he's getting closer to making his season debut in the Yankees bullpen. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw will be a nice addition for a New York relief corps that just lost closer Clay Holmes (back) to the injured list. Britton has 154 career saves and will be a nice addition when he's ready to return, but it's unlikely that he'll see many save chances to close out the 2022 season.

Tue Aug 9 202211:28Zack Britton Still A Ways Away From Returning
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton (elbow) is set to face live hitters again on Wednesday, but manager Aaron Boone cautioned that Britton is still a ways away from going on a minor league rehab assignment. The 34-year-old left-handed hurler faced hitters for the first time on Aug. 4 since undergoing surgery to fix the UCL in his left elbow last September. Barring any setbacks once he goes on a rehab assignment, there's a chance that the Yankees could have Britton in their bullpen later in the year and for a postseason run. Britton has only thrown 37 1/3 innings the last two seasons combined, but he was excellent in 2019, posting a 1.91 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, three saves and 53 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings.

Thu May 26 202218:42Zack Britton To Throw A Bullpen Tuesday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton (elbow) is with the team in Tampa and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session next Tuesday, according to manager Aaron Boone. The Yankees believe that the left-hander will be an option out of their bullpen at some point this year. The 34-year-old veteran reliever has been throwing from 120 feet after starting his throwing program in February. Britton isn't close to a rehab assignment at this point and the Yankees won't rush him, but he could be back for the Bombers at some point in August or September. He's thrown only 37 1/3 innings for the Yanks in the last two years with nine saves, a 3.86 ERA, 21 walks and 32 strikeouts.

Sun May 22 202206:09Zack Britton Throws From 120 Feet
New York Yankees pitcher Zack Britton (elbow) has been throwing from 120 feet and could soon begin pitching from a bullpen mound. He underwent left elbow surgery on September 8th and has been sidelined since. The southpaw started a flat-ground throwing program in February and is throwing from distances of 120 feet. The Yankees are optimistic that Britton could return to the big leagues this August or September. Britton racked up 11 holds while posting a 5.89 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, and a 16:14 K: BB across 18 1/3 innings in 2021. The 34-year-old mainly has fantasy values in league formats that reward solds (saves and holds) when he returns to action later this summer.

Tue Apr 12 202208:46Zack Britton Could Return In August Or September
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton (elbow) underwent surgery on his left elbow last fall. He is currently on the 60-day injured list. The left-hander began a flat-ground throwing program back in February and, according to the team, he is progressing well. The Yankees are hopeful that Britton could be back with the team in August or September if he has no setbacks in his rehabilitation. The 34-year-old veteran was held to just 18.1 innings last year due to injuries and he struggled during that brief stint, pitching to a 5.89 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. However, he was a key cog in the back of the Yankees' bullpen in both 2019 and 2020, posting sub-2.00 ERAs both seasons.

Mon Aug 23 202116:36Zack Britton Could Miss Significant Time
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton (elbow) has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive July 20. Britton is dealing with a left elbow sprain, so he could be out for longer than 10 days. In fact, Britton missed the first two and a half months of the season after having surgery on his left elbow. He has struggled when healthy this season and could very well be done for the year. The Yankees have plenty of other arms to use in high leverage spots, so the loss of Britton isn't too significant. He can go ahead and be placed on the waiver wire, assuming anyone had him rostered.

Sat Aug 14 202120:21Zack Britton Demoted From Closer Role
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton spoke to manager Aaron Boone, telling him that he felt he doesn't deserve the role of closer with Aroldis Chapman (elbow) sidelined. Britton is coming off of a blown save against the White Sox- his second of the month- where he served up a walk-off homer. The lefty didn't make his first appearance of the year until June as he was rehabbing from elbow surgery, then missed time due to a hamstring injury, but he hasn't been effective when healthy, as evidenced by his 6.32 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. Britton was once one of baseball's better closers, making it likely that he turns things around at some point, though if it happens, it will occur during lower leverage situations. Expect Jonathan Loaisiga and Chad Green to get the majority of the save chances until Chapman returns.

Fri Aug 13 202109:26Zack Britton Blows Save Thursday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton was charged with the loss and a blown save Thursday against the White Sox. Britton entered the game after the Yankees rallied to take the lead late, though he couldn't shut the door on Chicago, serving up a walk-off homer to Tim Anderson. The lefty has struggled this year, as evidenced by his unsightly 6.32 ERA and 1.66 WHIP. He had been pitching better in August heading into the contest, picking up a save and two holds, but performances like these likely make fantasy managers think twice about rostering him. Britton's track record as a heavy groundball pitcher lends hope that he can turn things around, though managers in the thick of the playoff race can't afford to wait around and see.

Wed Aug 11 202119:23Zack Britton Records First Save Of Season
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton notched his first save of the season in Wednesday's 5-2 win over Kansas City. Britton worked the ninth, inducing three groundouts after hitting the leadoff man. The lefty redeemed himself, as he had blown a save chance during Monday's wild contest. He still sports a 5.28 ERA and 1.57 WHIP but has been far more effective in August so far, perhaps starting to look more like the version of himself from his first two seasons in the Bronx. Britton isn't likely to see many more save chances with Aroldis Chapman (elbow) the closer when healthy, though he is certain to pitch in high-leverage situations down the stretch for New York, giving him value in leagues that track holds.

Fri Aug 6 202108:53Zack Britton Records Seventh Hold
New York Yankees relief pitcher Zack Britton notched his seventh hold of the season in Thursday's win over Seattle. Britton came on in the eighth inning, allowing a leadoff double before getting a strikeout. The southpaw put another runner on base after an infield single, but a timely double-play ball got him out of the inning unscathed. Britton tied a Yankee record by inducing a double play in each of his last five relief appearances. The veteran reliever has allowed too many baserunners this season, though his groundball rate, 67.6 percent, has remained as steady as ever, a recipe for future success. Britton's fantasy value seems to be on the rise, as he has compiled three holds in his last four games.

Sun Jul 25 202122:53Red Sox score 5 runs in 8th inning, rally past Yankees 5-4
BOSTON (AP) — Held hitless into the eighth inning by Domingo Germán and looking feeble, Alex Verdugo and the Boston Red Sox suddenly erupted for five runs and stormed past the New York Yankees 5-4 Sunday. Verdugo opened the eighth with a long double for Boston’s first hit. Later, Kiké Hernández slid home headfirst on Xander Bogaerts’ sacrifice fly with the go-ahead run to cap the rally. The Red Sox won for the 10th time in 13 games against the Yankees and reclaimed first place in the AL East, a game ahead of Tampa Bay. New York fell nine games behind Boston. Boston trailed 4-0 when Verdugo doubled to deep right, and Germán was lifted after the hit. Jonathan Loaisiga (7-4) relieved, and Boston broke loose with four straight hits. Hunter Renfroe had an RBI double, Christian Vázquez singled home a run and Hernández followed with an RBI double, cutting it to 4-3. Zack Britton relieved and pinch-hitter Kevin Plawecki’s groundout plated the tying run. Hernández hustled hard and beat right fielder... [More]
