Mon Feb 2618:09Matt Carpenter Scratched From Grapefruit League Lineup
St. Louis Cardinals designated hitter Matt Carpenter (wrist) was scratched from the team's Grapefruit League lineup on Monday due to a bruised left wrist after being hit by a pitch in a previous game over the weekend. Carpenter's injury doesn't sound very serious, but the Cardinals will take it easy on the 38-year-old left-hander for a day or two. Carpenter essentially became a bench coach for the San Diego Padres last year after hitting just .176/.322/.319 with five home runs, 31 RBI and 67 strikeouts in 237 plate appearances over 76 games played. It was a big disappointment after he hit 15 home runs in 2022 with the Yankees before getting hurt. It's unlikely at this point that Carpenter will have a resurgence as he returns to St. Louis.

Fri Jan 1913:19Matt Carpenter Reuniting With Cardinals
Free-agent designated hitter Matt Carpenter has agreed to a one-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday that is worth $740,000, according to a source. The Atlanta Braves will be responsible for the remainder of his $5.5 million guarantee. The 38-year-old Carpenter was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the 13th round in 2009 and spent the first 11 years of his career with the team, including being named to the All-Star team three times. It was a rough year for him with the San Diego Padres in 2023, though, slashing .176/.322/.319 with five homers and 31 RBI in 76 games as mostly a veteran bat off the bench. He was traded to the Braves earlier this winter before being released. Carpenter will probably sit the bench most of the time while occasionally serving as the team's DH against right-handed pitching.

Mon Dec 18 202314:20Braves Release Matt Carpenter
The Atlanta Braves have released designated hitter Matt Carpenter. The veteran was acquired last week in a trade with the San Diego Padres but his inclusion in the deal was attached to his $5.5 million contract for the 2024 season that the Padres wanted to get off their books while the Braves were able to take on that deal in order to acquire reliever Ray Kerr. Atlanta had been trying to flip Carpenter but was unable to do so and have ultimately decided to release him. The lefty-swinging DH platooned out of that spot in the 2023 season with the Padres but limped to a .176 average with five homers across 237 trips to the plate. Carpenter's poor season at the plate came on the heels of a resurgent .305 average and 15 home runs in just 47 games with the Yankees in 2022 but his bat regressed well below the league average a season ago.

Fri Dec 15 202321:18Matt Carpenter, Ryan Kerr Headed To Braves
Designated hitter Matt Carpenter is going from the San Diego Padres to the Atlanta Braves in a three-player swap. The Braves also acquired relief pitcher Ray Kerr. Carpenter, 38, resurrected his career in 2022 with the New York Yankees, though he couldn't replicate that success for the Padres last season. Atlanta will hope to get another productive season out of the veteran, even though it should be in a limited role. Barring an injury to a Braves everyday player, Carpenter shouldn't be rostered but in the deepest of NL-only leagues. Kerr is a 29-year-old with a 5.06 ERA and 4.61 FIP, indicating he holds no value for fantasy purposes. He'll merely be depth for the Braves.

Fri Sep 15 202318:25Matt Carpenter To Injured List, Ji-Man Choi Activated
San Diego Padres infielder Matt Carpenter (elbow) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday. The veteran slugger is expected to miss the rest of the season while dealing with elbow inflammation. In a corresponding move, first baseman Ji-Man Choi (ankle) has been activated from the injured list. Choi recently fractured his ankle, but appears ready to play after missing a few weeks. Since joining the Padres, Choi is 0-for-11 at the plate, so fantasy managers shouldn't rush to grab him off the waiver wire right now.

Sat May 13 202318:30Matt Carpenter On The Bench Against A Left-Hander
San Diego Padres designated hitter Matt Carpenter will take a seat for Saturday's matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to MLB.com. The former MVP-finalist hasn't been as productive as the club had hoped, slashing .203/.316/.392 with three home runs across 30 games. With southpaw Julio Urias on the mound, it's a scheduled day off for Carpenter, who has been platooning with Nelson Cruz. It'll be Cruz who starts at DH instead, batting fifth. The 42-year-old has bounced back thus far through 26 games, posting a .272 batting average with three long balls, and has a .283 mark with a .770 OPS off of lefties, making him a solid streaming option.

Mon Apr 24 202300:58Matt Carpenter Has Monster Game Sunday
San Diego Padres designated hitter Matt Carpenter had himself a day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, and a sacrifice fly. He finished with a run scored and five RBI. This was a much-needed breakout for Carpenter, as he had recently been relegated to an at-bat or two per game, usually coming late as a pinch-hitter. Even with the big performance, Carpenter likely won't see a ton of playing time in a stacked Padres lineup. He will fill in occasionally against righties though, and should see his fair share of pinch-hit appearances. It isn't ever a bad idea to keep an eye on Carpenter in case he gets hot, as we know from last season that his hot streaks lead to him gaining fantasy relevance.

Tue Dec 20 202214:19Padres Agree To Deal With Matt Carpenter
According to a tweet from MLB.com's AJ Cassavell on Tuesday, the San Diego Padres have reportedly agreed to a deal with free-agent infielder Matt Carpenter. The deal guarantees him $12 million, with $6 million coming in 2023 and a $6 million player option in 2024. Carpenter will play something of a utility role in San Diego -- some first base, left field, right field, designated hitter and potentially as a backup at second and third base. Carpenter enjoyed a productive stint with the New York Yankees in 2022, hitting .305 with a .412 on-base percentage and 15 home runs in 154 plate appearances before breaking his foot. He saw most of his playing time for the American League East club at designated hitter and in right field while also logging innings at first base, third base and in left field.

Tue Nov 15 202213:21Return To St. Louis In The Cards For Matt Carpenter?
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal speculates that free-agent corner infielder/designated hitter Matt Carpenter's deep and enduring connections to the St. Louis Cardinals seem to make a potential reunion feasible this offseason. Carpenter was a roommate in rookie ball with current manager Oliver Marmol, and he worked out last offseason with both Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado to retool his swing. He also had hitting sessions with former teammate and new bench coach Matt Holliday. The retirement of Albert Pujols could create an opening for Carpenter, who turns 37 later this month. Carpenter hit a strong .305/.412/.727 with a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored for the Yankees in 2022 but also missed extended time with a fractured foot.

Tue Oct 11 202211:24Matt Carpenter Makes ALDS Roster
New York Yankees infielder Matt Carpenter (foot) is on the team's roster for the American League Division Series this week against the Cleveland Guardians. Carpenter hasn't played for the Yankees since fracturing his left foot on Aug. 8, but he'll give the team a strong left-handed power bat for their first postseason series. It's unlikely that he'll be in the starting lineup for the Bronx Bombers given all the time he's missed, but it's a notable addition to their bench. Before his injury, the 36-year-old veteran was having an outstanding bounce-back campaign in New York with a .305/.412/.727 slash line, a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored in 128 at-bats.

Thu Oct 6 202218:27Yankees Expect Matt Carpenter To Be On ALDS Roster
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that he expects infielder Matt Carpenter (foot) "to be on the roster" for the American League Division Series, which starts next Tuesday, Oct. 11. It remains to be seen how much Carpenter will actually play next week, as he hasn't played for the Yankees since Aug. 8 due to a fractured foot. However, his return to an already powerful lineup will be big as the team looks to make a deep postseason run. The 36-year-old left-handed hitter was in the midst of an impressive bounce-back season in the Bronx before his injury, slashing an impressive .305/.412/.727 with a 1.138 OPS, 15 long balls, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored in 128 at-bats.

Sun Oct 2 202213:13Matt Carpenter Transferred To 60-Day Injured List
New York Yankees utilityman Matt Carpenter (foot) has been transferred to the 60-day injured list. This was a procedural move for the Yankees as they needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Carpenter, who experienced a late-career revival this season, has been out since early August with a foot fracture and will miss the remainder of the season, including the playoffs.

Fri Sep 30 202217:05Matt Carpenter Has A Chance To Play Next Week
New York Yankees infielder Matt Carpenter (foot) took batting practice on the field on Friday and is hitting in the cages. He hasn't had any issues after doing weight-bearing on his fractured foot, and he said that there is a chance he might return to play in the final series of the regular season next week against the Texas Rangers. Manager Aaron Boone said that the 36-year-old left-handed slugger could also head to Double-A Somerset next week to get live at-bats before the start of the postseason. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to play next week, but it looks like the Yankees might have Carpenter available to them when the playoffs begin. Carpenter was killing it in 128 at-bats before fracturing his foot, hitting .305/.412/.727 with a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored.

Mon Sep 19 202211:31Yankees Unsure If Matt Carpenter Will Return
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Sept. 16 that he is "not sure" if there will be enough time for designated hitter Matt Carpenter (foot) to return during the regular season. X-rays taken in early September showed healing in his fractured left foot, but not enough to allow him to remove the protective walking boot that he has been using since fouling a ball off his foot on Aug. 8. The 36-year-old didn't need surgery, but time is running out for him to return before the postseason in order to help fantasy managers. The three-time All-Star had really turned his career around in 2022 for the Yankees, slashing .305/.412/.727 with a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored in just 47 games before his injury.

Wed Sep 7 202216:15Matt Carpenter Remains In Protective Boot
New York Yankees infielder Matt Carpenter (foot) had X-rays performed recently that showed good healing, but not enough for him to shed the protective walking boot he's been using. He's expected to have more imaging done in 10 days to two weeks, according to skipper Aaron Boone. Carpenter has been out almost a month with a broken foot, and it's unlikely that he'll be able to return to help provide any additional fantasy production in 2022. The 36-year-old veteran left-handed slugger was in the middle of resurrecting his career this year with the Yankees before he got injured. In 154 plate appearances and 47 games before his injury, he was hitting .305/.412/.727 with a 1.138 OPS, 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs scored.

Wed Aug 10 202221:21Matt Carpenter Hoping To Return This Season
New York Yankees infielder Matt Carpenter (foot) says he feels good after an examination of his fractured left foot. "I'll be back this season," Carpenter said. "I feel good about it." The 36-year-old fractured his foot after fouling a ball off his left foot on Monday. According to manager Aaron Boone, Carpenter won't need surgery and his timeline was between six and eight weeks for a return. The veteran resurrected his career before sustaining a fractured foot, slashing .305/.412/.727 with 15 home runs, 37 RBI and 28 runs in 47 games in 2022. Barring any setbacks, Carpenter could return just before the postseason.

Tue Aug 9 202215:04Matt Carpenter Goes On IL, Yankees Recall Miguel Andujar
The New York Yankees placed infielder Matt Carpenter (foot) on the 10-day injured list with a left foot fracture on Tuesday and recalled infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. Andujar has logged 52 plate appearances in the majors this season and is hitting .245 with a .269 on-base percentage and three stolen bases. In 267 plate appearances with New York's Triple-A affiliate this season, he's batting .293 with a .337 on-base percentage, 12 home runs and five stolen bases. Capable of playing third base, first base and left field, the 27-year-old will provide the Yankees with some additional depth at multiple positions. Carpenter will be out for the foreseeable future and may not be able to return again during the regular season in 2022.

Tue Aug 9 202200:22Matt Carpenter Fractures Left Foot Monday
New York Yankees outfielder/designated hitter Matt Carpenter (foot) suffered a fractured left foot in Monday's game against the Mariners, per the New York Yankees on Twitter. Carpenter fouled a first-inning offering off of his foot and left the game after ultimately striking out. This is unfortunate news for both the Yankees and fantasy managers, as Carpenter had been a huge presence at the plate, slashing .305/.412/.727 with 15 home runs and 37 RBI in just 154 plate appearances. Fantasy managers should know more after the game, but they should prepare to be without him for some time.

The 36-year-old has resurrected his career with the Yankees, slashing .360/.473/.933 with 13 home runs, 31 RBI, and 22 runs scored over 30 games in 2022. New York Yankees utility man Matt Carpenter hit his 11th home run of the season Thursday, a two-run shot to pull the team within one run in the bottom of the 10th inning of a 7-6 loss. He was 1-for-3 with the homer, a walk, and two runs scored on the day. Carpenter batted fifth and played right field in this contest, with every game in the outfield helping to answer the question of whether he will manage to garner enough playing time to be a useful fantasy option. The answer is a resounding yes thus far, as Carpenter has a 1.319 OPS in 79 at-bats across his first 28 games of the season.
