Thu Feb 1523:57Drew Pomeranz Says He's A "Full-Go" At Camp
Los Angeles Angels left-handed reliever Drew Pomeranz (elbow), who is in spring training on a minor-league deal, said he's "full-go" in his effort to return to the majors for the first time since 2021. Pomeranz had elbow surgery in August of 2021 and has dealt with several setbacks since. "Pushing from bullpens to game speed is where I had real trouble," Pomeranz said. "I kept getting reinjured and reinjured. It's pretty frustrating trying to figure out what's going on I feel good right now, probably the same point I would have in any spring training coming in." Anything the Angels manage to get out of the 35-year-old veteran southpaw in 2024 would be gravy. Although he had a 1.75 ERA in 2021 before his injury, Pomeranz shouldn't be drafted in any fantasy leagues this spring.

Tue Feb 1315:28Drew Pomeranz Signs Minor-League Deal With Angels
Free-agent left-hander Drew Pomeranz (elbow) signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league spring training on Tuesday with the Los Angeles Angels. Pomeranz hasn't pitched in a big-league game since 2021 due to arm injuries, and he was forced to shut down his minor-league rehab assignment late last year due to more elbow pain. The 34-year-old southpaw reliever will be hoping to win a roster spot out of spring training this year with the Angels if he can stay on the field. In 27 relief appearances for the San Diego Padres back in 2021, Pomeranz had a strong 1.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 10 walks and 30 strikeouts. He has 11 years of major-league experience but has only recorded nine saves and should be ignored in all fantasy leagues for now.

Tue Sep 19 202321:41Drew Pomeranz Will Not Pitch This Season
San Diego Padres reliever Drew Pomeranz (elbow) will not pitch this season as he continues to deal with an elbow issue, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. The 11-year veteran hasn't appeared in a Major League game since 2021 and will head into the 2024 season as a free agent. Pomeranz was effective when healthy on the Friars, posting a 1.62 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 33.7% strikeout rate with 22 holds and four saves across 44 1/3 innings. If he can finally return from his elbow injury, the 34-year-old could be a solid contributor in hold formats next season.

Wed May 24 202321:06Drew Pomeranz Has Cleanup Surgery
San Diego Padres left-handed reliever Drew Pomeranz (elbow) had what manager Bob Melvin described as "a cleanup surgery in his elbow" on Tuesday. There is no timetable for Pomeranz's return, but Melvin said the expectation is that the rehab won't be all that long. The Padres are still hopeful that he'll be able to pitch meaningful innings down the stretch in 2023. It's good news all things considered, but the oft-injured 34-year-old southpaw is also a pretty slow healer, so there's no guarantee he'll be back this year. Pomeranz also seems to be rehabbing from something and hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2021. His absence so far this year hasn't helped a Friars bullpen that has been a weak spot to this point.

Tue Mar 21 202320:21Drew Pomeranz Unlikely To Be Ready For Opening Day
San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin said there has been a "mild setback" for relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz (elbow). He has been throwing on flat ground but likely will not appear in a Cactus League game and will not be ready for Opening Day. The 34-year-old southpaw is dealing with more pain and inflammation in his left elbow, and it remains to be seen when the oft-injured reliever will be able to make his 2023 season debut. He missed all of 2022 after having surgery on his flexor tendon. Pomeranz should have some fantasy value in holds leagues when he returns, and he's expected to serve as a late-inning setup man in front of closer Josh Hader when he's fully healthy.

Tue Feb 28 202300:32Drew Pomeranz Hopeful To Be Ready By End Of March
San Diego Padres pitcher Drew Pomeranz (elbow) is currently eight bullpen sessions into his latest rehab stint, with the team aiming to have him healthy by the end of March, per the Athletic's Dennis Lin. Pomeranz last pitched for the Padres in 2021 before suffering a torn flexor tendon in his left forearm. He had surgery to repair that and then had another surgery in 2022 to alleviate pain from scar tissue buildup. The 34-year-old is entering the final year of his four-year deal, but he could help bolster the Padres' bullpen if healthy. He could see a number of high-leverage innings, which could leave to a number of holds.

Mon Feb 13 202316:26Drew Pomeranz Likely To Be Limited In Spring Training
San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin said that relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz (elbow) will likely be limited for the start of spring training. It shouldn't come as much of a surprise after Pomeranz didn't pitch at all in 2022 after having flexor tendon surgery in 2021. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw has only thrown 44 1/3 innings in relief in the last three years, but he's been very effective when healthy, sporting a 1.62 ERA (2.75 FIP), 1.08 WHIP, four saves and 59 strikeouts in that span in 47 relief appearances. Barring a setback this spring, Pomeranz should be part of the team's Opening Day bullpen, where he'll hold a high-leverage setup role alongside Luis Garcia and Robert Suarez.

Mon Jul 25 202211:33Drew Pomeranz Could Begin Rehab Assignment This Week
San Diego Padres left-handed reliever Drew Pomeranz (elbow) could begin a minor league rehab assignment this week, although skipper Bob Melvin said it's unknown whether Pomeranz would instead throw another simulated inning. The 33-year-old is recovering from flexor tendon surgery last August and "still feels it some" when he throws, according to Melvin. Pomeranz threw 19 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday, but he still has a ways to go before he'll be able to make his 2022 season debut out of San Diego's bullpen. The veteran southpaw could be a key late-inning piece for the Padres when healthy, but he's unlikely to be a factor for saves, with only nine in his career.

Tue May 31 202211:31Drew Pomeranz Throwing Bullpens
San Diego Padres left-handed reliever Drew Pomeranz (forearm) is throwing bullpen sessions at 75 to 80%. Manager Bob Melvin is optimistic about Pomeranz's progress, but the team doesn't want to push him too fast after he had flexor tendon surgery in August of 2021. Pomeranz is hopeful that the surgery will permanently fix an injury he's dealt with for the last five years. There's no timetable for his return. Meanwhile, reliever Pierce Johnson (elbow), who landed on the injured list in late April with right elbow tendonitis, has yet to resume throwing. There is no timetable for his return, but he could resume throwing in early June.

Wed May 11 202206:01Drew Pomeranz Plays Catch Regularly, Yet To Throw Off A Mound
San Diego Padres pitcher Drew Pomeranz (elbow) has been playing catch regularly from 120 feet but has yet to throw off a mound. His 2021 season ended with flexor tendon surgery in his left arm; the southpaw is hopeful that the surgery will permanently fix an issue he says he's been dealing with for the past five seasons. San Diego will have a better timeline for a return once Pomeranz throws off a mound. The 33-year-old owned a 1.75 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and a 30:10 K: BB across 25 2/3 innings in 2021. Fantasy managers in NL-Only or deep-league formats can continue to stash Pomeranz on their rosters.

Thu Mar 17 202214:23Drew Pomeranz Doubtful For Opening Day
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz, whose 2021 season ended with flexor tendon surgery in his left arm, is playing catch regularly but hasn't gotten on a mound yet. He's doubtful for Opening Day, according to manager Bob Melvin. The Padres also placed left-hander Adrian Morejon on the 60-day injured list after he underwent Tommy John surgery last April. Morejon is in camp and is throwing regular bullpen sessions, but the Padres aren't going to rush him back. Pomeranz has been dealing with his injury for the last five seasons. The left-hander could be a late-inning option for the Friars if he can get healthy, but because of his long injury history, he's unreliable in fantasy. The Padres could add a closer type in free agency, but as of now, Pierce Johnson is the favorite for saves in SD.

Wed Aug 11 202108:04Drew Pomeranz Being Evaluated For Forearm Tightness
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz (forearm) was removed from the eighth inning of Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins. He faced three batters in the inning, retiring two and giving up a hit, before being pulled. After the game, Padres manager Jayce Tingler said that Pomeranz was being evaluated for left forearm tightness. Pomeranz missed time earlier this year with the same injury so the team will likely be very cautious with him. There's a good chance another stint on the injured list is ahead for him. Pomeranz has been great when healthy this year. Over 27 appearances, he has a 1.75 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 13 holds.

Sat Jul 17 202118:31Padres reinstate pitchers Blake Snell, Drew Pomeranz
WASHINGTON (AP) — The San Diego Padres reinstated left-handers Blake Snell and Drew Pomeranz from the injured list before Saturday night's game at Washington. Snell was scheduled to start for the Padres. He missed his last start and went on the 10-day IL with gastroenteritis, an infection and inflammation in the digestive system. He is 3-3 with a 4.99 ERA in his first season with San Diego. Pomeranz was on the 10-day IL with forearm inflammation. The reliever has a 1.59 ERA in 18 appearances. Fri Jul 9 202123:09Padres put Snell on IL, Darvish likely to miss All-Star Game
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Padres lefty Blake Snell was put on the 10-day injured list Friday with a digestive issue and fellow San Diego pitcher Yu Darvish will likely miss the All-Star Game because of back tightness. Darvish, 7-3 with a 3.09 ERA, will probably attend the All-Star Game even if he doesn’t play Tuesday night at Coors Field in Denver. Darvish departed Thursday night’s start against Washington after just three innings. That setback jeopardized his chances of pitching in the summer showcase next week. “I would say it’s pretty unlikely,” manager Jayce Tingler said. “Without getting into detail, I think he’s going to be in a good place in a couple days. But I do feel it’s going to be tough for him to be able to go, just knowing how he’s feeling with his back and hip right now.” While Tingler said “things could change,” he said he expects Darvish will not miss a start for the Padres as the second half of the season gets under way. Snell has gastroenteritis, an infection and inflammation in the digestive system. The move was retroactive to July 6. He is 3-3 with a 4.99 ERA in his first season with San Diego. The Padres also placed left-handed reliever Drew Pomeranz on the 10-day injured list with forearm inflammation, retroactive to July 7. Pomeranz has a 1.59 ERA in 18 appearances. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Tue May 4 202102:33Wainwright comes off IL, helps Cards beat Mets 6-5
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright came off the COVID-19 injured list and hung tough, St. Louis got a lights-out performance from its bullpen and the Cardinals beat New York for their fifth straight win. After the game, the Mets fired hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater. New York has struggled badly with runners in scoring position this season, a trouble spot last year as well when Davis worked remotely because of coronavirus concerns. Several accomplished hitters are off to slow starts for the Mets, including $341 million newcomer Francisco Lindor. The Cardinals were clinging to a one-run lead in the ninth with two outs and a runner on base when the lights at Busch Stadium flickered, then went out for a moment. When play resumed, reliever Alex Reyes walked Pete Alonso before retiring Dom Smith on a flyball for the final out. Nolan Arenado and Harrison Bader homered to back Wainwright’s first win of the season. Four Cardinals relievers combined for 3 1/3 hitless... [More]

Tue Apr 20 202101:39Red Sox beat Giolito, White Sox 11-4 on Patriots' Day
BOSTON (AP) — Kiké Hernández led off with a replay-aided home run and Bobby Dalbec worked a 14-pitch walk in a six-run first inning against Lucas Giolito, helping the Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 11-4 on Monday in the first Patriots’ Day game played apart from the Boston Marathon. The Marathon was moved to Oct. 11 because of Massachusetts limits on crowds during the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Patriots Day game, with a start shortly after 11 a.m., has been played by the Red Sox since 1959. It drew a limited crowd of 4,738. Giolito (1-1) was removed with two on and no outs in the second. He allowed eight runs — seven earned — and eight hits as his ERA more than doubled from 2.55 to 5.79. Nathan Eovaldi (3-1) matched his career-high with 10 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and nine hits with no walks. Wed Feb 3 202113:25Padres promote, extend Preller, Greupner through 2026 season
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have promoted general manager A.J. Preller to president of baseball operations and extended his contract through the 2026 season. The Padres also promoted Erik Greupner from president of business operations to CEO and extended his contract through 2026. The promotions were announced Tuesday. Preller was hired as GM in August 2014 and he has rebuilt the Padres into a playoff team. They ended a 13-year postseason drought in 2020, beating the St. Louis Cardinals in a wild card series before losing to the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series. Since Christmas, Preller has added starting pitchers Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove in blockbuster deals, and signed South Korean slugger Kim Ha-seong. Preller has built the Padres’ farm system into one of the best in the majors. He also traded for star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. while he was still a minor leaguer, and signed free agents Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer and Drew Pomeranz. “Erik and A.J. have earned their promotions by assembling strong business and baseball operations groups within our organization while working together toward our singular goal of winning a World Series championship,” Padres owner Peter Seidler said in a statement.

Fri Oct 9 202002:04Padres' record parade to mound doesn't stop Dodgers' sweep
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Padres paraded pitchers to the mound because they really didn’t have much choice. San Diego set a postseason record Thursday night by using 11 pitchers in a 12-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who swept the best-of-five NL Division Series. The Padres finished with a majors-leading 38 innings from the bullpen in six playoff games and had 51 total appearances from their hurlers. San Diego got just one inning from its top two starters in the postseason. Mike Clevinger skipped the wild-card series against St. Louis and left two pitches into the second inning of LA’s 5-1 win in Game 1 of the NLDS because of an elbow injury the right-hander had been trying to pitch through. Dinelson Lamet was left off the postseason roster in both rounds after the right-hander experienced biceps tightness in his final start of the regular season Sept. 25. The Padres were the first team to use nine pitchers in three straight games in the regular season or playoffs, doing it in the... [More]
