Thu May 16 201916:17Twins move on from struggling reliever Addison Reed
SEATTLE (AP) — Relief pitcher Addison Reed has been designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins following a rocky start to his rehabilitation assignment for a sprained thumb on his non-throwing hand that set him back in spring training. The 30-year-old right-hander is getting $8.5 million the second season of a $16.75 million, two-year contract. Reed went 1-6 with a 4.50 ERA in 55 appearances last season with a career-worst strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate of 7.1. Wed Mar 27 201919:30Twins set opening day roster with 5-man bench
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have placed three relievers on the 10-day injured list: right-handers Matt Magill (shoulder) and Addison Reed (thumb) and left-hander Gabriel Moya (shoulder). The moves Wednesday meant 30-year-old right-hander Ryne Harper was on the opening day roster. Harper, who was in camp as a non-roster invitee, has yet to pitch in the majors after nine seasons in the minors. With so many off days at the beginning of the schedule, the Twins will only need four starting pitchers so lefty Martin Perez will start in the bullpen. That allowed rookie manager Rocco Baldelli to begin with a five-man bench: catchers Willians Astudillo and Mitch Garver, infielders Ehire Adrianza and Tyler Austin and outfielder Jake Cave. Third baseman Miguel Sano (heel) is also on the injured list.___More AP baseball coverage: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Mon Mar 4 201919:19Dodgers ace Kershaw could miss opening day start
Clayton Kershaw might not be on the mound when the two-time NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers start the season. The lefty ace is working his way back from shoulder soreness that caused him to shut down his spring training.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said "that's fair" when asked Monday whether Kershaw might miss the opener March 28 against Arizona at Dodger Stadium."There's just way too much importance put on the opening-day roster. The No. 1 thing is for him to be ready and to feel confident physically and mentally," Roberts said, "and when that is, it is."Kershaw has made a franchise-record eight consecutive opening day starts, and was tabbed to do so again when the Dodgers arrived in Arizona. But a couple days later, the three-time Cy Young Award winner had some shoulder soreness that caused him to halt his throwing program. He's taking anti-inflammatory medication.Kershaw began throwing against last week, slowly building up the amount of work and the distance of his throws. He threw on... [More]

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Two years ago, the Minnesota Twins made Derek Falvey their chief baseball officer with the precondition that Paul Molitor remain as manager.Molitor presided over a playoff team and won the American League Manager of the Year award in 2017, but the Twins slipped backward this season. Last week, Falvey and general manager Thad Levine decided the time was right to hire their own manager.Citing pursuit of more productive development by their younger players, Falvey and Levine fired Molitor on Tuesday while offering him an opportunity to remain with the organization in an undefined position in baseball operations."This wasn't about our record this year. This is about what we think is best as we continue to grow a young team in the direction toward being a championship contender," Falvey said.Falvey and other club executives expressed confidence that Molitor would stay with the Twins beyond the 20 years he has already worked for them in various roles, including the final three... Mon Oct 1 201818:30As Mauer mulls retirement, Twins bound for big roster change
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The final afternoon of the regular season for the Minnesota Twins was filled with cheers, chills and even a few tears as a lively crowd at Target Field was treated to a meaningful and memorable game .Too bad for the Twins and their fans the playoffs weren't at stake. They had to settle for a Joe Mauer tribute , the probable end to a 15-year major league career for the smooth-swinging, six-time All-Star and one of the best athletes the state has ever produced. The first big news of what will be a busy fall and winter in Minnesota will likely be the announcement from Mauer about whether he will continue his career at age 35. The sentimental scene on Sunday as the Twins beat Chicago to finish with a season-best sixth straight win left little doubt he's done."Either way, it's a good decision, you know? I can either play, or go home and be with my girls," Mauer said before hitting a double and donning the catcher's gear one last time for a ninth-inning curtain call. The end of... [More]
