Wed Jul 3 201920:37Goodwin joins All-Star La Stella on injured list for Angels
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Los Angeles Angels second baseman Tommy La Stella is expected to miss at least two months with a broken bone in his lower right leg, and outfielder Brian Goodwin also was placed on the 10-day injured list after getting hit by a pitch on his right wrist.La Stella fouled a 97 mph fastball off his leg just below the knee and immediately went to the ground in pain in the sixth inning of Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Texas Rangers. It was the first game for the Angels since the death a day earlier of 27-year-old pitcher Tyler Skaggs.Three days after being named an All-Star for the first time as an AL reserve, La Stella instead was replaced on the roster by Tampa Bay's Brandon Lowe. La Stella was moving around on crutches in the clubhouse.Goodwin was hit by a pitch from reliever Jesse Biddle in the seventh inning, but stayed in the game. He was replaced in the eighth by pinch-hitter Shohei Ohtani. Tests revealed that there was no fracture, improving his chances of returning when eligible to come off the IL.Infielder Matt Thaiss and outfielder Jarrett Parker were called up Wednesday from Triple-A Salt Lake City, with the 24-year-old Thaiss making his major league debut as the starting third baseman against the Rangers.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Trout wrapped up an eventful spring in Arizona on Friday with his third home run, and first since signing his record new deal.Trout received a 12-year, $426.5 million contract Wednesday, and in two games since, he's 2-for-7, hitting an RBI single Thursday and the three-run homer Friday as the Los Angeles Angels hosted the Chicago White Sox. In 14 games in Arizona, he batted .293.The two-time Most Valuable Player joked that he and teammate Kole Calhoun wanted to make sure they hit at least one homer in spring training."I think the biggest thing is just getting one," Trout said. "That's the goal for me and Kole. We say we just need one. We don't want to use them all up in spring."Justin Upton walked to open the Angels' first and Calhoun singled to set up Trout's homer, a laser that landed on the left field berm at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Trout connected on a 2-1 pitch from White Sox opening day starter Carlos Rodon."I hit that ball pretty good," Trout said. "I was just... [More]
Mon Mar 4 201919:19Dodgers ace Kershaw could miss opening day start
Clayton Kershaw might not be on the mound when the two-time NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers start the season. The lefty ace is working his way back from shoulder soreness that caused him to shut down his spring training.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said "that's fair" when asked Monday whether Kershaw might miss the opener March 28 against Arizona at Dodger Stadium."There's just way too much importance put on the opening-day roster. The No. 1 thing is for him to be ready and to feel confident physically and mentally," Roberts said, "and when that is, it is."Kershaw has made a franchise-record eight consecutive opening day starts, and was tabbed to do so again when the Dodgers arrived in Arizona. But a couple days later, the three-time Cy Young Award winner had some shoulder soreness that caused him to halt his throwing program. He's taking anti-inflammatory medication.Kershaw began throwing against last week, slowly building up the amount of work and the distance of his throws. He threw on... [More]

Bryce Harper meets with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the very next day, a Brinks truck is parked right outside the team's spring training complex.Coincidence or correlation? With the first full week of exhibition games on deck, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed he joined club executives in meeting with Harper in Las Vegas on Sunday night.Roberts said it was a good session and gave the sides a chance to "get to know each other." Roberts says the Dodgers were "vetting a certain process."Harper has been connected to the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants during a second consecutive slow free-agent market for the sport. Manny Machado, the other top free agent this winter, signed a $300 million, 10-year deal with the San Diego Padres on Thursday. The 26-year-old Harper was the 2015 NL MVP and made six All-Star teams in seven big league seasons with the Washington Nationals. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols has been cleared to do extensive upper body work and also has begun low-impact lower body exercises as he recovers from surgery on his left knee and right elbow.Pujols isn't yet ready to swing a bat but continues to progress as he works with a strength coach, general manager Billy Eppler said. The first baseman and designated hitter had season-ending knee surgery in August followed by the elbow procedure in September to remove bone spurs."I know that he's getting a lot of his work in," Eppler said. "We all know the work ethic of him."Pujols, who turns 39 next month, batted .245 with 19 homers and 64 RBIs playing 117 games in his 18th season. Turner grunted and winced as he jogged away from the plate toward the dugout, his hand hanging limp at his side. He was quickly visited by a trainer and replaced by Donovan Solano."I was hoping obviously the X-rays would be negative, but there's a small non-displaced fracture," Turner said. "We'll just play it by ear, see how it goes."General manager Farhan Zaidi said the team didn't know yet how long Turner would be out, but it should be a matter of at least a few weeks. Mon Mar 19 201820:05D-backs ace Greinke won't start opener, gets time to recover
Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke will start this season in the dugout.Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Greinke won't pitch on opening day because of what's perceived to be a minor health issue.Greinke exited his latest start after one inning because of tightness in his groin. He's scheduled to pitch again in spring training Wednesday. The Diamondbacks don't want to push him to be ready for their first game March 29 at home against Colorado. Without this wrinkle, Lovullo said Greinke would've started the opener for the third straight year."Every staff has a No. 1 and he fit the bill perfectly," Lovullo said. "He won 17 games last year. He was our staff ace."Lovullo said he wasn't ready to say who would start against the Rockies. The likely candidate is Robbie Ray, who went 15-5 with a 2.89 ERA last year."There's a strategy," Lovullo said. "We don't just look at opening day. We look at opening day and then beyond, so probably five or six days beyond that day. And we want to make... [More]

But the third baseman never received the multiyear, mega-million dollar contract he and his agent Scott Boras anticipated. The Royals signed Moustakas to a one-year $6.5 million contract with a mutual option... Sun Feb 18 201818:11Giants giving former sparkplug Gregor Blanco another shot
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Something about being back with the San Francisco Giants has Gregor Blanco feeling rejuvenated. The veteran outfielder won two World Series rings with them and will forever be remembered by Giants fans for his diving catch that preserved former pitcher Matt Cain's perfect game in 2012.At 34, Blanco hopes he can still run down a ball in the outfield that same way."This is home for me. I worked really hard in the winter to show my abilities again. I worked the whole winter on my speed," Blanco said. "I feel like I'm a kid again."What's getting older is new again for the Giants, who have brought back World Series veterans Blanco, catcher Hector Sanchez, and — after a stint for part of last season — infielder Pablo Sandoval, who is at spring training with San Francisco for the first time in four years. All three players will have to compete for a major league bench spot in camp. The Giants added a third baseman in major offseason acquisition Evan Longoria, two catchers... [More]
