RHP Andre Rienzo was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans by the Marlins on Tuesday, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed LHP Wei-Yin Chen. Rienzo, 27, went 0-1 with a 5.95 ERA in 14 relief appearances for Miami last year.

Rienzo (knee) was reinstated from the DL on Thursday.

He will return to a low-leverage role in the Marlins bullpen over the rest of the season. Scott McGough was optioned as a corresponding move.

Rienzo was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a left-knee laceration.

There's no word on exactly how Rienzo suffered the laceration, but it's possible it came at some point in his last outing. The Marlins recalled a couple of pitchers Friday to add depth in the bullpen.

Rienzo was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports.

Rienzo will take the now-traded Steve Cishek's roster spot. Even though Cishek leaving frees up a spot in late relief, Rienzo should be expected to continue the long relief role that he occupied in his earlier stint with Miami.

Rienzo was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans following Friday's game against the Rockies, Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald reports.

With Mat Latos set to return from the disabled list Saturday, Brad Hand was set to join the bullpen as a long man, leaving the Marlins with no need to continue carrying Rienzo. The 26-year-old Brazilian made three relief appearances during his stint with the big club, giving up two runs on four hits and four walks over seven innings.

The Marlins placed two starting pitchers on the DL Friday, so Rienzo may only be up with Miami for a few days before a guy like Justin Nicolino gets called up to take a rotation spot.

Rienzo was traded to the Marlins in the offseason after starting 28 games with the White Sox in 2014, but will begin the 2015 campaign at Triple-A due to the Marlins' depth in the rotation. With Jose Fernandez expected to return at some point this season as well, Rienzo appears a ways down the pecking order, and an appearance in the majors would likely come from the bullpen.

Rienzo was traded to the Marlins on Thursday in exchange for Dan Jennings.

Rienzo appeared in 28 games and started 21 for the White Sox over the last two seasons, but he was no longer needed in the starting rotation, so Chicago decided to swap him for a proven reliever. Rienzo will likely open next season in either the Marlins' bullpen, or in the rotation for the team's Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans.

Rienzo appeared four times since his most recent call-up, but allowed two or more earned runs in all but one of those appearances. With Zach Putnam (shoulder) slated for a Friday activation, the White Sox needed to free up a roster spot, and the struggling reliever was deemed expendable.

Rienzo surrendered four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings on Saturday against the Twins, watching his ERA rise to 5.86. He will pitch in long relief now for Chicago, with Scott Carroll moving into the vacant rotation spot.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Monday that Andre Rienzo is still a member of the team's rotation "as of right now."

"We're still going over that. As of right now he is," Ventura said. "We'll continue to sit there and talk about it." Rienzo was tagged for four runs over 4 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Twins and holds a 10.38 ERA over his last four starts. If the White Sox do make a move, Ventura said it would be Scott Carroll taking Rienzo's spot in the rotation.

After beginning the year 4-0, the 25-year-old has lost five straight starts. Even worse, he has allowed 17 runs in 14 innings over his last three starts. Needless to say, he's not a fantasy option.

In his first start since May 6, Rienzo showed why the White Sox were so willing to skip his last turn in the rotation. The right-hander served up two homers among his six hits allowed, and he also walked four. He's now 4-4 with a 5.67 ERA in 54 innings after starting the season 4-0.

Rienzo's next turn had been slated for Wednesday, but the White Sox have decided to keep everyone else on schedule and push the righty back to Sunday. He holds a 5.25 ERA over 48 innings for the Pale Hose this season.

There was some thought Rienzo's job could be in jeopardy after allowing seven runs over 3 2/3 innings on Friday, the latest in a string of unimpressive starts. For now, though, he'll stay as a starter. Still, Rienzo is a risky proposition even in AL-only leagues.
